- Castillo de San Marcos, translated as St. Mark's Castle, is the oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S. Construction on it began in 1672, when Florida was part of the Spanish Empire. The fort was under continuous military possession for 251 years until ownership was turned over to the National Park Service in 1933 and has been a popular tourist destination ever since.

I really enjoyed that thanks
So glad! Thank you for watching!
Oh the memories. I went there twice in elementary school and once in junior high on field trips plus I don't know how many family outings. I always liked walking along the river side of the Castillo and looking at all the cannon balls stuck in the walls for like three hundred years. The Fountain of Youth was fun too, but that water wasn't that great. When you leave the Castillo if you cross the bridge of Lions and head south on A1A just before you get to Matanzes inlet is Fort Matanzes, and it's even older, not as impressive but older. Thanks for the nostalgic trip
Wow, so glad we brought those memories back for you. It really was an amazing site to see.
