To me, if you know that someone is married but you still decide to go out with them, it's on you as well. Obviously, the side chick has nothing to do with the couple's relationship, the agreement is between the couple. But you know that you're doing something wrong and shitty. When you find out you were cheated on by someone who is way younger than you and who has been at your house when you are on a business trip and has eaten your food ( I think it was a strawberry jelly, that only she liked, no one else in their home ate) I believe she has the right to express how she feels! I think it’s interesting how you (and others) don’t want to hold the “side” girl accountable for her actions. By referencing the “downgrade” the song is making the point that the singer holds a higher standard, presumably one where she would respect another woman’s home and family. I think because you are young and you have seen men behave in such a way they lie to convince a girl, young or not, to enter into an affair, then you can relate to the notion that it’s not the girls fault presumably for being fooled. You are correct there are different circumstances in general…and in this case specifically you do say you don’t know all the details and of course neither do I, but I will say that if you don’t like the reference to downgrading the “side” girl you should consider how the “side” girl has degraded the “singer’s” home and family by not showing the same courtesy you feel is lacking here. I’m not sure if I’m explaining my point :/ if you take the same sentiment that makes you uncomfortable by the mere words of the song and multiple that by 1000 perhaps that is what she (the singer) is experiencing in her life. I’ve just gone thru some of the other comments and your responses. You’ve taken a lot-eh? For what it’s worth I do think the song is mostly aimed at him but also her and even mentions the mother in law as a neighbor which let’s face it can’t be fun. I think the girlfriend went to the family home and stayed there while the wife was away…there was enough there to warrant being called out. The song basically says they deserve each other. There are circumstances where that isn’t the case. I too have seen it many times where men fool girls into cheating affairs…and I’ve seen where the girls opens their eyes and get out of the affair before the wife knows anything about it. I’ve seen where the girl tells the wife. Like you said girl code applies…that’s the standard we tend to expect from one another as women. Hopefully, and even more importantly, we learn to believe in ourselves, our instincts and our self worth…and not find ourselves in the position of any of the women in this song lol. 😅

22-year-old woman are not easily impressionable children. They have the capacity to make judgments and women who choose to accept the well-known classic excuses of married men and continue their liaison have as much responsibility to bear as the man. I don't like making excuses for women, as if we are too stupid or weak to make good decisions and accept consequences of our actions. re: the whole song and drama, it's highly predictable, he's a football star and he's a man, of course he's going to eventually be unfaithful with some pretty girl half her age. What's the shock? And as catchy and fun to dance to as the song is, it's kind of cringe to see a woman in her forties making a diss track to her ex. It makes her look weak, like the bitter rejected old woman resenting the young happy couple.

@@JezPrada I agree about young people making mistakes. But we all receive the consequences for our mistakes and we learn. I read that our brains keep developing until age 25, so for me people who are younger should not be taken advantage of by significantly older people. Was she 19 when they met? That’s pretty young. Was he her boss at that time, or did he give her a job at his company later? If he was her boss, that’s pretty messed up of him.
On the other hand, there is no way she didn’t know what she was doing, and whose house she was in and whose clothes she was wearing (allegedly) and whose food she was eating. What did she think was going to happen? Shakira has a right to be angry and to speak about it.
I was at my doctors office and the receptionist, early 20’s, was loudly bragging to her coworker about how she sleeps with married men and then their wives come in and have no idea. She got off on that. If someone’s wife comes back and makes her life hell, that’s a consequence of her behavior. She has a right to sleep with whoever she wants and make fun of whoever she wants.
