  • After three months of snowboarding it was a perfect day to get back in the kayak and shake the dust off. The White Salmon was at about 3.6' at Husum (and 3.1' at the Truss gauge), making for a nice medium flow on the Farmlands Section upstream of the Green Truss. We chose the little-used upper putin above Sidewinder because there were no parking spots left at the normal putin, and I'm glad we did. There's a fun seal launch (that I could have cleaned up by starting a little more to the left on the sloped rock) and some fun warmup rapids. Sidewinder cleans up at higher flows but looked pretty bad on this run so I portaged. The drops from there to Lava Dam were fluffy and satisfying. Lava Dam was not flowing the way it used to before the plug in the dam flushed, but there was enough water to run it, which I didn't get to do last year, so that was a treat.
Overall this is a fun, scenic, high quality, and relaxing run. You get some decent rapids but nothing that raises your heart rate too much. It's just wonderful class 4(5) whitewater in a pristine setting. Enjoy!
