IN THIS SCENE: Meet Sue as she discusses her relationships throughout her life . . .
ABOUT THE FILM: "Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man."
Starting in 1964 with Seven Up, The UP Series has explored this Jesuit maxim. The original concept was to interview 14 children from diverse backgrounds from all over England, asking them about their lives and their dreams for the future. Every seven years, renowned director Michael Apted, a researcher for Seven Up, has been back to talk to them, examining the progression of their lives.
From cab driver Tony to schoolmates Jackie, Lynn and Susan and the heart-breaking Neil, as they turn 49 more life-changing decisions and surprising developments are revealed.
An extraordinary look at the structure of life in the 20th century, The UP Series is, according to critic Roger Ebert, "an inspired, almost noble use of the film medium. Apted penetrates to the central mystery of life."
OFFICIAL SELECTION: New York Film Festival
"Easily one of the most fascinating sociological experiments in not just film history but history itself." - Premiere Magazine

Does anyone know the name or details of a similar social program which
existed in other countries such as USA , Canada and New Zealand ?
I read somewhere that a similar thing existed in the USA but it was
terminated due to a high suicide rate among participants and that the
adult children took the matter to court and won.
Does anyone have more details ?

I recently discovered the series. I was sad, as it progressed, to see all the women settle down and have children at such young ages. Maybe it's because only four females were chosen, would have loved to have seen one of them aspire for more.

Aspiring means different things to different people
If that's what they thought would be the most fulfilling route for them then it should be fine with everyone else....
      Success is also subjective
To one person success would be
      Getting into a top university
      To others
      Running a market stall
And to those who've already graduated the top Uni and run a market stall the greatest success would be having a child.
Life is a very personal journey and we each must live it according to our own desires and ever changing whims

@@nicolemurphy2629 I think what the OP means is that it was sad to see that the stereotype manifested in almost all the girls chosen for the program. The interviewers asked them very stereotypical questions early on in life about boyfriends, family and kids, and even though many of them (especially Jackie) were strongly opinionated against the kind of stereotypes subjected, they ended up actually fulfilling those stereotypes. It shows just how hard it is for individuals to escape their social environments. In this case, even though women's liberation and feminist movements happened along side the adolescent years of these women, all of them fell into the traditional route in terms of relationship and family.
It is just one of the many harrowing aspects of the series, where you get to witness the adult individuals bow in front of society in ways they did not accept in their youth.

well, for me, I think she was wearing way too much makeup in the previous years (she looked so pale, it looked like she would pass out at any moment), but in 49up, her makeup was far more subtle.
