Yes you can, it's actually only an hour away from the village vs. 3 hours. If I can recall we chose the other route because we were travelling with a group and it was the cheaper option.

You'd have to check with him to confirm his statements. Usha Village was definitely not free for us and I've not seem them advertise that.
