Learned a lot in this. I knew about recording actions, but I always thought I had to record the entire action at once. I wasn't aware that I could do it in steps. Great video! Thanks for teaching me something new today!
Thank you very much for the revision. You can always make videos on trending effects in fashion and street photography. Like whats going to be in 2025 the color tones and effects. It will be fun to stay updated. 👌
Excellent question! Let's break down the differences: Command+J creates an exact copy of the selected layer. Also it preserves all layer properties, including blending modes, opacity, filters, and layer masks. New Layer/Apply Image creates a new layer with the content of the selected layer or a specific selection. I hope that answers the question!
Would Smart Objects not work with Actions? Seems like that would be easier to tweak settings after the fact compared to re-running the action over and over to dial it in.
Hey Rob, Tou can record actions in Photoshop that involve smart objects. However, there are a few things to keep in mind: You cannot directly record the action of opening a smart object within an action. This is because the "Edit Contents" command is not recordable. Also, Actions cannot record the specific edits made within a smart object. Once you open a smart object, the actions will record the steps performed on the smart object's content, but not the process of opening and closing it.

Great video as usual! May I ask is there a difference between a command+J, Duplicate Layer and the New Layer/Apply Image you used here?
