That is all excellent subject matter for a future video. Thanks for your suggestion - we take that into sincere consideration as we plan our future projects. And thanks for watching.
For all that stumble onto this video in 2021 and later, this was shot in 2013 when LED lighting were still expensive. These days, you can get a 2 LED panel lighting kit for as little as $150, maybe less, but won't be RGB, but will likely be Bi-color and dimmable though, meaning, they can range from 2700K to as much as 6400K in color temp. I bought a GVM 560AS 10x10" 2 panel kit for I think $170-200 with stands and case, and can accept batteries as needed. True, not the most powerful, but for interior scenes, often more than enough for my needs. I do intend to augment it in the future with at least another light and some smaller panels with RGB capabilities. Many of the smaller sized LED panels can be had for as little as $50 for kits with stands even for for the budget minded (forced or by choice) LED is now an affordable option.
This video is absolutely awesome! Lots of facts and comparisons, highlighting the pros and cons of each kind of light source - the best video I've seen so far for the beginner (and I've watched a lot of videos!).
With all respect to all the other B&H presenters -- I must say that the best videos from B&H are ALWAYS the ones with Mia McCormick! Three point lighting was never more interesting than it was in this video!
thank you B&H for thsi wonderfull video i m kids entertainer with magic and puppet shows so i m doing with my lights which is a very very basic led lights and halogen lights , but now i get to know for better output and clarity and i m shooting in my asus zenfone pro android mobile.
Chuck - thanks for answering my question. I've been buying my stuff from B&H for years (since the 70's) and have recently gotten serious enough to consider starting up a pet portrait business. Would the 3 light LED system demo'd here be a good choice for animals? I've already ordered a Canon 85mm 1.2 and now just need my lights and backgrounds. Thanks!
Hello, great video! I would like to ask you what kind of lighting set-up would I need for a home studio to take pictures of food products (like pies), in order to use (print) these pictures on the actual product packaging. Thanks!
Great, informative video! Thanks! Question, though: Nia said that a CRI of 90 was ideal for getting nice skin tones on humans - what is a good CRI for photographing dogs or cats in an indoor setup? And... is it different for black or white animals? Anyone? Thanks!
Hi - what model is the small LED IKAN light sitting on the bench on the mini stand at 0:40 in the clip - this looks like it's exactly what I'm after. Really helpful and informative BTW - thank you :)
The ikan ID500-v2 LED Studio Light with Touch Screen Dimming continues in the tradition of its predecessor, the ID500 by offering the equivalent of 300W of tungsten power at 5,600K in a slim 5.8 lb package. The big difference is that the ID500-v2 does away with old-school knobs in favor of an LCD touch screen with smooth dimming control from 0-100% in 100 steps. For units mounted overhead or in other hard to reach places, the ID500-v2 comes with an RF remote control that regulates power on/off, dimming and power output. Ok, for the very fact that you are even mentioning the VERY unsafe tungsten option in 2020... and not to mention the ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS pricepoints of led options that you are quoting??? I purchased an entire led setup for far less than the cost you mentioned!!! You guys are nuts! I'm moving on! I suggest others do the same... they're just trying to sell to the unsuspecting buyer!
great video thanks! also take a look at the Lustra 50 lights by PRL Lighting. Just saw these at NAB and they are very powerful for their size, and come in a nice 3 light kit in a backpack with some accessory etc.
About how much power lights are we talking here, and to what ISO, iris and shutter speed? Because all video's about 3 point lighting are about the 45 degree rules but no one mention distance, watt, iso, iris or shutterspeed. While these are important factors in recording an good quality. And what about combining diffrent color of lights?
Please email askbh [at] bandh [dot] com for a more detailed response. Try using more fill light or a large collapsible reflector to illuminate the skin (working at 90-degree angle with a reflector would help illuminate the skin texture); if shooting in a studio (or if it will not affect the background exposure), slightly over-expose the image by ½-2/3 of an f-stop to show more detail if the skin is the main focus. The lighting source is basically a moot point and more of a white balance issue.
Hi there. Many lighting professionals start as assistant on sets, where they learn all they can about lighting, and work their way up. In the meantime, B&H offers a wide range of DVDs, books, and downloadable videos on the craft of lighting: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?atclk=Covered+Topics_Lighting+Techniques&ci=1069&N=3948183954+4169487414. We hope this helps and thanks for your question.
+warriorwhite2 For this, your best bet will be to send us an email letting us know what camera you are using, as much information as possible for the venue(s) you will be shooting in, and roughly what your budget would be. We would then be able to make a couple suggestions. *Christina* AskLighting@bhphoto.com Christina S
Sure, LED's are great when lighting small areas and are easy to transport and set up. They use little power and many like the Ikan's in the video can in some cases use the same battery as your camera. C h u c k askbh{at}bandh{dot}com
The easiest way is with lights that have power settings. You can then set you main light (for example) at full power, your fill for half and a hair or background light at 1/4 power. A meter will measure the out put but you will have to adjust it. C h u c k askbh{at}bandh{dot}com
Color Rendering Index (CRI) describes how a light source makes the color of your subject appear to our eyes. The scale goes from 0 to 100 percent and the higher the value, the better the color rendering ability. A CRI value of 90 or higher is excellent and should be used when the most accurate color is needed. CRI is independent of color temperature. C h u c k askbh{at}bandh{dot}com
Well i just mention it, because specialists find many things normal and don't talk about it, but beginners got nothing on half of the information. So then the good intentness get lost from an educational video.
How should you white balance a canon g7x for these lights? www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008GWH7VE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 And is the color temperature the same as color rating index? Those lights temperature says 6500K

I'm thinking about creating videos like this one, ua-cam.com/video/2SGpG1NNXHw/v-deo.html, with my kids. What kind of lighting would work best. Our camera will be a little farther back than it is in this video. We want a more professional lighting setup than whatever they are using. Should we go with LEDs? CFL? Thanks!

I usually agree, but I must say Larry Becker's MX-1 review was pretty good too. Not as advertisement-like as usual, but more critical.

How do we measure that Contrast Ratio Mia mentioned ? Are there light meters available which are specifically designed for that task ?

if the led light get used up, can those lights be replaced like tungsten or fluorescent lights after 25000hrs?
Thanks.
thumb up.
