SEYDEL HANDS-ON VIDEO: TUNING THE STEEL REEDS OF A SEYDEL HARMONICA

The best tool to tune a stainless steel reed is a rotary tool with a suited diamont coated grinding tip. Stainless steel is a lot more sturdy than brass so we recommend to use a grinder instead of a file. Please take care to remove material always only from the middle of the reed - produce no scratches crosswise to the direction of the reed! Removing material at the tip end results in raising the pitch whereas removing material at the rivet-end results in a lower pitch.
Re-gapping the reed offset will perhaps be required after the tuning procedure. In the video (and in the SEYDEL factory) we use a concert pitch of 443 Hz which results in 441Hz with covers mounted and harder playing pressure. More info about temperaments can be found here:

Das beste Werkzeug zum Stimmen von Stimmzungen aus Edelstahl ist ein elektrisches Schleifgerät mit einer diamantierten Schleifspitze in geeigneter Form. Edelstahl ist viel härter als Messing und daher ist ein elektrischer Schleifer viel besser geeignet als eine Stimmfeile. Bitte achten Sie darauf, dass Sie nur Material aus der Mitte der Stimmzunge abtragen: Schleifen am offenen Ende der Zunge erhöht die Tonhöhe, Schleifen am Nietende senkt die Tonhzöhe ab. Achten Sie darauf IMMER in Längsrrichtung zur Stimmzunge zu schleifen, damit sich keine Kratzer quer zur Stimmzunge bilden.
Nach dem Schleifen könnte ein erneutes Einstellen des Lösabstands nötig sein. Im Video (und in der Produktion bei SEYDEL) benutzen wir den Kammerton 443 Hz - dieser resultiert mit aufgeschraubten Schalldeckeln und höherem Spieldruck in einer Basis-Frequenz von ca. 441Hz. The tunning frequency for harmonicas is always 443 Hz for A4 note?!

Javier Vitali Herrero Usually a cold and not wet SEYDEL harmonica is tuned to concert pitch 443Hz. This means if you play it loud it sounds at about 441Hz. Depends also on your preferences and playing style.

Can you please make a video showing how to tune a chromatic? I know the principles are the same, but I'd like to see how you avoid damaging the wind savers when some of them will rest against the desk/table. Thanks!

you just have to be very careful with the valves not to bend them too much. Or you are able to replace them by yourself what is necessary anyway from time to time.
