I freaking love Cabrios. Grew up in them. My dad always had one. He had a 2001 and believe me, that engine is plenty peppy. I never felt like it "needed" more.
The clutch is 'springy' because it works on a cable, not a hydraulic system like most. I figure it's because the cabrio chassis is actually the mk3 with mk4 styling.
I never miss that door chime sound from my 1998 Jetta! I owned a 2001 Jetta and now own a new 2020 Jetta I bought on New Years eve! Great cars! A few electrical issues but none of them left me stranded!
I love the door chime! A former friend's mom used to own a '96 Jetta GLS. Loved that car but it sure had gremlins with the electronics. It was in accidents a few times and keys got bent. Had horrible legroom in back but very comfortable seats. Also had ice cold air! Got many a memory of riding around in it.
Well I sounded relaxed because I only had an hour of sleep & had woken up at 4:30am which causes many things. That includes not caring much about my surroundings, choice of words, & speak more the mind without thinking if what was said is appropriate or made any sense lol. Additionally this was an easy car to talk about. Did the Tiburon, LS, this Carbio, & have one last car from this day coming up next where I kept the same tone.
I know this video is 6 years old but there is no such thing as a MK4 Cabrio. This was known as a Mk3.5 Cabrio. It’s basically a mk3 from the windscreen back. There were not huge changes to the Mk3.5 compared to the mk3. Front end, steering wheel, shift knob, side airbags. That’s really about it. You can even see it. Dashboard and couple holders from a mk3.
One of my teachers a few years ago had one, but the GLX model, white, white top, black interior with leather... it was cute, but the 'la curacha' chime and air power looks were annoying... the new golf/gti/r cabrio is awesome! the cd changer is an option because my teacher's had a cassette player in the dash and she said it had a 6cd in the back that didn't work...
I'll be heading out to "Pick A Part" this weekend and will be searching for the 2002 Cabrio to get that door chime out of it for my 95. Noth8ing more irritating than the BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Of our "notifier".
It's a "peppy" engine but I still do agree. May add a few more horse to the 2.4 or even just go to a 2.2. 2 dozen more horse on this car would keep it at freeway speed and let it get there quick enough.

The cupholders up front weren't available in the German market. They had to make them for the U.S because only Americans find them necessary. LOL

Is this thing difficult/costly to maintain?

I have an automatic 02’ Cabrio myself! Same color and all that. Sure is a pain to find parts though!
