    Ian you forgot just as important if not more; the Cargo Carry Capacity. Towing is one thing but being able to handle the total weight of cargo in the back of the SUV, passengers, gas tank volume and tongue weight are huge issues even for large SUV's

    • @USNavyAR5

      Richard hit the nail on the head. Cargo Carrying Capacity is the #1 factor right from the start. Then GVWR, and lastly towing capacity. Look on the inside drivers side door jam for stated Cargo Carrying Capacity.

      What sucks is that many different sites describe the information differently. We need a new vehicle for our family of 5 and want a camper too. It is very overwhelming to find out what we need. We want something with a 3rd row because our kids like to lean their seats back. They don't really like to be in a pickup for long trips. I'd like to not have to get something like a Suburban, but don't know if I'll have much choice. I don't know why they can't make a minivan that tows 5,000 lbs!! Any suggestions Richard?

      @@gregolson7499 Greg, this is a real quandary I'm afraid. I'm afraid the truck is your number one best choice but I raised three boys and fully understand their happiness helps Mom & Dad retain their sanity.
      Anther which you're already aware of is the Suburban, my choice would be the Toyota Sequoia. Another good possibility would be a used Chevy van. Some of them had great tow limits and great CCC.
      I'm afraid though in the end the truck is your best bet.
      The other possibility would be a Class C. There's some with besides the overhead bunk have bunk beds. Those can handle a large crew of family and kids. Please keep me posted on which way your leaning :)

    Max Tow is the last number you should consider when matching a trailer to a tow vehicle. Your vehicles payload capacity, the GCVWR, and axel ratings are much more important, especially concerning mid size SUVs and vehicle s not necessarily designed with towing as a primary factor. Trailer hitch weight, passengers and cargo are all deducted from your payload capacity and you will Max this number out long before you max out on towing. So if you have and SUV with a max payload of 1,200 lbs. Minus out 500 lbs of people and a hitch weight of 400 lbs that only leaves you 300 lbs of buffer for gear or weight distribution hitches that can 100 lbs or more, and you are very close to being max out and have a heavy squat on the back end of your SUV. Be safe people, take what the sales man says with a grain of salt. Check your vehicle weight limits yourself and stay within.

      Bradley, I agree that there are several factors to consider when towing, much more than just tow capacity. You can see that I go into some of the math and factors to consider in the following video (ua-cam.com/video/bmWg6_Wk1rw/v-deo.html) to help people better understand what to look for when considering towing. This is so overwhelming for a first time camper purchase. I’m interested in several different model campers but I’m so confused on which one, if any will be possible. There are certain requirements I need in a camper like a bathroom or wet bath, a separate dining and sleeping space, if not then it isn’t even worth it. I don’t want to have to convert a dining table to bed. I want to feel comfortable. I have the 2023, Honda Passport EX-L, V6 engine, AWD. I’m told the towing capacity is 5000 lbs but now I’m finding out that it doesn’t even matter. I was looking at the nuCamp 400, Little Guy Max, Flagstaff E-Pro E19FBS, but mostly liked the inTech sol horizon. If these aren’t even possible then why bother purchasing a camper at all?! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I certainly don’t want to purchase something that isn’t going to work for me.

      @@monicae67 Good morning. I Randomly clicked on notifications and found your post. I'll try and help you out the best I can.
      I took a look at the Passports specifications. It appears that to be able to tow 5,000 lbs. You need a Accessory tow package that is Honda dealer installed. See specs. PDF, for Passport sub-clause #2. So go to your dealer and talk to the service department to see if this is already done. or can be done.
      Now, on the driver door panel find the yellow sticker that states you cars payload limit. Hopefully it is above 1000 lbs. Next add up the weight of people and gear that will travel in the car. Subtract that from the over-all payload number and what's left is what's available for the trailer's hitch weight, that will also be subtracted from that payload limit.
      Most of those trailers you where looking at have a GVWR of 3,500 lbs. and hitch weights of less than 500 lbs. So they should be with in the limits. The tabs would be better towing than the boxy E-pro. Smaller, narrower, lighter. All look at the
      R-Pods.
      I hope this helps. Cheers from Canada

  • @thestooges333
    @thestooges333 2 роки тому +12

    If he’s saying a vehicle that can tow 3,500 lbs can tow any of these trailers it’s a lie!
    If you got a vehicle that tows 3,500 lbs the most you can tow is a 2,800 lbs trailer that is fully loaded.
    Most of these are around 3,500 lbs unloaded give or take a couple hundred pounds , once loaded they’re over 4,000 lbs or close to it.
    Whatever your vehicle tows take off 20% and that’s what you can tow safely.
    Plus you go by loaded weight not unloaded weight of the trailer.
    Tow at the limit it’s only a matter of time before your engine and transmission blow up especially going up mountains.
    Tow with the brains in your head not the ones in your butt. Your life depends on it.

      I agree with these models, the mfg websites seem to say the dry weight is like 3000 lbs. But the GVWR is in the 4000. So I think a 3500 lb GVWR like a mazda cx-9 awd won't be able to tow these.

    This video is a bit misleading since towing capacity is one of the LAST things to consider when trying to tow with an SUV. MUCH more important is payload and GCWR, since you may be able to (theoretically) tow 5,000 lbs. with a particular SUV, BUT if your payload is only say 1,500 lbs., you will be at your payload (10-15% of trailer weight as hitch weight, passengers, cargo, etc.) WAY before you reach your towing capacity. I have now had 5 travel trailers, and have made sure that the tow vehicle has MORE than enough payload and GCWR to handle the job. I am always amazed at the number of TT's being towed down the road by vehicles which are nowhere near safe enough to tow them Not safe at all...putting themselves and others on the road around them at risk, simply because their dealer told them that the vehicle could tow a certain amount. Towing capacity is a big game that all manufacturers are playing, and it does not serve the public well because of the fact that you may be overloading your vehicle's axles, trans, and engine without getting anywhere near its towing capacity.

    • @mondvogel6124
      @mondvogel6124 3 роки тому

      how would a payload of 1,500 lbs be problematic.... say you have tongue weight of 500lbs, that is 1,000 remaining; 4 passengers at say 150lb average, and you have 400 lbs left; what else would you cram in that SUV

      Ian Baker here and I completely agree and always recommend safety first. The last thing anyone wants is to burn up a transmission or destroy the suspension of a tow vehicle. Every situation requires the proper calculations as something as simple as traveling with full water tanks can greatly alter the ability to properly tow the trailer when you have a smaller tow vehicle. Hey Monica, Ian Baker here and I’m sorry you’re feeling overwhelmed, but I completely understand! Those are all really nice options and most should be possible for you to tow but will be pushing it. Honestly though, I would STRONGLY recommend the new Coleman Lantern 17R that JUST came out. It’ll be easily towable by your Honda Passport (it’s under 4,500 GVWR) and is a much lower financial commitment than some of the others you have listed here. That way you can firstly make sure you enjoy RVing and hopefully take some of the pressure off from your first time purchase. We just filmed a walkthrough of it and hope to have it up on UA-cam in the next week or so. So be sure to subscribe so you can see as soon as we publish it!

      Yes, it would be. It should have around 3,500 tow capacity. Make sure you account for everything you plan on putting in your RV (including water in the fresh water tank) to determine if you can pull it. You'll also need to know the payload capacity of the vehicle as the tongue weight of the trailer, plus passengers and gear can often times be an issue for mid-size SUV's.

      Great question!
      I'd recommend learning more about RV weight ratings in this article: blog.campingworld.com/find-your-rv/rv-buying-guide-understanding-rv-trailer-weight-ratings/
      Many RVers also follow what's known as the 75 or 80% rule, which states that the total weight of your trailer when loaded shouldn't exceed 75-80% of your vehicle's towing capacity.
      So that would be 4,000 pounds for your 4Runner. If you're interested, here's another collection of lightweight trailers to consider: blog.campingworld.com/find-your-rv/great-lightweight-travel-trailers-under-3000-pounds/

Granted these are all UVW, so you'll have to be REALLY careful with the Coleman and R-Pod if your tow vehicle has a 3,500 lb rating. Even though you can technically tow them, you'd have to pack most of your gear in another vehicle. The NoBo, Jay Flight and E-Pro are honestly better options for a 3,500 lb tow capacity vehicle.
      1) NoBo 10.6 = 1,760 lbs
      2) R-Pod RP153 = 3,159 lbs
