- Charles III Predecessors Charles I And Charles II Of England: "King Charles III": is the address chosen by the new British king. He could have chosen for his other three first names, Philip Arthur or George, but he chose Charles III. Which immediately raises the question: who were his predecessors Charles I and II of England ?

Charles I is my 10th great grandfather and Charles II is my 9th great grandfather. The Stuart Dynasty is one of my favorite dynasties to read about. Best wishes to King Charles III. God Save the King
Thank you for sharing !
One of my Ancestors were part of the Rye House Assassination Plot against King Charles II ..........
Ummm ........ sorry about that ..... 😬 ......... it didnt work ...so ..... we all good bro? 😁
God save the King , and greatings from Australia 👋
So why are you Not a Royal? Why did the Stuarts end? I can Look Back to my 4th great gandfather. That ist so great ... Love Family History 😄
@@kirstystar74 The Stuarts ended with the death of Henry Stuart who was the cardinal of York. He died in 1807. His brother Charles Edward (Bonnie Prince Charlie) died in 1788. I can look back to my maternal 21st great grandfather. Sort of interesting to see what is in ones family tree.
Hello Cousin !🦁
My Husband and I love doing genealogy! We come down to Charles the second Henry to do the fourth is our 12th grade grandpa and we’re ninth cousins with Queen Elizabeth II I’m also a descendent of Saxe-Coburg as my husband is too)it is all so. fascinating! My maternal grandparents are the original owners of Downton Abbey‘s house
They renovated it, etc. fascinating. It’s so interesting to find out where we all come from.

Charles l was accused of being a tyrant and Oliver Cromwell became a tyrant.
Funny how things turn out sometimes...
I think that is very true.
Thats why he didn't last that long.
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Unless you're Irish.
Cromwell was executed after his death. 😬😬😬
The Stuart dynasty is definitely one of my favourites to study. Originating in Scotland, they came to rule all of modern day UK and Ireland. King James would try to revive absolutism but was fortunate enough to survive. Thank you for this informative video. Charles II "The Merry Monarch" and his brother King James did not receive much of a formal education during their exile and their lax view toward education would be mirrored in the way they educated the future Queen Mary II and Queen Anne but this did not mean they weren't intelligent, it was quite the opposite actually. However, Charles II was real savvy when it came to personal finances and was able to secure a fantastic allowance from France. He is also important to the history of the Quakers, being the one who granted the land to William Penn who established Pennsylvania.
Thank you Vishnu for adding this information for us... as you might understand, I could've (and maybe should've) given both gentlemen their own video, but as the death of the queen and consequent proclamation of Charles III was relatively unexpected (for as far as the death of a 96 year old woman can be called unexpected), I only had a brief window of time to work with.
@@TheKingsofFrance It's a great video. I'm glad you made it because I Iearnt a significant amount of facts from it. I was really shocked when I learnt of Queen Elizabeth 's passing. I knew she was old but I didn't know she would pass away during my lifetime. I always wanted to meet her.
The Tudors and the War of the Roses are too overrated but the story of the Stuarts and English Civil War are far more interesting because of the changes that it made not only in the UK but around the world.
@@brianthesage5119 Oh that is so true but it's a shame that the Stuarts just don't get as much attention as the Tudors do in the media.
@Vishnu Kanagalingam Yeah, I hope there would be a remake of the TV series "By the Sword Divided", although this drama was created in 1980s this is the best drama about English Civil War and one of my favorite period drama so far.
Another great video! Thank you! British monarch history is my favorite.
Thank you for watching Stephano ! Glad you liked it !
KING CHARLES III will be a man of his own goals, dreams & ideals. He will do things his own way keeping the needs of his subjects in mind. He will be cautious in his budgeting of finances. He loves people of all faith. He has years of experience in royal duties. He is a knowledgeable person with a strong minded Queen Consort by his side. May God always be his guide.
Thanks for watching Betty !
Great history video I enjoyed it. 😀
Thank you so very much Michelle !
Thanks for filling us in on I and II.
Hoping to have been of service Jane !
AH! THANK YOU SO MUCH DEAR LADY, GOD BLESS YOU! THIS WAS SUPERBLY DONE, WHAT A RICH STORYTELLING! ENGLAND'S HISTORY WAS MINDBOGGLING, TERRIBLY FASCINATING, AS WELL AS SOMEWHAT APPALING, DURING MY BRIEF STUDY ON THE SUBJECT BACK IN MY COLLEGE DAYS. I HAPPENED TO CATCH IN TV ABOUT SOMETIME IN THE 80s ABOUT THE MOVIE MADE ABOUT CROMWELL. HOW ENGLAND STRUGGLED TO HAVE A GOVERNANCE UNLIKE THE "KINGSHIP RULE" THAT CARRIED ON & WAS FULL OF FAULTY & STINKY REALITY HAHAHAHAHA!! THE QUEEN WAS A GREAT LADY, IMPERFECT AS THE REST OF ORDINARY HUMAN BEINGS, BUT SHE WAS ELEVATED TO AN EXTRAORDINARY POSITION & SHE DID HER DUTY WITH GRACE, THROUGHOUT THE CHANGING TIMES. MAY GODLY WISDOM LIGHT & GUIDE WORLD LEADERS, THE WORLD OF NATIONS, ALL OF HUMANITY, & MAY THE HUMAN RACE ACHIEVE HARMONY IN DIVERSITY, PEACE & PROSPERITY.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting, I'm glad you enjoyed the video Grace !
I was really hoping you would touch upon the three Charles. I had read that there was some question due to historical implications, the new king would not take the regal name of Charles. But I do not necessarily believe it is a bad thing. Each were associated with a time of great change. Great video as always. Fascinating and informative. 👑
Thank you so much ! We can't do much more but wish Charles III all the best in years to come !
@@TheKingsofFrance I think you beautifully highlighted the reigns of the first two Charles. And, I am very hopeful for a great future with Charles III.

Wonderful historic overview 👑! Merci 🌸♥️!
Thank you once again Christine 🌻
Good content, but a bit brief. Both Charles deserved their own treatment, but appreciate your well produced and researched videos.
Ah yes, I understand your comment. But obviously, I didn't have much time to prepare for this video as to me, the Queen's death was quite unexpected (especially seeing she was still so vibrant on Tuesday). I wanted to offer the information to those interested, so I had to make a short overview of their lives...
Charles III was named after the Norwegian King Haakon, originally named Karl (Charles) before he became king. He was the grandfather of the current Norwegian king (Harald) and was very dear to Elizabeth II. Haakon was the brother of the Danish king Christian, and both Haakon, Christian, and Elizabeth share parents or grandparents. Charles III name has nothing to do with his namesakes in British history. The present British king has roots in Scotland and Denmark-Norway.
Thanks for sharing this information with us Fred !
At least 3 of Charles II's sons were from the Wiggs James Scott 1st Duke of Monmouth (son of Lucy Walter)Charles Beauclerk 1st Duke of St Albins (son of Pretty Witty Nell) and Charles Lennox 1st Duke of Richmond and Lennox (son of Louise de Kerouaile)
Good historical recap. Thanks.
Thank you for watching.
Great impromptu video on this momentous occasion.
Thank you for watching as always Bev !
For that shadowy Windsor to put himself in the rays of Good King Charles I...is an outstanding example of Stolen Valour.
Thanks for watching and commenting
Someone should come up with a list of all the British Kings named Charles.
Thanks for watching David !
Well there have been only three so it's not a long list. Charles I was executed by beheading in 1649 and his son Charles II died in 1685. And now we have Charles III. That's it.
And about the notorious Pride's purge, Ser Richard Wynn The Elder of Gwydir castle, one of King Charles I's Gentleman of the Bedchamber was one of the victims of the purge. He was expelled from Parliament.
King Charles II actually infected Louise de Kerouaile whit some sort of venereal disease and after that her health was never the same
I’m honestly shocked King Charles III used that name knowing the history. I would have thought he would have honored either his father with Phillip or become King George VII. Or even nod to literature & be King Arthur. We’ll see how his story plays out….
I must agree with you... his predecessors had a dubious history. Let's hope Charles III has more luck !
It’s the name by which he has always been known.
King Philip would be far more more dubious if you want to look at the history of English kings. Mary I (aka Bloody Mary who burned nearly 300 people alive) made her husband Philip, king. King Philip was also king of Spain and presided over the Spanish Inquisition, and later sent the Spanish Amanda against England.
I thought,so too!
@@brontewcat I was surprised he didn’t choose George VII as his regnal name, too.
But his parents probably knew what they were doing when they chose to call him Charles - and although the relationship between him and his father was noticeably fraught on occasion, Charles would certainly have taken his mother’s guidance.
Still, the earlier Charles’ set a pretty terrible example of kingship - both of them were theologically wobbly in a time when Catholicism was the 17th C equivalent to communism today.
Charles I was so insensitive to the opinion of commoners that they eventually cut his head off, while Charles II was a Trump-like philanderer who filled a London suburb (Fitzrovia) with his illegitimate offspring, involved himself in dodgy deals with Catholic France (Vlad Putin not having been born yet) and did a deathbed conversion to Popery. Not what the British expected of the head of the Church of England.
Charles III will have to spend the rest of his days on his best behaviour if the British Monarchy is to survive.
My opinion is that in this modern age of worldwide media, he thought that since the world has known him as Charles for 73 years he would avoid confusion. I think he will also be trying to make the monarchy more relatable to the average person.
King Charles III is actually named after King Haakon VII of Norway, born Carl, who was also his godfather.
Thank you for watching !
Charles I's Gentleman of the Bedchamber (and Treasurer to Henrietta Maria) Ser Richard Wynn The Older died just a couple of months after the martyred King he apparently died of a broken heart.... he simply wasted away
And Charles II's royal banker Robert Vyner who was at some point created a Baronet, was at first a goldsmith trained by his uncle. He lost his business AND his son in the Great fire. After his own death Robert Vyner The Elder was succeeded as a Royal Banker by Robert Vyner The Younger who was aparently Robert The Elder's nephew.
Can’t imagine why his parents chose that name given the track records of Charles I and II; I was hoping he would choose another Regnal name.
Thank you for watching.
Now with Chucky the 3rd let's hope there is a Oliver Cromwell the 2nd in the wings to save England!!!!
Lol poor Charles
All of Charles II's kids lived past childhood except for James Beauclerk his second son from Pretty Witty Nell James died at the age of 9
Actually Ser Richard Wynn The Older carried Charles I's robes juring his coronation
So can the later generations of King Charles II children, born out of wedlock, be traced? Who were they and who are currently related to him directly from them?
As he legitimized them I'm sure a history on them is available somewhere. I might make a video about it some day. Thank you for watching !
William, the new Prince of Wales is one of them, and I think the new Queen Consort, Camilla is another.
Richard Scott, 10th Duke of Buccleuch, is the Duke of Monmouth’s direct descendant. I don’t know much about Charles II’s other children, but I once heard that Princess Diana was descended from one of them. I am sure information can easily be found for those who held a peerage.
This is the perfect moment for the long awaited "Invasion de l'Angleterre". Monseigneur Le Comte de Paris, rally the troops!
Haha, well, somehow I don't think it'll happen...
@@TheKingsofFrance Pity.
And it was actually Robert Vyner The Elder who created Charles II's crown.
When William becomes King he will be the most Scottish of all as a direct dependent via his mother Diana to the House of Stuart and to the House of Alpin
Thanks for sharing this info
Well summarised, if a little concentrated on the negative aspects of both monarchs.
Charles I was also a loving family man, brave and his execution was shocking. A large crowd greeted the act with a deep groan. They seemed to have been very happy to welcome his son back 11 years later.
Charles II was very popular with his subjects. Yes he was wasteful with wars, but at the time this what was expected of kings. Much of the time war was quite popular. Charles reportedly got into his short sleeves and fought the great fire of London alongside his citizens.
Thank you for watching and sharing that additional information with us.
The most famous of his lovers was Nell Gwynn and for me personally the most beautiful was Louise de Kerouille but the most powerfull was aparently Barbara Palmer. She not only gave him the most kids 3 boys and 3 girls but allso she became the Duchess of Kleaveland suo jure (In her own wright). Btw Barbara`s last child Barbara (Benedicta) Fitz Roy was believed to be the daughter of John Churchil 1st Duke of Marlborough who was a lover (and allso a cousin) of Barbara Palmer. However Charles II was persuaded to recognize Barbara Fitzroy as his own daughter by Barbara Palmer herself. Barbara (Benedicta) had an illagitamete son whit James Hamilton 4th Duke of Arron. Barbara (Benedicta) was sent to a monastery in Normandy where she was known as Sister Benedicta and became the prioress. Her illagitamete son Charles Hamillton Count of Arran was raised by Barbara Palmer herself and got married to a woman named Antoinette Courtney of Archambaud. They had a son Charles Hamilton James Count of Arran who married Catherine Napier and had 2 kids Lt.Col Ser William James and a daughter Anne James.
Actually the horse Charles II was riding to enter London some of us know that it was given to Charles by Thomas Fairfax himself and this horse was a descendent of the horse Fairfax himself was riding jurring the Civil War
Charles I and II disband the parliament, i wonder if Charles III also do the same in the near future ?
I hope not !
The Stuarts were interesting but one of the most embarrassing dynasties in the history of England
Thanks for watching Hendrik !
Ol Rowley was indeed frivolous yet popular. I felt bad for his father. I actually have the Book about his life by Antonia Fraser. Great read.
Antonia Fraser's books are always very good and informative !
He should have gone with "George VII". George V and George VI - Charles' grandfather and great-grandfather) were both great kings who lead the country and the monarchy through the most turbulent times in history. Last of four of Charles' given names is George, same as George VI's. Nothing wrong with "Charles III" by itself, but opting for "George" as his regnal name would be closer to the most recent dynastic tradition.
Anyway, God bless King Charles III.
Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts with us. God save the King !
Well we haven't had a king Charles since 1685 so it's nice to mix things up a bit.
Charles I was the last king to think he had almost unlimited power, which made him a target for the Puritan majority in Parliament. Charles II was a randy king with multiple mistresses who would rather play than rule.
Thank you for watching and commenting Cyril.
Apparently not only Lord Byron collected his lovers's pubic hair. King Charles II Stuart actually managed to create a special wig made from pubic hair he got from his mistresses and he donated it to a certain gentleman's club from where it was stolen. The guy who stoled it created his own gentleman's club and he had the people who visit it kiss the wig! This story inspired George IV to create a similar wig but he died before he could collect enough hair to finish it.
Okay... That's... Well... peculiar !
@@TheKingsofFrance I agree
Do you think King Charles III’s reign will be as exciting as his predecessors? 😉

Yep. He will be poking his nose and causing all sorts of fun. In the best possible humour of course.
There was also a pretender. Bonnie Prince Charlie claimed the English throne, calling himself Charles III.
So all in all, I gather Charles not to be a really lucky name for a British monarch. time will tell...
You're quite right. You can find a video on him here : ua-cam.com/video/kGenWu1azgk/v-deo.html

What’s the connection of Charles lll with Charles I and Charles ll ?
Specify what you want to know ? Obviously they were his predecessors, but what information are you specifically looking for ?
Charles iii is descended from Elizabeth Electress of Palatinate & Queen of Bohemia, daughter of James I of England. Elizabeth daughter was Sophia of Hanover, from where The German line began. Towards Victoria. So Charles I was Elizabeth of Palatinate brother, that's the CONNECTION.
Charles lll is buried at St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.
If you’re referring to Bonnie Prince Charlie… i have a biography of him available.
@@TheKingsofFrance The closest in the primogeniture line of succession seems to be the Duke of Bavaria but I do not think that he would ever make any claim to the Stuart's throne. He would be ridiculed and obviously it would be to no effect.
Other than Ser Richard Wynn The Elder Charles I had another Gentleman of the Bedchamber named Ser William Murray of Ham House he was the Whipping boy for King Charles I when they were kids and Ser William's uncle was Charles I's tutor

Last king of England was Henry 8 about 450 years ago buddy
Charles I believed in the divine right of kings but had not the political savvy of his father James I, who believed the same things. Charles was so heavy handed in his seeking to maintain this divine right that they killed him
Charles II was a debauch.
I would have thought that given the unfortunate history of previous kings of England named Charles that the son of Queen Elizabeth II would have chosen a different name, and one less unlucky .
But he had been known as Charles for so long that maybe it was not practical

Some people including Professor John Morill from Cambridge University believe that The Wynn family of Gwydir castle in the Conwy Valley in North Wales are probably the very first family to get the hereditary title of Baronette bad thing is that it stays in the main family for only 4 generations the last baronette was Ser Richard Wynn The Younger after his death the title went to John Wynn 10th son of the first baronette Old Ser John because Ser Richard Wynn The Younger had no sons he and his wife Lady Sarah daughter to Ser Thomas Myddelton only had 1 daughter the lovely Lady Mary ho was married by her grandmother Lady Grace to Robert Bertie the later Duke of Ancaster and Kastevan Lady Grace Wynn herself was a daughter to Hugh Williams and so a niece to John Williams the Archbishop of York

I was surprised at Charles III in the light of history. But a correction Charles and Charles ii were kings of the the UK not England. his mum illustrates the difference - Queen Elizabeth of the UK; Queen Elizabeth ii of England.
Thank you very much for watching and commenting. I apologize for the inaccuracy.
No. The UK did not exist in the 17th century. Charles I and II were separately kings of Engkand Scotland and Ireland. Each country was Sovereign with their own Parliaments. England and Scotland had their own coronation ceremonies. Look up the details, the presenter of this video is completely correct.
As has been pointed out, England and Scotland were completely separate countries during the reigns of the Charleses. Scotland united with England in 1707, at which point the country was known as Great Britain. In 1801, Ireland was incorporated into the single kingdom, and only then was the United Kingdom born.
Charles the first second and turd.
Haha nice. Thanks for watching.
His predecessor, Edward IV was illegitimate, as declared by the mother. His line is Disqualified, Henry VIII down the line.
I know there's a Channel 4 documentary presented by 'Baldrick' out there which goes into detail about that. They claim that the 'genuine' king lives in Austratia if I'm not mistaken...
There is no conclusive proof that Edward IV was illegitimate. Either way it doesn't matter. The Act of Settlement (1701) clearly states that only the descendants of the Electress Sophia of Hanover may ascend the Throne. All other lines are excluded, including all the other shady Plantagenet lines of descent. And that is the end of that.
Do you even know your stuff? Edward IV was predecessor to none of the Charles mentioned in this video. Edward VI's successor was his own brother Richard, the notorious king who allegedly murdered his nephews to claim the throne for himself. He didn't meet a good end either as he was killed in the battle of bosworth by Henry vii

The 4 oldest of Charles II's kids were born when he was in exile James Scott 1st Duke of Monmouth (by Lucy Walter) Charlotte Jemima Henrietta Maria Paston Countess of Yarmouth (by Elisabeth Killgrew Boyle Viscountes Shannon) Charles FitzCharles 1st Earl of Plymouth and his sister Catherine FitzCharles (by Catherine Pegge) Catherine FitzCharles apparently outlived all her siblings dying in 1759 at the impressive age of 101
Good information.
@@bonniemagpie9960 thanks it's my pleasure
We don't have a Charles the 1st he is know as just king Charles. Charles the II and III are right.
Same with Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth II.
@@briancohenthepfjmassive.4769 , King Charles l was King for twenty four years. Way too long to say he was never King. The Scorpio King before Scorpio Charles lll who was King Edward Vll reigned just nine years.
@@bonniemagpie9960 BC didn't say we didn't have a King Charles, only he that was not termed the 1st. Its understood he was first . Didn't need to be qualified.
An amazing video as always.
Thank you so much for watching !
Since Charles II had converted to Catholicism but was buried at Westminster Abbey, I can't help but wonder if his funeral was conducted with Catholic or Protestant rites? Any knowledge about that?
I do not know, I do know his funeral was a low-key affaire due to the conversion, but I cannot say if the service was roman catholic or protestant tbh...
Good question.
I don’t think the conversion was made public, and so his funeral would have been in English. In fact there is some question as to how conscious he was, as the conversion was a death bed conversion.
I've been wondering. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
