    The Lyra 8 really is a thing of wonder! I have had to literally put it aside and not touch it for three months because it became the one instrument I’d always play, forsaking even my eurorack setup in favor of it. I’ve even considered getting another one in either orange or green like yours. I run my Subsequent 25, MS-20 mini, and various eurorack systems and combos through mine due to it’s incredible delay, distortion, and Lfo. Effects pedal wise, a simple looper, the Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water and a Strymon Blue Sky somehow makes this incredible synth sound near-perfect in my opinion.

      @Sound_ology  3 роки тому +3

      Haha yeah my Lyra has definitely come between me and my keyboard practice routine before too! Never thought of using a looper with it, what do you use it for? Two Lyras would be crazy, if you had two people playing them you could probably have a pretty sick guitar-battle kind of thing, or you could go completely binaural with em

      Yeah, i too have falling down the Lyra rabbit hole.... i was going pretty strong with my newfound electro music making, and then came the Lyra.... Now, IT's been a solid three months straight of nothing but deep dives with Hologram Microcosm rounding out the field 🤦‍♂️.... At some point, i really need to get back to the "real" music creation world; but all i can think about right now is running the whole rig off power bank with battery-powered speaker so i can take the whole shebang out into nature and completely freak out 🤯🤯
      The Lyra, i just found out, can be run from a power bank off a 12V Ripcord.... So watch out, world! 🥳😍🌌

    I love my Lyra and I love how the comment section on Lyra 8 videos always seem to be more philosophy/psychology/theology and less technical/gearhead than the usual comments on synths. It's really beautiful, as is the Lyra-8!

    HI thanks for your enthousiasm! And Soma, not only Lyra but also Cosmos and Pulsar merits it. You made the point: when you have since a long time a solid keyboard and guitar culture it is difficult to create out of the rails and Lyra brings freedom, easyness and surprise that it is so hard to come back to an usual synth hardware.
    And much easier and cheaper than a modular wall!
    The trick is not to try to play Lyra with notes but let the sounds evolve and penetrate your brain to open unexpected doors.
    The fact to not record patches is key, because one new day is one new disposition to hear new sounds.

    Hi thanks for the video -- agree with all your points. A question I've been posing to various people posting videos about the synth -- what do you make of all the FM circuits, other than for chaos-making purposes? Meaning, do you have an approach for using the FM for "musical" (subjetive, I know) purposes? It seems useful to creating percussive patterns -- as you show in the video. But I haven't yet found a way to use cross-modulation to gently color the sound .

    • @Sound_ology
      @Sound_ology  2 роки тому +3

      I haven’t explored the FM that much in terms of more deterministic playing. My workflow is generally kind of backwards for it because I always tune my oscillators with the FM off. Then as soon as I turn on the FM modulation everything moves to playing outside… This has me wanting to try to tune the oscillators with the FM on, very interesting comment, thank you for the inspiration!

    If these sounds were implemented into a DAW with the use of feedback loop & sidechain compression via buses this could have a Ben Frost feel all over it.

    Searched for days and I´ve found some videos abt the L-8, and always someone tried to play it like an organ or like a piano. But I think, its inner spirit develops, when common trails are left and disorder is allowed. The same is in human brain, it isn´t organized like a modern digital piano, fully controlled, but rather as a Lyra, and always the disorder isn´t far away :) so this is spiritedness. For me, L-8 may be a prozess of self analysis and at this point I remind, that the constructor is a philosopher. Like in "Elektro Moskva", one of its protagonist, Richardas Norvila aka Benzo, is a philosopher too and a psychotherapist, open minded and his thoughts of music find a counterpart in your very differentiated and inspiring video! Many tnx!! d(*_*)b Peter

    • @Sound_ology
      @Sound_ology  2 місяці тому +2

      hell yeah, I'd recommend a bass amp though because the bass register is awesome. Make sure to turn down the Lyra's output so it doesn't overload the amp input too much though.

  • @floozyspeak

    Thanks for making this- its intimidating to me still. But i have to try tuning first and i dont know crap about that process really but i get your point. Like I dont know jack in terms of how to play but i love devices like the lyra because of that pure sense of expression- but at some point a user needs to feel a sense of mastery in the chaos, when ya get there, product lock loyalty just boom heh.

    • @Sound_ology
      @Sound_ology  3 роки тому +7

      Yes! I consider the tuning process part of the fun of it, and it is more difficult than the actual playing of it. You can use your voice and harmonize with the existing notes, or use a different instrument, or even use a song, just tune the oscillators to fit in with the song, then turn off the music! Maybe I’ll make a video showing a bunch of different methods of tuning a Lyra, that would be really fun

    Does this quickly get pitchy when playing with other synths?

    • @Sound_ology
      @Sound_ology  2 роки тому +2

      I find it works pretty well with other synths, even if the tuning is on the loose side. More than anything it just sounds thick. But once you get a piano or guitar involved you’ll probably want to use a tuner. Something about them seems to require tighter tuning, maybe because they stretch tuning in their own way
