    • @xiaohuli96

      No, it's really hard. Learning a new language always is, but I think sign language is even harder, because you don't use your voice. It is something completely different. Still, it's a beautiful language and in my opinion totally worth putting the effort into, even though it would probably take years.

    I LOVE SWITCHED AT BIRTH KATIE IS SO BEAUTIFUL SO IS BAY

  • @Sailorshayna
    @Sailorshayna 9 років тому +228

    For the commenter "machinedrum17" who is disappointed Katie isn't actually deaf and then proceeded to compare her role as a deaf person while she is actually hearing to a white person playing a hispanic/black role and then continuously deleted my comments: Katie has Meniere's Disease, she is ACTUALLY considered partially deaf. I also suffer from Meniere's Disease and can vouch for that. You talk about how it is unfair to the deaf community- people like Katie and I are part of that deaf community. I have hearing aids, I sign, I read lips and I am recognized by the government as a disabled person under the category of deaf/hearing loss. One day, Katie and I will be COMPLETELY deaf, just like her role as Daphne is completely deaf. Due to the nature of her character, she needs speech. For those shows where they do "what ifs" and because they do actually like her to be able to speak in general. In regards to your comparison of a white person playing a black/hispanic role to her playing a deaf person, it's irrelevant and incorrect. Would you deny that a half black person is not allowed to play the role of a black person in a show/movie? No, you wouldn't. Why? Because they're still black. Just as Katie is still deaf. She is lucky to not be completely deaf yet, but she will be one day. I don't think you have the right to discredit her.
    "I win :)"

      In addition- Vanessa Marano is not hispanic, she is Italian.....yet I don't see you getting angry about that?

      amen to that. I'm partially deaf in both ears and have been since birth due to recurring ear infections. I've been learning asl for when my hearing goes completely. it has helped me communicate with a man that comes into the store I work at who is deaf and tho I don't know much his face lights up when he sees me because he knows we can communicate some

    • @boydiv
      @boydiv 8 років тому +6

      yeah i knew your trouble, but i think its bescause the video is more for the fans of sab, and the most od them are not deaf. But its true, at least they could had add subtitles...

    • @georgeytg
      @georgeytg 8 років тому

      There are subtitles in the video (not yt ones but it says what every phrase means)

    • @mila.inthewoods
      @mila.inthewoods 8 років тому +4

      that's not what she's talking about though, George. she's talking about the type of subtitles that play throughout the video so that a Deaf of hard of hearing person can read exactly what the people are saying. not JUST for the phrases in ASL. those phrases that Katie signed are captioned mostly for the hearing people, because obviously the Deaf ones who know ASL wouldn't need the captions for those phrases.

    I didn't get to ask anyone to prom with signs, but...I was at work last week, I work as a volunteer at a hospital part-time for school, and while I was heading in, a deaf girl stopped me, and was trying to ask me where the cafeteria was. It was SO cool! She didn't orally speak, but I actually understood about 60% of what she said, and I responded back, as best as I could, in ASL! And then her family came, and asked me where the cafeteria was, but it was such an amazing experience!

    It's more that because of their deafness, most of them become visual thinkers. They are more perceptive visually than most hearing people. They can catch all those signs because their visual memory is so advanced compared to most people.

    I want to be an Early Childhood Educator, and I'm already a certified paraprofessional at 18 years old, so I have decided that, like Daphne's character, I'd like to use ASL to help deaf children learn and achieve their goals in life. Thank you Switched at Birth for the idea! I can't wait! College starts in a couple of weeks, and I've already been driving my family insane by signing instead of speaking! Lol! Also, Katie Leclerc, GREAT job on the accent!! As a thespian, I cannot, for the death of me, learn ANY accent! Ha! This is my ALL TIME favorite TV show, and I'll be seriously depressed once season 5 ends and the show is over. It's been truly inspiring to me! I just started watching it 4 or 5 months ago on Netflix, and I watched the last episode of season 4 tonight. Thank you to the entire cast and crew for all of the excellent life lessons, societal relations, emotional rollercoasters, and love you've given through ABC's Switched at Birth! Sincerely, Ashton Willingham

    I'm learning Sign Language on my own because I can't get the classes and I learned a lot through books and videos. There are many ways to say things in ASL the way she said, "How are you?" was not incorrect. However, there is an altered way to say it.

    Not necessarily. I'm from Canada, speak English, Japanese, Finnish, as well as American and Japanese sign language and learning British sign. If you've got the resources, you should take them, you've got the internet so you'll always have people around the world to practice with and maybe one day what you've learned will come in handy if you need to interpret something for someone, or even just to know it for yourself. :) I'm sure Swedish sign is great too. ^_^

    The last signed sebtence seemed more SEE, not ASL. The sentence structure seemed more of SEE (Signed Exact Englush).

      Jane Doe It's SEE (Signing Exact English) or PSE (Pidgin Signed English) as opposed to proper ASL. In ASL, for "Do you want to go to prom with me?" would be more along the lines of "Future, prom you go with me?"

      I don't think there was really enough time for her here to explain that, though, so she taught them more literally, so to speak, or word for word with SEE, like you said. She probably would have done it differently otherwise, with proper ASL, since it is part of her culture and one of her languages. :)

      So... there is a difference?
      I'm just learning ASL and one person says a word is one sign and another a different sign and so I'm getting absolutely fucking confused.
      So is SEE just the formal academic way to sign where PSE is more everyday talk and differing interpretation of what is said?

    • @InternetFad
      @InternetFad 10 років тому +2

      Max Stirner Nope...
      Alright. ASL is the actual language used by most of the deaf community. It has its own grammar and sentence structure rules. PSE and SEE are sort of 'adaptations' that are used more commonly by hearing people who have spoken English in the past.
      ASL grammar also uses facial expression and nodding to convey parts of the grammatical rules in a sentence. For instance, you would nod to verify that you had done something and would shake your head to indicate the opposite.
      Using SEE, someone would sign
      "I go to store"
      Using ASL someone might sign
      "Store I go"
      There are a lot of informative resources online about learning ASL. It definitely helps to have a teacher offline who can help you out though :)
