Awww the memories.....the ‘good luck’ .....the ‘scramble’ sequence....the sound effects of the characters talking.....some of my all time fondest gaming memories
This really puts into perspective how crazy this game was. And 1993! I remember being completely floored by everything in this game and spent hours trying to master each course. And don't forget hitting the weird smiley center asteroids to get the special portal.
Yeah, about those competition carts. Wonderful promotion for the game. 1st prize in it was a bomber jacket, along with some other goodies, 2nd prize was a Star Fox T-shirt, and 3rd prize and beyond was some stickers or something. I still have my T-shirt to this very day.
Not really, no. The competition was hosted by Circut City, and was overseen by one of their employees. I barely even noticed him, until it was time to claim my t-shirt. I did have a few fans, though. Some kids were watching me as I released a bomb at a ship that hadn't started attacking me. They were like "aww, way too early!" Meanwhile I was whispering to myself "Go, go, go, go...." It detonated just as it started its assault. My timing was flawless. XD
Oh yeah what a great game this is. I played the hell out of it on my small TV in my room when I was a kid. LOVED the music. I'd finish the game time after time and just sat there and listen to the ending score and watching the graphics.
Met Jez San once. Maybe he was having a bad day, but the guy was NOT very friendly. Acting very stuck up and was talking down to everyone around him. He might be a great guy, but when I was in the same room with the guy, he was very off putting.
He should do a video on the legal drama surrounding the rumble pack from a few years back, where everybody but Nintendo had to drop it from their controllers.
I love this videos, because behind every video game there is a history that needs to be told. Thank you Gaming Historian, keep doing this invaluable job!
Excellent work. Star Fox has always been one of my favorite games on SNES. Every time I play it, so many memories come flooding in of the first time I rented it. Really enjoyed learning some new things about the production of the game. Looking forward to the next episode!
I remember extensively digging for Star Fox 2 stuff years ago and came across your videos. I'm still happy it finally came out and it being the finished version
The first time I played Star Fox as a kid, I remember getting scared when I got to the end of the first Corneria stage and had to face off against its boss. When that warning beep sounded followed by "incoming enemy" and the boss' health bar appeared on screen, I nearly dropped the controller in fear watching the Attack Carrier come up from behind, looming over Fox's Arwing as it turned around to prepare for battle. Then I picked the controller up, started firing at it pretty much nonstop and I kicked its ass!
I absolutely love programmes like these; even if there isn't anything new to learn, there's still nothing like a professional documentary on something you love.
The Super FX is great, but it wasn't one of the first GPUs. PCs had already had graphics co-processors for two years before the SuperFX, and that's only in domestic applications. Business workstations had had them since the early 80s.
Yeah but the incredible thing was they were able to get it onto an affordable home console. I remember when people were psyched about phones finally getting 4g of ram a few years back so they could play decent games in spite of the fact that PC benchmarks have been at 16g of ram for years prior. The point is the innovation allowed kids to access that power without needing their parent's entire paycheck.
Been waiting a while for another history lesson...now I finally got it. Great pick by the way to do starfox...a classic game that I feel that gets under appreciated
Can you do a history on Konami? Story of Castlevania and Contra as well? I'm not sure if you have one already, but I'm still watching your videos and love the history you have shared. Brings back memories
Starfox was one of he few games that, at the time, realy made me wish I had a SNES over Genisis as it realy was something different rather then just a better looking game. I used to ride to a store over half an hour away on my bike just to play the demo station there and when the competion came around to that store, I was good enough to get second place in it over many that owned the game.
Awesome, you are doing StarFox series. Even though my first SF game was SF Adventures because I was a fan of RARE and Nintendo at the time, I never got StarFox 64 because it was named Lylat Wars in my country and it never hit me until I saw a used cart of the 64 game and played though that after knowing that Dinosaur Planet game was going to have StarFox characters.
I know it was never released but I think that Starfox 2 is my favourite. Im not sure why but I think its just the fact that I have to fly around the Lylat system defending Corenria from missiles and stuff. It was just such a cool idea. You don't even have to beat the game if you want, you can just defend for as long as you can if you want. I wish the game had been released, there is so much replability in that game since enemy's and timing on missiles are all random.
I remember Argonaut before StarFox. They did a stunning Amiga game called Star Glider 2. Such a concept wasn't really attempted until No Man's Sky. Check out Star Glider 2 and ask what would a free roaming Star Fox had been like.
I wasnt born in the Snes Generation. But my uncle gave me his Snes in the 90s.Star fox in my opinion is an underrated game. i spent alot of my time on this game.
I wouldn't call it underrated. It's just kind of been over shadowed by Starfox 64, which is undeniably better. The original is still great though. I picked it up a few weeks ago and it still holds up which is more than I can say for a lot of early 3-D games.
Its very far from underrated. I'd say its the best one seeing as how they fucked up the controls for every one that came after it (yes, including 64) and mangled whatever semblance of story they had going. When I was in school no one would stfu about it which was fine because it was a distraction from the Mortal Kombat hype lol
I always liked the first game best. I really didn't like what they did with the ship design for the later games. They went from looking like a space fighter to looking like a toy..
In a youtube filled with Jon Tron-knock offs (i.e rambling, cut away gags, zoom ins/random playful shouting) hipster kids majoring in film making "review" videos. It's refreshing to see someone who lays it out in an informative articulate way, and ironically enough this very stripped down minimalist way of doing so feels MORE entertaining than the other reviewers/"historian" (for lack of a better word) videos online who try too hard to be "funny", quirky" and entertaining. In short great video!
As far as I know, the Super FX chip did not actually support the Super Nintendo CPU. Instead, it rendered the 3D graphics and cut each frame into tiles, which the Super Nintendo handled as normal 2D Images. This is the reason why no Super FX game aside from Yoshis Island has a smooth framerate / full screen drawing. It's not a lack of power in the Super FX (2) chip, but the bridge between rendering the full picture and breaking it up into tiles that takes too much time.
I used to have this game and have beaten the shit out of it 1000 times but haven't even thought of it in years. This game was really awesome. The characters were lovable and fun and the actual gameplay was fun.
As with Battletoads, none of the Starfox games that came after were as good as the first one. The challenge was what I loved and when they watered them down it wasn't the same for me.
I like to call the original Star Fox "the video game version of A Star Is Born". I call it that because like the movie, the game has been remade more than once, three times for A Star Is Born and two-times for Star Fox, plus they both have star in the name.
Miyamoto just (~last week) stated that he will not make a new F-Zero unless he has new stuff to put in.Think its the same with Starfox.Pretty sad because i think that the Wiiucontroller would perfectly serve as a "window" out of the R-wing.Or you could draw a path on the screen that will serve as a rail the R-Wing follows so can concentrate on fireing on the enemies.
Well done- I particularly like the simple and clear explanation of the FX chip. O, I saw that you're a school teacher- what subject and grade level do you teach?
Gaming Historian is one of the best gaming channels on UA-cam... Love the content.
FYVE can't agree. dude's lisp is substantially annoying.
Yikes. Grow the fuck up.

A Lisp? I've never heard him have a lisp before.
He does smack his lips, but if you've ever seen an AMSR video, that is common and is prefered.

each time i hear the music of the first level on the SNES i get so psyched! Thos e guitarriffs are too cool
I am kind of surprised no comment was made in the video about the music. As soon as it came on here, I was blown away again by how good it was.

This is what I subscribed for! I'm not big on Star Fox, but your presentation and thoroughness makes each video very fascinating.

Oh
I had the same experience with Chuggaconroy.
That's a shame
This is the best Star Fox documentary great job!! Do a Barrel Roll! lol Love that part in the game

Damn, the puppets they used for the official art are the best ones I've ever seen, their Quality is stunning
First thought when I saw the guy at 4:53 was wow, that fellow played too much Polybius.
I really enjoyed this episode, very well done. I hope part 2 happens ;)
I freaking love starfox on snes. it kicks so much butt.
Awesome Video! I enjoyed the first part of this series! I can't wait for the next episode!
Born in 1980. Loved Thunderbirds
I cant believe slippy is someones fucking fursona

Well I'm a pair of headphones with eyes so fuck you.
Great video. I love these games and still have my original Lylat Wars box proudly on display in my room.

quite possibly my favorite soundtrack tune ever, ever since the game came out, ive never got it out my head. the second game is great too

I was a ahrd core Sega fan back in the days during the "bit wars" but when I played Star fox OMG. Loved it! Still do TBh
Great video norm, always down for some Star Fox. Very informative as always.
Can't wait for part 2. Starfox 2 is right up next to Starfox 64 as my favourite in the series.
I was just at the Inari shrine! Haha I had no idea it inspired this game, that's awesome!

Finally an actual new video! Nice job!
6:59 God damnit why did you have to remind me of bubsy that was one of the worst games I ever played
Matthew Ricco i cant believe you actually played that scam lol xD
Can't wait for Bubsy 3D Remastered!
You must have only ever played top notch games, Bubsy isn't even that bad.

Amazing video.
Thank you for the new vid Norman!
Didn't know that such a secondary franchise had such a huge history

Cool. This even predates Virtua Fighter (true 3D with polygons) and Doom (which isn't true 3D).
Great video mate :) Looking forward to the followup.
OMFG I got goosebumps at that music at 5:48
I absolutely loved this game -- and Pilotwings.
awesome to see a new "gaming historian" video. are you still going to do the legend of zelda documentary?
It should be noted, that music is one of strongest StarFox features, its was so epic badass, so it still receiving remixes even now...

I remember this game being named Star Fox in Germany! could it be, that trademark claim only changed the name in the UK?
The game was later released in Europe as Star Fox
That was because Nintendo were scared that they get copyright claims from StarVox (A German company.)
I mean that that reason was that Star Fox first was called Starwing
There's a wii u teaser in e3 2014 you can is it in the background.
