Hello from NYC. I am retired from the NYPD, and I can tell you that the 642 S&W was never authorized as an off duty carry weapon for the NYPD. In fact, the NYPD has phased out .38 special revolvers all together years ago, with a few "old timers" being grandfathered in. When I came on the job in 1985, the choice of off duty revolvers was the S&W model 36, and its shrouded hammer counterpart or the snub nose version of the S&W model #10. Some officers opted for the Colt Detective special, but we were discouraged from buying them by our range officers, as they were prone to timing issues. The Ruger five shot revolver was later authorized when the department switched from blued and black parkerized revolvers to stainless steel. I switched out my S&W model #10 service revolver for a Glock model 19 in 1992. Also, here in N.Y.C. anyone who isn't prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a criminal conviction, or other issues, can be issued an unrestricted carry permit. This is due to a recent Supreme Court decision.

When I was a cop in Australia in the 1980s we carried S&W Model 10 revolvers with the heavy barrel. Very reliable weapons. We also had 38 Special +P hollow points, and carried two speed loaders. We went to Glock 19s, but in the late 1990s.
Following the Bruen decision in June, 2022, NY immediately implemented a new, restrictive law, making it just as impossible to get a concealed carry permit in NYC. That law is being challenged in court now.
I live in Arizona, no permit for concealed carry necessary. My wife is a dispatcher for the Sheriff's office and law enforcement supports that right. I've been shooting since I was a teenager. Back then there were shooting clubs in high school, mostly low caliber long guns and shotguns. People had gun racks on the back windshield of their pickups. Never heard of a mass shooting in my youth even though firearms were prevalent.I legally transported firearms on a commercial airliner when I inherited my father's guns. People seem frightened now, they want the government to make them feel secure, even to the point of giving up their freedoms.
"Human nature is full of riddles, and one of these riddles is this: How is it that people who have been crushed by the sheer weight of slavery and cast to the bottom of the pit can nevertheless find strength to rise up and free themselves, first in spirit then in body, while those who soar unhampered over the peaks of freedom suddenly appear to lose the taste for freedom, lose the will to defend it, and hopelessly confused and lost almost begin to crave slavery?" - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
I remember that era fondly. Children were able to shoot .22 cal rifles at traveling amusement shows and no one was harmed, Sears in Chicago sold firearms. People were more conscious of their behavior and how they would be perceived by a much more religiously grounded society.
the US is in that funny situation where guns are are extremely prevalent and any attempt to disarm just pushes firearms into the hands of criminals and the black market.

Fun Fact: “45 ACP” is a misnomer for the .45 Auto cartridge. “ACP” is an acronym for “Automatic Colt Pistol” which describes the series of Colt pistols that were designed to accept this cartridge and others, not the cartridge itself. Therefore, the appropriate designation is .45 Auto which helped distinguish the bullet from earlier calibers such as .45 Long Colt. Trump’s EDC (Everyday Carry) could really be anywhere but, for that little .38 Special, I’d guess either IWB (In Waist Band) or an ankle rig. A shoulder holster can somewhat visible through a jacket and it’s a bit obsolete with more comfortable options available. For my own EDC, I go with a mid band or belly band that sits above the waist and it’s very hard to see if visible at all and my Glock 19 is bigger than that little 642. He could also just have it in his pocket as you can fire revolvers out of a pocket or purse without worrying about jamming such as with semi-automatics.
Jesse James did a show years ago where he made 2 1911 custom handguns for Trump. He claimed in the show that he was waiting until Trump was out of office to gift them. Any firearms gifts to a sitting president are kept in a museum of the president forever. Trump out of office it's just a personal gift
Not a museum, but they gifts like that to presidents are kept by the government in a secure location. I’ve been there and there’s some interesting stuff.
As a Marine Corps Veteran, living in Indiana, I proudly carry my sidearm with me without license or permit because Indiana recognizes Constitutional Carry, AKA permitless carry.
same here in Washington state. as long as its visible its legal. you can walk around with an AR on your back. you only need a permit if you want to conceal it.
He seems like a pocket carry kind of guy. You can get holsters that will fit into a pocket. Also, the primary reason for the long heavy triggers on snubnoses is to prevent things in the pocket from pulling the trigger, which reduces the need for a holster.
Not nessarly so, the long heavier trigger pull has another concept in that it lets you have that moment of reconsideration if needed. If you fire a S&W double action Airweight you will be surprised just how light the trigger pull is. If in a stressful situation you set it on single action mode it could be easily and non intentional to have it fire. The long ,harder trigger makes you intentionally pull on it to have it fire besides, the snub nose revolver is for up close personal protection not target practice so the S&W 642 is perfect pocket protection. I know I qualified with one .
Revolvers have long heavy triggers because that's just how the lockwork works. Yes, cocking the hammer if the revolver has a hammer spur will give a lighter pull but firing double-action is what's recommended for self-defense. J-Frame triggers are notoriously heavier because they have to use a stiffer coil spring because of their small size instead of a long leaf spring like medium- and large-frame revolvers. I put a spring kit on my S&W 642 but it's still at least a ten pound pull.
You’re crazy to carry without a holster covering the entire trigger guard and you’re even crazier if you carry unholstered with anything else in the same pocket. A negligent discharge just waiting to happen.
For the non US viewers, a majority of states(29 of 50) in the US have no licensing requirement to carry a handgun. As long as you are not legally prohibited from possessing a gun then you can legally carry a handgun.

I've owned two SACM 1935A pistols (both of which I have sold). Rare little pistol, almost a Sig P210 in miniature. And I once carried a 1944 Tokarev: no safety, no blueing (because Stalin was in a hurry).
I never owned a gun until I moved to California and was robbed on a nice side of town, then had two work associates go through the same thing. I would doubt Trump holsters his gun everywhere now, but no doubt he did before he was elected President, I know I would if I could in New York.
Newsflash in every state you can own a tank. They are no more regulated then cars. The only difference is the price for one isn't cheap nor getting insurance. Next no state allows a person to own a bazooka nor a grenade launcher.
Most people here in the U.S. own a weapon, NYC and Chicago are unusual in their restrictive laws. It’s not really a big deal to see people buying guns in everyday stores.
*Absolutely false.* The statistics tell us that most US citizens (at least two thirds of them) DO NOT own a gun. Not even half live in a household where there is a firearm. Even in the US, gun owners remain the exception.
*A reader added the following correction and context to the incorrect comment by @invictus84:* "WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Thirty-two percent of U.S. adults say they personally own a gun, while a larger percentage, 44%, report living in a gun household. Adults living in gun households include those with a gun in their home or anywhere on their property. Gallup has tracked both metrics of gun ownership annually since 2007, showing no clear increase or decrease in gun ownership over that time." (From Gallup News)
Most every day stores don't sell them anymore. Or at least not anything past a pellet gun. You used to be able to buy firearms in most Walmarts for instance. Not anymore
Only about 30% of US ppl own guns. They own on average 3.5 guns, thus slightly more guns than ppl. Gun ownership is minority in US as it's a privilege and not a right.
Maybe 20+ years ago but plenty of stores no longer sell even shotguns or ammo. Which is bizarre because movies like John Wick are wildly popular but guns remain taboo with so many people on the political left. But that is slowly changing.
Since Oliver Winchester presented Abraham Lincoln with a Henry 1860 rifle (serial no.6), many Presidents owned Winchester repeating rifles. These include Teddy Roosevelt's Winchester models of 1876 and 1895 (part of his massive collection of around 100 guns). Presidents Truman and Eisenhower both used Winchester 1894s. Reagan would also be presented with a Winchester 64.

That licenses shouldn't be a thing. All license involving the 2nd Amendment are a restriction, a infringement upon the 2nd Amendment. They are unconstitutional because they are stating you must have permission to uphold your constitutional right to keep and bare arms.

I think it's what's known as deep-carry shoulder holster. He's wearing it under an always-white dress shirt. These types of holsters are usually white in color and can't be seen under a white shirt. Some have clips that attach to the user's underwear waistband to hold everything in place for smooth draw. The holster and gun are accessible though the shirt with 2 or 3 buttons unbuttoned and hidden by his tie. Small revolvers like the 642 are often used with this type of holster. They were used by the Secret Service in the 1960s and 70s. If we ever see him with his tie out of the way and a partly unbuttoned shirt, that's where his gun is.

"Human nature is full of riddles, and one of these riddles is this: How is it that people who have been crushed by the sheer weight of slavery and cast to the bottom of the pit can nevertheless find strength to rise up and free themselves, first in spirit then in body, while those who soar unhampered over the peaks of freedom suddenly appear to lose the taste for freedom, lose the will to defend it, and hopelessly confused and lost almost begin to crave slavery?"

Such a cool gun. The full rail on a longslide is awesome.
Not a museum, but they gifts like that to presidents are kept by the government in a secure location. I’ve been there and there’s some interesting stuff.
One of the first presidents was gifted a beautiful custom made matched pair of flintlock pistols. Worth a fortune today.

that's a very sweet 20 you got right there young man!
@@MikePluto I have carried my 642 unholstered in a large jacket pocket, However, YES it is the ONLY thing IN said pocket.

"WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Thirty-two percent of U.S. adults say they personally own a gun, while a larger percentage, 44%, report living in a gun household. Adults living in gun households include those with a gun in their home or anywhere on their property.
Gallup has tracked both metrics of gun ownership annually since 2007, showing no clear increase or decrease in gun ownership over that time."

Only about 30% of US ppl own guns. They own on average 3.5 guns, thus slightly more guns than ppl. Gun ownership is minority in US as it's a privilege and not a right.

I carry every day, and no one knows. I carry a Sig P365 IWB at one o'clock, or an LCP in a pocket holster. I have carried a full sized M&P with no one the wiser.
