  • In this video series I am building a small A-frame cabin based on Deek Diedricksen's Transforming Cabin design. Part 1 is floor construction.
    You can get the design from Deek's website for $29.99

    I like the floor idea. I have seen that done with old, thrift store Atlas pages. The wrinkle add character.

    All those wild ferns could be moved and reused. You working alone gives me hope i could do a cabin myself someday.

    Hi Phil! Loved the series, man. Really great job. If you do an update video in the future, can you let us know your bookings have been? Looking into doing this myself and would love some first hand experience. Thanks for posting these!

      Well, I can just tell you: finished this up fall of 2020. Had it available on Hipcamp all summer this year (2021) and it's been booked on average about 2 days a week I would say.

    I binge watched the whole series. Great stuff! I have the same plans and should start building soon. You have very nice vegetation in your area. Where about are you located? Any tips on finding good 2*6s for the floor joists? Go to a lumber yard? Local home depot has warped and twisted boards.

      Glad you enjoyed the series! I'm up in the pacific northwest near Seattle. I just got my lumber from Lowes. They seemed to have ok stuff.

    What is the hight and length of this cabine sir.

    Hey Phil, thanks for documenting. For the floor, did you buzz 3" off all of the 10' floor joists, to fit within the 10' headers and have a finished overall cabin floor width of 10'?

    • @philbrown5722
      @philbrown5722  3 роки тому

      Hmm. It's been a few months. I don't remember exactly how I fitted the floor joists, but the final exterior dimensions were 8 x 10, because I didn't do any trimming of the plywood sheets I used for the floor.

    • @densaunders3
      @densaunders3 3 роки тому

      The third sheet you cut width wise, so it could have been 2’3” (as opposed to 2’). Might be overthinking it, but would need to make the a frame angles a little shallower if you went out to a finished 10’3”.

    • @philbrown5722
      @philbrown5722  3 роки тому

      Oh, that's a good point, but as I recall it was cut exactly in half. That was definitely the goal. I was shooting for 8x10 floor space and would have trimmed the floor joists as needed to make that dimension (as best I could.)

    • @philbrown5722
      @philbrown5722  3 роки тому

      However, you could probably make it 10'3"... it wouldn't have really affected anything else. There are some tricky cuts for the peaks of the a-frames that would change (barely), but I laid those out anyway, so it would work the same but with a 3" wider base.

      Ooof. It's been a couple of months. I don't have a list. I would suggest checking out Deek Deidreksons design. It came with a list. I deviated from it somewhat, but it's a good starting point.
