'Hartlage Wine' is a cultivar with a very dark red color scheme, hence the wine-themed name

Learned a lot here I am in Northern IL mine is in full sun and got huge fast I need to cut it back as it is 10’x10’ now I thought it was going to be 6’x’6’ in my wildest dreams. Got it really cheap at a local nursery and it has been a surprise. The flowers have a low fragrance so I think it is this version. Thanks for letting me know because I now know what it is. I really wish I could split it and transport some it to another location in my yard, but I am going to prune it back.

That is NOT a legit example of the species, Calycanthus floridus. Carolina sweetshrub has smaller maroon flowers with more numerous (and smaller) petals. 'Hartledge Wine' is a hybrid with the Asian species, but 'Athens' is a "white" form of the true American species.
