Grass carp for duckweed control

  • We've got a duckweed problem! So we're going to buy some triploid (sterile) grass carp to help get the duckweed under control in our pond.
The rule of thumb is to use 10 grass carp per acre of pond for general maintenance. Ours is about 2/3 acre so we're going to buy 7 of them and see if they help.
Hope these little fish are hungry!

Amazing Fish. These sterile fish were introduced into Lake Murray in South Carolina at least 20 years ago to combat Hydrilla which was getting out of control. They did their job. Time to start using them again..

Thanks for sharing this tip, Joel. Curious how it turned out now that it's been a few months?

Hi Erik. The duckweed removal process has worked out better than I hoped! The water level in the pond is quite low right now because of the drought, but it is essentially 100% free of duckweed!
Clearly most of the duckweed was removed by siphoning it out with the shredder pump as I showed in a different video (ua-cam.com/video/bEJ5soxBKcA/v-deo.html), but I expect the grass carp will keep it maintained nicely. The real test will be next summer I suppose.
In any case, I'd totally recommend trying either or both methods of removal--the effort is well worth it to see the water again!

I also have a duckweed problem and put Grass carp in in April. Have you noticed any results?

Absolutely! I just posted a video with the results today. Between these carp and removing much of the existing material with a shredder pump, it totally solved the problem.

Here’s a video update I made. Between the grass carp and shredder pump removal, the pond looks great a year later! ua-cam.com/video/0TraaIubdto/v-deo.html

Harvest that duckweed is a very good food for animals and chickens.37-40 % protein so raise some animal with free food.
