As a Belgian, I must say that a lot of fans if not most of them don't really expect a trophy from this group of players. The fans are upset with the way Belgium play and perform, like sure the quality of the players is much lower compared to 2018 but it should be good enough to perform good against teams like Ukraine etc... They underperform on international level whist they're decent enough on club level. They play without conviction or courage, they struggle in getting the ball past the midfield. The defense has been one of the weak points for years, but man this defense has more holes than cheese. The team doesn't make attacking runs and while belgium was a team that would normally win by outscoring the opponent (since the defense has been bad for a few years now) it has become impossible for them to play half decent. The fans aren't mad because they compare this generation to the golden generation, they're mad because they underperform heavily and a lot of players don't even seem to care.
HITC said it best tho: yes, they have had an INCREDIBLE starting 11 during their Golden Generation, but so did MANY other competitors, AND they, contrary to the Belgian squad, had soooo much talent on their bench as well. Belgium has never had a very deep bench and always struggled to find REAL, SOLID fullbacks. So all in all one really can't objectively say that Belgian Golden Generation underperformed. Would they have deserved to win silverware? Probably. But time and time again they lost to the eventual winners or runners-up, be it in 2018 against France (winners), or 2020(1) against Italy (winners) or early, in 2014 (Argentina, runners up), etc.
Also, a strong league shapes the identity of NT. If you see when team won the WC, their leagues were either at the peak, beginning or tail end of a generational era. Belgium's league doesn't have an identity and is used to farm players of other nationality, unlike French or even Dutch.
yeah, it's after Qatar and the group stage exit that they truly started to underperform. Before, they did as expected, tournament football is about luck too, and the 3rd place finish even exceeded expectations, probably.
mentally, in 2018, the full squad did their best, but their belief ended there. of course people aging and moving on did not help. and man do I miss Hazard.

De Bruyne is frustrated about of too many matches within a season. He's absolutely right , but there are more things .. since the Euro's , Belgium isn't playing good football and they have continued like this now in the Nations League. With the retirement of Vertonghen, the Belgian Defence is really young (Faes 26, Theate 24, Debast 20 and De Winter 22). Idk if Witsel will play again for Belgium, but he have the experience. Also the rest of the squad is still young with Onana 23, Doku 22 , Bakayoko 21, CDK 23 , etc .. they aren't yet worldclass like KDB and King Kev must accept that . Lukaku and Trossard will be back for the next Games , but Tedesco must prove that he is the right one. Because his tactics looks sometimes really bad organised.. I hope he will improve it for the next games , otherwise the problems will be even more bigger with our Nationalteam .. we aren't a top 10 nation with this style of playing football 🤷
@@lexkanyima2195 yeah, it's a transitional period. Dunno if Tedesco is the guy, but it's the case of the team not being good anymore, rather than manager being truly to blame. Lots of new players to bed in, and many of them aren't really that good yet

I watched a great video on HITC Sevens about what went wrong for Belgium's supposed Golden Generation. They achieved a lot of success compared to the historical standard of Belgium. And it's not as if a lot of countries didn't have great players during that same time. Winning a major tournament is extremely hard, and excellent teams repeatedly fail to do it.
Belgian here, KDB has every right to refuse future plays for the national team. He´s the Belgian Goat and made us incredibly proud. Our golden age has passed.
I'm defending De Bruyne. One man can't carry the whole team, it's impossible. I've seen Belgium how play, but they aren't trying to play for survival. Their motivation to win games is TOTALLY non existent. If things stay as they are ( which might) ,De Bruyne WILL retire and the current state is going to continue sinking

Belgium went from nobodies on the international stage to powerhouses at the beginning of the 2010s, with a Golden Generation which starred the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Vincent Kompany, Romelu Lukaku, and Thibaut Courtois. Despite leading the FIFA World Rankings for longer than any other team over the last ten years, Belgium's inability to win anything, or even reach a major final, has seen them derided as failures.
Fifa rankings having them #1 at any point was fundamentally incorrect. Belgium has never won Jack shit, no winners DNA, why on Earth would you ever favor them over real footballing nations like Germany, France or Argentina. They were always overrated.

"for god knows what reason". We lost like 3 out of 60 games is the reason. Consistent as fuck, also consistent in a sense that we couldn't beat the really big teams, although we did beat Brazil in Russia. De Bruyne has no issues with the lack of talent, he does have an issue with the lack of character. In all honesty, we got kicked in Brazil quarters by Argentina with prime messi and Aguero, we got beat in the semi's in Russia to the eventual word champion. We only really screwed up in the euro's vs Wales where we should have taken the tournament.
You got kicked by a lucky goal and Argentina defence you cant break, defence successfully stopped you. In 18 another defence of France, unlucky. Post Hazard its over
In the realm of the pitch, where the legends reside, KDB shines bright, with his skill as our guide. A decade of magic at Manchester's helm, With assists like a wizard, he’s taken the realm. The king of the Premier League, a sight to behold, Transforming the game with a talent so bold. In every tight moment, he finds the right lane, A passer with purpose, he’s breaking the chain. Yet whispers arise about his national call, As Belgium seeks glory, they stumble and fall. Critics may ponder, "Where’s the spark in their play?" In the shadows of talent, they search for the way. But KDB stands tall, with hopes on his back, A leader, a dreamer, he’ll never lose track. For though the team falters, he’ll rise to the fight, With vision and passion, he’ll bring them to light. So here’s to the maestro, both brilliant and true, In the heart of the struggle, we trust him anew. While history remembers his legendary swing, We celebrate KDB, our footballing king.
Belgium should’ve won the 2018 World Cup, no idea how France won (besides of course major time wasting, especially Mbappe). But after that Hazards form dropped too much and Lukaku missing sitters was becoming too often. Not mention alderwield and vertonghen and kompany were aging. Along with witsel and naingolan (I tried my best spelling these names) already past their primes, it was done after 2018. But damn did that 2018 team give me so much hope for them to win. Any other day Belgium wins that match, and definitely beat Croatia in the final. But it was not their day :(
The golden generation mostly failed because top players were never performing at their top at the same time. We got that third place because back then, all players were fit, playing at the top level and had their place in the team. When Hazard was playing top level at Chelsea, he had difficulties bringing the same qualities to the national team. Imho Debruyne and Courtois were always top notch. Our defence got weaker and weaker though with the departure of key players like Kompany. At some point, we had 4 defenders for 4 spots... We did not have a replacement for Lukaku or KDB if injured or not fit. And Lukaku wasn't fit at Qatar. KDB got injured. Tielemans wasn't great at that time either. If you look at players like Openda, it is obvious that playing for the national team is different than playing at clubs. We should have enough quality. The question is when that quality is going to perform at a top level for Belgium. Players like Lavia should eventually become fit and join Belgium. There are quite a lot of others.
KDB also cheated on her as well so DONT act like KDB was any saint. Courtois backed himself as well, not the one who always comes out crying in any big match... Who said KDB
I’m not a big fan of courtois but the reason he has issues with this coach was because he lied and said courtois didn’t want to play if he wasn’t captain for the game which as far as I know was all a lie. That’s why courtois doesn’t want to play under that coach.
Hazard declining killed this national team Once he started to get injured a lot and sit on madrid's bench Belgium was never the same, it was basically all in the hands of de bruyne to carry and he couldnt do it by himself without hazard on his side So i do feel bad for him
It does seem like money speaks. Players keep signing multiyear contracts for millions… player wages are crazy nowadays and yet they complain when they have to play more to bring in more money
Belgium's problem is that they think they can do without kdb's cooking. Look at chelsea. They just let palmer cook. They're always keen to get him on the ball. Belgium almost look like they don't want to give him the ball.
De bruyne is a baby. Simple as that. If something doesnt go his way easy, he throws a tantrum, this is nothing new. Hes always been the exact opposite of a leader, he will blame any and everything around him but himself and his own shortcomings. Theres a reason even his own man city teammates dont let him talk😂🤡
Also I hope Courtois never plays for Belgium again. He's a bad apple. Always has been (I'm half Spanish-half Belgian so I support both nations. Barca and FC Bruges on club level)
is the problem not the clubs that have 25 players and let almost always play the same 11. forced rotation, player cant play more than certain number of matches in 2 months, set so that a player will have to miss at least one match in that time.
11:45 "Perhaps it's time to close the book [on playing for Belgium]. That's my opinion at least." It's a good opinion and you make a very solid case. It actually makes me think that, for KDB's sake, it might be better if he did indeed quit. But he announced a while ago (after Euros) that he would keep playing for Belgium until after WC 2026, so I don't see him going back on his word so easily. If you add all of it together, however, it's a huge mess and KDB should just bail on this excuse of a National team. I think everyone would understand if he did that, considering the circumstances, his age, the added matches, etc. Thanks for another great video, Adrian! 👍👏🙏🙏
As much as i admire KDBs playing ability as a Man United fan his leadership of Belgium has been dreadful. Constantly slating others in the team and damaging morale....theyre not at his level ability wise but thats more the reason he should provide inspiration and encouragement off the pitch. Never heard Messi cutting his teammates in half have we.
There should be 11 winners on the pitch. Whoever isn't there to give it their all, honestly, is a weak point in your team. This was a game against France, a team with star players. You should want to beat them. I get a lack of enthusiasm against Qatar or Israel, but against France???
That and Tesco shouldn't have been resigned BEFORE Euros, when he hadn't accomplished/shown anything in any tournament. Just awful from the KBVB (National org of Belgian football, if I'm not mistaken).
I think it is mostly a tactical problem. Who plays two dms against Ukraine?? I understand that we are not what we were, but I think the level of the midfield and the attack is still UCL level. Furthermore, I think de Bruyne's critique was not necessarily aimed at the defence, that has in my opinion diminished in quality. So I think Tedesco should get more out of this squad.
Really sad for KDB. But sad thing for international players. There is only chance to win 2 trophies in 4 yrs, so probability of any great team winning it is low already. Also, sad how Belgium ended, hazard dropping off, coutiuria having a fight, KDB frustrated...
What kind of player is quitting, when the team is inevitably changing to a lesser generation? Sorry but this feels so Belgian I'm ashamed to admit it. He's the greatest player we ever had, but when it's not going his way he hates everything, and that's a real shame, he's not a leader, and he never wanted to be one. He's right about too many matches, and kudos to him to keep mentioning it, maybe one day someone at UEFA and FIFA will listen to the players. Also we need to get rid of this Tedesco guy, he feels worthless on every front.
Belgium 2018team wasnt better than the France team, their defence was not that good, and France had players like mbappe,Pogba, griezman, varane, kante etc,,,they were slightly better in all honestly

But nobody can predict how far they could go.
Hazard was the guy
Hazard retired way too early
@Myusernamecanbeseenhere Yep. He never got injured, and then he was. I feel he was never the same afterwards. And he lost the love for it. He likes burgers!
Good football journalism 🔥
Great video as always Adrian!
The Euros were a huge disappointment and they should've never resigned Tesco before it. 😔😭
@dvdv8197 but it was a risk.
But looking back it was a a transition period.
@@lexkanyima2195 yeah, it's a transitional period. Dunno if Tedesco is the guy, but it's the case of the team not being good anymore, rather than manager being truly to blame. Lots of new players to bed in, and many of them aren't really that good yet

He had his hands full, as you can see in the footage. 😅 If not for that fact, I do think he would've had his hand before his mouth in that instance. It was just (un) fortunate timing, depending how you look at it. 😄
He doesn’t like to lose. 😢
I Remember watching him in the 2014 world cup, man i was thinking how did Chelsea let him go
I mean if your fans are booing and swearing at you why on earth should you go over to them?
Great video 🇵🇪
Hazard retires, Belgium falls apart. Any coincidence?
Belgian here, KDB has every right to refuse future plays for the national team. He´s the Belgian Goat and made us incredibly proud. Our golden age has passed.
I understand how he feels, it's like gaming and you're carrying your friends and they do literally NOTHING AT ALL to win.
Hazard did, why KDB can't? Oh I totally forgot that shitting his pants on important moments is on his DNA

That's why he's match made by heaven for city under pep
Belgium went from nobodies on the international stage to powerhouses at the beginning of the 2010s, with a Golden Generation which starred the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Vincent Kompany, Romelu Lukaku, and Thibaut Courtois.
Despite leading the FIFA World Rankings for longer than any other team over the last ten years, Belgium's inability to win anything, or even reach a major final, has seen them derided as failures.
Which they are, and I blame belgian football organisation for hiring the wrong coaches.
Fifa rankings having them #1 at any point was fundamentally incorrect. Belgium has never won Jack shit, no winners DNA, why on Earth would you ever favor them over real footballing nations like Germany, France or Argentina. They were always overrated.
People seem to forget where Belgium came from. Nobody's who couldn't even qualify for a major tournament
@@salamandresscause Belgium generally win all of their qualifying games which is where FIFA gets most of their points for the rankings. France generally have 1/2 inexplicably bad game and Argentina play in CONCAF where they did struggled until the 2020 Copa America
@@andredeketeleastutecomplex People like you are the problem. They aren't. They weren't expected to win anything because they never did so before. They gave it a good go once, and that's that. You can call them failures in recent years, but not at that time. And they were way worse before too
"for god knows what reason".
😅😅😅aà
You got kicked by a lucky goal and Argentina defence you cant break, defence successfully stopped you. In 18 another defence of France, unlucky. Post Hazard its over
Kevin De Bruyne is important,,,his an asset to Belgium 🇧🇪 and without him Belgium will not qualify
In the realm of the pitch, where the legends reside,
KDB shines bright, with his skill as our guide.
A decade of magic at Manchester's helm,
With assists like a wizard, he’s taken the realm.
The king of the Premier League, a sight to behold,
Transforming the game with a talent so bold.
In every tight moment, he finds the right lane,
A passer with purpose, he’s breaking the chain.
Yet whispers arise about his national call,
As Belgium seeks glory, they stumble and fall.
Critics may ponder, "Where’s the spark in their play?"
In the shadows of talent, they search for the way.
But KDB stands tall, with hopes on his back,
A leader, a dreamer, he’ll never lose track.
For though the team falters, he’ll rise to the fight,
With vision and passion, he’ll bring them to light.
So here’s to the maestro, both brilliant and true,
In the heart of the struggle, we trust him anew.
While history remembers his legendary swing,
We celebrate KDB, our footballing king.
it’s actually a fair assumption
Belgium should’ve won the 2018 World Cup, no idea how France won (besides of course major time wasting, especially Mbappe). But after that Hazards form dropped too much and Lukaku missing sitters was becoming too often. Not mention alderwield and vertonghen and kompany were aging. Along with witsel and naingolan (I tried my best spelling these names) already past their primes, it was done after 2018. But damn did that 2018 team give me so much hope for them to win. Any other day Belgium wins that match, and definitely beat Croatia in the final. But it was not their day :(
Always respected how De Bruyne speaks his mind. He's a human being, he should be allowed to say what he thinks
Let him talk!🗣️
Let him talk!
I’m sorry but the fans have the right to boo and flip you off when you don’t play for the win.
4:40 DUUUUDE 😂🤣🤣🤣 Can you imagine 🤣🤣😭😭😭😭😭
Was I the only one that was expecting Mickey face on the club world club logo again? 😅
Dude's 33 so honestly they might as well reboot and draw a line under it. The whole previous generation just evokes failed potential.
Belgium wasted his best years what a shame.
Courtois is just a scummy guy, just an entirely self-interested. His actions professionally (and privately) all point to this.
@@arnabroy832 That’s not the only thing I hold against him.
De Bruyne says what the powers-that-be don't want people to hear, so I guess that's why they didn't let him talk before.

It's like how you say "Kun Agüero", not like the "Cohen" brothers or Leonard. ☺️
It's very unintuitive to people who don't know Dutch to pronounce "oe" as the English "oo" sound lol
Hazard declining killed this national team
Once he started to get injured a lot and sit on madrid's bench
Belgium was never the same, it was basically all in the hands of de bruyne to carry and he couldnt do it by himself without hazard on his side
So i do feel bad for him
They didn’t let him talk
It does seem like money speaks. Players keep signing multiyear contracts for millions… player wages are crazy nowadays and yet they complain when they have to play more to bring in more money
Belgium's problem is that they think they can do without kdb's cooking. Look at chelsea. They just let palmer cook. They're always keen to get him on the ball. Belgium almost look like they don't want to give him the ball.
Belgium is national team's Spurs and de bruyne might be Harry Kane for Belgium
Nah Belgium and spurs are just bad regardless if they have kane and kdb
Awful comparison.
You know, Spurs is basically England version of the club. 0 major trophies after long time.
If the world only knew the hidden talent Belgium has.
If only Raymond Goethals or Guy Thuys were in charge of this team
Also I hope Courtois never plays for Belgium again. He's a bad apple. Always has been (I'm half Spanish-half Belgian so I support both nations. Barca and FC Bruges on club level)

The fact is that the so called Golden generation was only Hazard. Just as Brazil was only Neymar for 10 years
True
Verthonghen Alderweild, KDB, Lukaku (even if his shot accuracy is bad) and Courtois? Felaini too. We just didn't have a good bench
Hope belgium won Euro before country split into two country
is the problem not the clubs that have 25 players and let almost always play the same 11. forced rotation, player cant play more than certain number of matches in 2 months, set so that a player will have to miss at least one match in that time.
Atalanta's young talent De Ketelaere could replace De Bruyne in time
And Openda from RB Leipzig will replace Lukaku
Coach Tedesco..he and coach Roberto Martinez are about the same.
The entire belgium team is a shell of it's former self
Belgium should have won the 2018 world cup
11:45 "Perhaps it's time to close the book [on playing for Belgium]. That's my opinion at least."
It's a good opinion and you make a very solid case.

Not to disparage the quality of the golden era team, but Belgium was cooked after Eden fell off.
There should be 11 winners on the pitch. Whoever isn't there to give it their all, honestly, is a weak point in your team. This was a game against France, a team with star players. You should want to beat them. I get a lack of enthusiasm against Qatar or Israel, but against France???
Honestly I i dont even watch these international matches anymore... Find them pointless

"Belgium Golden Generation" is and forever will be one of the most stupid and woke things ever in football.
Just because they had 3 good players they said it's a golden generation.
Around Hazard in 18 it was great
I honestly it's an emotional moment kinda thing. I don't think he's going to just leave the national team. They'd be total ass without him.
Who is here after he retired?
Really sad for KDB.
But sad thing for international players. There is only chance to win 2 trophies in 4 yrs, so probability of any great team winning it is low already. Also, sad how Belgium ended, hazard dropping off, coutiuria having a fight, KDB frustrated...
Coutiuria? 😅
Good, international matches suck. Hope he gets back to City for a few more years and has a week off every international break.
Is your national team that bad?
Could never be Gerrard
Ohh you mean slip to lose the Epl title?

This isn't the first time we had a 'golden generation' that took 3rd place on a world cup. Our clubs need to have a certain % of Belgians in their squad so young talent isn't overlooked anymore. But we are still a small country. You cannot expect us to have a team like France. But Greece once won the EC, just saying.
