:o you just gave me a great idea! Just use a lever as a key and when you don’t need to open the base just keep it in your inventory!
Maybe they could do it with a button on stone hidden behind some tall grass.

Quick tip, add water near the dirt block so it turns into a gras block faster (I recommend making a more natural like pond)
The best thing about this is that's it's symmetrical ahhh is appealing to my OCD so much

The good old days playing Minecraft factions and you build your hidden base. Only for it to later be discovered, because someone accidentally discovered it or an xray texture pack/ xray hacks.

a better way to hide the lever is use a stone button that is fairly close to the entrance, blend it with stone and surround it a bit and it is basically invisible

Just to point out, if you are worried that Somebody could find your base because of the exposed lever, then here are some ways.
1. Hide it behind a tree
2. Make a normal looking house obstructing the view of others towards the lever, and have a hole where you could see the lever and interact with it.
3. Simply cover it up with dirt, break the dirt when wanting it to open, open it, patch it back up with dirt, go inside, and flick the lever underground.
4. Do nothing at all.

I built all this and i added a few things to the entry and it looks awesome
Even there's a lever if the other players spawn in far place in the base they won't see it
