My favorite part of this interview was when he talked about the importance of enjoying the process while learning a new language, because when you are enjoying it the process becomes way easier, so I’ll keep going further knowing that every day I’ll get better!
That’s very true, because it’s naturally easy to learn languages that are enjoyable, so it’s very important to only choose pretty languages with mostly pretty words, as pretty words naturally bring a lot of joy to the eye / ear and a naturally motivating! I highly recommend learning English 2gether with Dutch / Icelandic + Norse / Norwegian as they are the prettiest and most refined and most poetic languages ever, and all other Germanic languages are also gorgeous, so they are all a great option, and also Welsh / Breton etc and the other 4 modern Celtic languages, and there are a lot more, honestly, but I am learning them all, and learning 15+ languages at the moment! I am writer level in English and upper advanced level in Dutch and intermediate level Icelandic / Norse / Welsh and advanced level in Norwegian, and the learning process is always a lot of fun!
By the way, my current levels are... - intermediate level in Old Norse / Icelandic / Welsh - writer level in English + native speaker level in Spanish - upper advanced level in Dutch + advanced level in Norwegian - mid intermediate level in German / Swedish / Portuguese / French / Italian - beginner level in Breton / Hungarian / Gothic / Latin / Faroese / Galician / Danish / Slovene - total beginner in Cornish / Manx / Irish / Scottish Gaelic / Aranese / Elfdalian / Gallo / Limburgish / Occitan / Luxembourgish / Catalan / East Norse / Ripuarian / Swiss German / Alemanic / Austrian German / PlatDeitsch / Greenlandic Norse / Friulian / Pretarolo / Sardinian / Neapolitan / Sicilian / Venetian / Esperanto / Walloon / Ladin / Guernsey / Norn / Burgundian / West Frisian / North Frisian / East Frisian / Finnish / Latvian / Estonian etc (and the other languages based on Dutch / German / Norwegian / Italian / French that are referred to as ‘dialects’ but are usually a different language with different spelling etc)
Excellent interview. I totally agree with Steve. I learned Portuguese from listening to Brazilian shows and podcasts everyday for about 2 hours, no grammar. About two years later, I visited Brazil and I thought I got enough language to "survive". I was very surprised when I started speaking with locals and they understood me! I felt so happy!! All that passive learning got transformed into active communication. Language learners, keep "consuming" the language of your interest. Eventually it will come out more naturally.
Hi Jennifer! Thanks a lot, Steve, for the awesome tips for learning English, and thanks to Jennifer for the excellent questions! Steve gave us students with his “pep talk” a lot of encouragement not to be afraid of mistakes, to have a good motivation, and to put in time to learn more. As for me when it comes to learning English, I tick most of the boxes as I have good motivation, I am not afraid of making mistakes, and I study regularly. The foundation is solid! Speaking English is especially difficult, and I make mistakes mostly then, but like Steve said: that doesn't matter, just keep on trying!
Steve Kauffman’s ability of becoming a wonderful polyglot is something that not everyone’s cup of tea but it also means that other people also acquires that skill if one can have that desire of learning without feeling of failure and guilt. Just keeping important things in mind are Acceptance of mistakes, true enthusiasm, confidence and strong desire and enjoying the entire process of learning in an elaborate way. I respect Steve Kauffman and his patience and dedication.
Dear Mr. Kaufmann. The key thing for me, whenever I listen to you, is sincerity. I watched plenty of videos with dozens of different pieces of advice and your openness seems to be # 1. And the interviewer was delicate and intelligent. Thanks for both and Merry Christmas.
Thank you Steve! Thank you Janiffer for inviting such an amazing guest. You both contribute the process of mastering the language by enjoying the process and encouraging us to move forward. If not your support, I would have gave up already. Thank you from the bottom of my heart once again!
Thank so much the interview was very impressive and crucial Let's keep confident, attitudes, and accept mistakes as part of the learning process 🎉❤ Thanks alot both of you
Hello everyone! I am currently learning English and a teacher said that we should study studiously the grammar and make sentences with each topic we're studying about and then speak them loudly and repeat. What do you about this method, do you think it is useful? Hope someone can give me an opinion!😊❤
This method is fundamental to learning any language. You’ll be able to form correct sentences automatically and will never forget it. It’s, also, crucial to focus on learning oral comprehension right from the beginning. It’s the hardest part in any language.
This man is good enough, to help give other people the motivation to study English to understand better every day more and more. I like this language, the music for me is the best.
My favorite part of the interview is when he talks about to enjoy the learning process and we should have to put a great amount of emphasis on listening and reading to get confidence.
Wow , that was the amazing podcast with great polyglot. I learned so many new things from him . Thank you JforrestEnglish. I am from India, where english is considered a class
After watching this video I get motivated.. yesterday my confidence went down since I was little bit stuck while speaking in English. Perfect timing of watching this amazing and wonderful video.. Thank you so much..
Thanks for sharing information from a polyglot person. Learning a language is an ongoing process I use to forgetting words in a while and restoring it building sentences and connecting with my own experiences. They installed magically the come up while I am sending voice notes to my buddies. Thanks for sharing tips. I will not be ashamed !!
hi Jennifer thank you for your video I always try to listen to it in my daily free time. I learned English and Chinese and I'm trying not to forget them but it's still a long way to say it fluently. thank you Steve for your great tips!!! 🎉😊
Two simple points : 1) You need a real curiosity, interest for what you study ; 2) You need time to "digest" whatever you study. Speed, being faster is a madness of nowadays.
Very inspiring. Thanks for all the advice. Now, the hardest part is putting it into practice 😎🫢 I love your channel. Thank you for all the work you do.
16:20 When you already feel you know a language but you are not fluent: hire a good professional native philologist with also good knowledge of your own language and spend one or two hours a week talking to them, reading press articles aloud and making a speech as complex and long as you can, your tutor will correct your mistakes at the end of your speech and at the end of one year you will be fluent without major mistakes. Good health and luck to you.
Thank you Steve for the helpful tips you gave to us in this interview and they are very useful to on learning any language. Thank you so much for sharing this interview with Steve wich is very interesting to keep learning and practicing with motivation.
Thanks, Steve you are an awesome polyglot I liked your way of learning languages I think learning a language fluency doesn't come with repeating things translated in your head in your native language when you speak fluency comes when you understand deeply and getting many examples of different native speakers the same things whatever that is you are learning then you own the language not to speak first speaking is the result when you understand first that is called learning language as first language, not to learning as second language and second things to learning languages "naturally varied review" learning traditional way is just waiting our time thanks.
Thank you Steve! - May I asked you one short question? - In case you are talking at one time to two persons of different native languages (that YOU do speak both) - but when these persons only talk THEIR native tongue. - How do you manage to switch over from one language to the other?
