It's sad how difficult things have become in the present generation. I was wondering how to utilise some money I had. I used some of it for e-commerce business, but that sank. I'm thinking of how to use what's left to invest, but I don't really know which way to go.

It's a good idea to seek advice at the moment, unless you're an expert yourself. As someone who runs a service business and sells products on eBay, I can tell you that the economy is struggling and many people are struggling financially.

Due to my demanding job, I lack the time to thoroughly assess my investments and analyze individual stocks. Consequently, for the past seven years, I have enlisted the services of a fiduciary who actively manages my portfolio to adapt to the current market conditions. This strategy has allowed me to navigate the financial landscape successfully, making informed decisions on when to buy and sell. Perhaps you should consider a similar approach.

If buffet selling, then is this a good time to buy stocks? I know everyone is saying stocks are at a discount and all but just how long will It take to recover or am I better off putting my money elsewhere. I need a lot as rent, inflation alone eat up almost all of what I make with dependents and other obligations included. Tbh it's an uncertain year for me.

I got laid off from my STEM research job in Biotech April 2023. I was at the peak of my career. I always took a good job with health benefits, PTO, and disability insurance for granted since my lab skills were in high demand and I am an American with no visa needs. Not so now. I was forced to take a contract worker temporary position for 1/3rd the pay and zero health insurance or benefits of any kind. It's hourly wage so when the company closes to honor Memorial Day, I just go home without pay and make do.

The establishment survey, which is based on calling up businesses on the phone, and the household survey, which is based on directly asking individuals about their employment. Number of full-time employed from the household survey decreased 400k from April to May 2024. From the establishment survey it was an INCREASE of 272k. Please watch Free to Choose and the discussion of inflation. Wages have not kept up with inflation, wages are the last price impacted by inflation, not the cause.

    • @geoffgjof
      @geoffgjof 3 місяці тому

Wages aren't even across the economy. The can vary depending on what the job is and where it's located.
I get what you're saying, but arguably tech wages is an area of the market where capital was miscalculated during low interest rates because of the scalability of software applications across the wider economy (so venture capitalist investors would get the most bang for their buck if they backed a winning company; or even something like Uber that didn't make money, but filled a market need because of government restrictions due to regulation; and so it allowed the investors to cash out stock before everything falls apart later).
Right now companies like Uber are still operating and providing life support for jobs throughout the economy. But once those companies are confronted with not making money, and they close up shop; then that's where the real hurt will start.
Anyway, back to your original comment:
Many wages in other industries are lagging behind the price increases. We should see wages continue to uptick slightly, but that will then most likely cause more price increases throughout consumption goods in the economy.
There will definitely be winners and losers in this. I recommend people to read about Weimar Germany and the types of jobs that enabled people to get enough wage increases to scrape by.

I live in Los Angeles, California. We have a $297 Billion Dollar Budget Deficit for the State. We have high gas prices, food prices, and housing prices, but we have a good weather climate. I ride the bus and most people get off in Beverly Hills, to work. The rich employee, the poor suffer, and the middle class continue to get squeezed. Squeezed orange man bad. So, what does that mean for the future for the next generation. It means, they are screwed. No marriages, no family, no house, and not enough income. But they have the weathermen. I think CPI generally under reports inflation. Inflation was so bad that the under reporting was more extreme. GDP gets adjusted for inflation, so if CPI is too low, the adjustment doesn't work and you end up showing growth when there is none. The higher cost of living and interest rates have been forcing more people to downsize from expensive properties which has resulted in the housing market being skewed to the higher end, so even though individual house prices are dropping, the market indicators would suggest they are rising. The birth/death model in the job data doesn't work in this environment. Job ad data is grossly inflated by the rise in ghost jobs. It's just an idea, it may be a load of rubbish, but it would explain the discrepancy between what the indicators say and how people feel about the economy.

The economy we have right now is a economy of people with vastly different realitys. People who make less than $90,000, $83,000 a year are struggling with high costs of everything. Fuel prices are down for the moment, but food prices remain high, home Depot stuff is still high, pick up prices are high, financing homes, vehicles is high priced, credit card interest rates are higher. And Black Rock has control of our collective savings however by the time we get to actually use the money in IRAs/ 401s our life savings are eaten up by inflation While Black Rock controls everyone's savings and invest that money in foreign countries which is why the Government has to keep printing money to provide social services for the middle classes so the masses of people will not Riot. Which is why we have inflation.

The stock market is not a metric of the real economy; the economy that is reflected in their paychecks, availability and cost of housing.
I.e., the last raise received. The term "Gaslight" is the title of a 1938 movie, starring Ingrid Bergman, is a story of a woman who has experienced past trauma. She's oddly attracted to a man who knows of her family fortune and begins a campaign of manipulation to convince her she's going mad, by hiding things she's seen recently and convincing her they've been gone for a long time, etc..
To your point, it's obvious that there are no fractional reserve requirements. Deposits are not available in full for DAYS after they're made. The banks are in trouble.

  • @johnsavers1168

Although you were not clear on the origin of the term "gaslighting," leaving casual observers to possibly infer that the term was one of the recent "hip" expressions of American youth, as you admit that your children were well familiar with the term "gaslighting," while you were not, the popular term arose from the movie GASLIGHT (1940), which was released in the U.S. under the title of ANGEL STREET. It was a British psychological thriller and well done. In fact, Hollywood quickly made a remake GASLIGHT (1944), and this time major actors were used. It was more popular than the Brit film which inspired it. This was the way the film name entered the American culture to describe a malevolent form of psychological manipulation. Its usage today has witnessed a dilution of its original force. If you have the time and opportunity, view them both, beginning with the 1940 original and following with the 1944 version. If you care to play with this theme, you might even recognize a real-life version playing out in national politics.

    • @deyemeracing8795

@@Ambassador_Gkar it's not a new term at all. In fact, the play, Gas Light, was written in the 1930s, and made into a movie screenplay in the '40s. The term didn't just appear for no reason and with no meaning. It has to do with a husband in the story turning the (gas) lights up and down, and doing other things, to make his wife think she was going insane. There was a book written I think in the late 1980s, "Gaslighting: How To Drive Your Enemies Crazy." The methodology is dated, but it's an amusing read and can inspire you to understand how people and entities can "gaslight" people. The old adage still applies - "if you can't convince 'em, confuse 'em!"
The term "gaslighting" is more specific than the more generic "propaganda."

Just out of curiosity, I did a bit of research, to understand why I had never heard of the term before.
As someone of the older generation, I checked an older dictionary: a 1990s version of an English concise one; it was not recognised under the term, gaslighting. Only mentions about the combustion of coal gas. Also, understand I am from a country that identified with the English until around some 30 years ago: New Zealand. So, it's easy to comprehend why I hadn't heard the term before.
So, I did what younger people do, I 'Googled it 😁.' One site, 'psychologytoday' talks of where it came from. Tells of the same compositions, in the 1930s, you mentioned.
It _definitely_ fits into the US intel's mould of abusing other Humans. I especially liked the description of who would employ it, under the heading of, 'who becomes a gaslighter,' "Those who employ this tactic often have a personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder and psychopathy..." Apt way to identify with trolls, like the woke brigade, running this platform.
It wasn't understood to be an actual word, IMO, until the Intel community usurped it, & incorporated it into their ESG agenda. Though I readily _do_ accept your statement as being helpful, & truthful.
Thanks for making me educate myself, _and_ having a good laugh, all at once 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@l.a.mottern3106 Yes, I am guilty of same in spite of my comment above. When I do force myself to view MSM it's for the reason you stated and that is a very sad commentary on the state of American news today. FWIW I believe that we are in the early stages of what will be the worst election cycle we've ever experienced in my lifetime and I fear that the aftermath of this election from hell will stretch right through the end of 2024 right into 2025 and beyond. The last place I'll go for information is the corporate news outlets that are the official manufacturers of consent for the vast majority of Americans; no wonder we have so many problems in America today!

Inflation is an individual number. If you make 1 million per year, the price of eggs is irrelevant. If you struggle to make ends meet every $ counts.

Its relative still because while the cost of eggs is irrelevant, the cost of your golf club membership and your boat docking and maintainance fees also inflates and those are relevant.

@@tatagata6268 budrens too are relative. I know people who complain about egg prices but instacart their groceries and uber eats 70% of their meals and are in debt. Most burdens are self inflicted is my point really. We all make our own choices and none of us are immune to the concequences.
