Ok, I came here to learn a bit about the D6 system since there is now a D6 2E Kickstarter running, but I was surprised to hear of your involvement with Supers! REd (my 2nd favourite Supers RPG) and then right after that, Capitaine Quebec...One of my best friends was the manager of the CQ store in DDO. It's neat to hear the name again all these years later.

I applaud your DIY journey. I’m not a superhero RPG player myself, but the Fantasy portion of your story resonates. As a GM I value cinematic games where the rules take trunk space with my back seat full of story/conflict options and my driver seat full of eager Players and their characters. I cut my teeth on D100 games but wanted a smoother, simpler, core-mechanic centered game. D6 scratched the itch. I now GM and play a home brew variant of Mini-6 and WEG and couldn’t be happier. As a side bonus I watch with sadness as my WotC brothers and sisters mourn the seeming demise of OGL 1.0, but deep down I can’t help feel fortuitously lucky I play D6-I got no burn marks from that raging dumpster fire. Carry on, mate! May all your WD roll “6”!

Dude. My brother in RPGs. This is so me. I still have ALL of my original Star Wars d6 books, AND the WEG "D6" boxed set (Fantasy, Modern, and Space). It is my favorite core system. But good luck convincing anyone to play it. Sad panda.
And the various hacks out there! So many, and all so flavorful, such as "Buffy d6".
I also dislike pre-determined "classes" and Star Wars d6 did such a good job of presenting "archetypes" as a basic template to play as-is, or tweak to make it your own. Flexible. Simple. Brilliant.

D6 is really a great system because it is very simple yet very deep at the same time and incredibly versatile. I don't know of another game like it really and I don't understand why it isn't more popular. The only thing I didn't like about it was the fact that I couldn't find a good magic system, but I was able to cobble a pretty decent one together myself.

I know what you mean about the Magic Systems in the various D6 games. They all seem a bit convoluted or wonky. Each version of the game does it differently, and none do it well.
For me, Mini-6 Bare Bones (which is free) has one of the easiest, but also poorly done magic systems. Magic needs to be an extra perk you buy at character creation, but from then on is just another skill you can have for the Wit attribute. However, the penalty to miss a spell cast attempt is -1D for the skill until you get an hour of rest to remove all penalties. That is too steep. I changed it to either be -1 pip to the magic skill, or to -1D whenever you attempt that spell and leave all other spells unaffected (unless you miss a spell cast skill check for another spell, so each is -1D).
I also think the GM needs more control over the difficulty numbers. The GM could even change the difficulty for attempting the exact same thing twice. AKA using telekinesis to lift a drawbridge of a castle is moderate target number (TN15) one day, but at midnight you try again only to find out the Target Number is now 25. Because magic is unknowable and eldritch. Or the GM needs the drawbridge to stay down for his scenario to work.

    • @Kytross

I built a "rare, high magic fantasy" with D6. Some of it is posted on the forums over at Rancor Pit.
Using the standard size attributes from SWD6 I added 2 more, Casting and Channeling. Casting determines your success with a spell, channeling determines the spell's power/damage. Individual spells are learned like advanced skills under the Casting attribute.
This sets up a system that keeps individual mages balanced with melee fighters for power, usually a bit weaker. Casting a spell by yourself automatically invokes multiple action penalties. Casting as a group allows one player to cast while other players channel. It allows for some very powerful magic to be done, but keeps magic rare.
There's a lot more to it, but I'll keep it short and end there.
Also did a quick and dirty Star Trek D6 you can find over at Rancor Pit

One issue with Mini Six in particular is that the 12D you start with in your attributes makes the character feel superpowered, especially when you add the maximum 2D in a skill at character creation. If I create a dwarven warrior I'll give him (or her) Might 4D and Axes 2D so when making attacks with the axe, I roll 6D. The average result of that is, what, 20-21? Most monster's Parry is nowhere near that high!
I might limit characters to 10D for attributes at character creation, but we'll see.

Hey, love this review. Wish there were more videos on the D6 System. I have massive trouble reading "rules" from a book and have to always ask a million questions, because everything appears ambiguous to me when reading. I guess that is some kind undiagnosed reading disability or something. Don't know. But videos on the topic always help me.
You said that you use the standard D6 and MiniSix. Is it to complement the MiniSix rulebook for more specific things? I have the D6 Space rulebook, because I like more of a Cyberpunk, Scifi-Setting. Can I assume that D6 Space has everything the standard book has or would you recommend getting Starwars REUP (revised, expanded updated) or maybe even Septimus for the most up to date and granular rules? 🙂I know it's an involved question again, like I mentioned before :D

I'm a huge fan of Mini-6 Bare Bones. However, you're right that it needs some work. The main one for me is the magic system. I changed the penalty from -1D6 per failed spell check roll to -1D6 to further attempts to cast that same spell. Other spells are unaffected. The second thing is to ignore the target numbers of the spells. Let the GM set that as needed. Even consecutive uses of the same spell can be different target numbers. Why? Because magic is mystical and ever changing. Or just that the GM needs the gameplay to not mess up his campaign tonight, so that spell that was easy is now very hard.
One more thing I added was changing the Star Paladin "spell" called Sense Danger. In my version Sense Danger has the effect of turning your plasma sword into 75% cover when active, and you are concentrating, with a target number to cast based on numbers of enemies of 5 per enemy. If you roll an 11, then you are in cover vs 2 enemies. Get a 15, then three baddies need to shoot you as if you were in 75% (aka +10) cover difficult.. Yes, this means its only useful against ranged attacks, but so be it. When it comes time to sword fight, it is skill vs skill, though using your powers to aid you in other ways is always a possibility. Also, your really can only fail that spell if your roll was a 1-4. If you roll a 5, you are protected, though only against one enemy. If your facing 3 enemy troopers shooting at you, you may want to actually seek real cover, or drop your concentration and try again to get a 15. At least this combat spell is unlikely to ever induce a spell failure penalty this way, and that is by design.
I also love the Dueling Blades rules from Griffon Publishing for lightsaber fights. It makes it much more cinematic. Instead of hit/miss, now you a single opposed roll per round (no initiative needed), and your margin of success can result in 1 of 4 outcomes for the winner. 1-You push your enemy backwards in a direction you choose, 2-you stun them, 3-you wound them, 4-or you get a GM determined critical hit (aka severed hand, destroyed weapon, blinded in one eye, your pants fall down, etc.). It is really fun.

What are your thoughts on Open Legend? Believe it or not, my first RPG I ever ran was minisix and it was a campaign. I started to get overwhelmed trying to create mechanics for everything the players wanted to do, like creating werewolves for a player character who took over an NPC after theirs died and I didn't have any player side rules for that. The stress of balancing everything got to be too much. Loved the system though, it's size made it a plausible entry point for someone with social anxiety to not be overwhelmed from day one.
Open Legend kind of felt to me like it drew a lot of inspiration from the D6 system, Fate, and of course DnD. I decided it was still rules light enough to not overwhelm me but had enough 'do anything' mechanics to make so I didn't need to homebrew so much. It is sad to see it as also kind of defunct now.

    • @fanfywriter8727
      @fanfywriter8727 Рік тому +1

@@bearthegenxgm I'll try my best! But first you can read the rules free online on their website, the pdf and hardcopy are minorly out of date due to the new ownership not having access to the original files and having to rebuild the pdf and book from scratch. I own the hardcopy. I believe it is only 1 boon that has officially been replaced and there isn't any other large changes currently.
I would say the main takeaways are that it separates 'how' an action is done from it's effects, so that players can RP what their character is doing; whether a spell or a weapon or superpowers or what have you, through it's banes and boons system. I don't know if they were the first to do something like that but it was the first encounter of banes and boons that I had.
So for example whether you are casting a spell to entangle someones feet, throwing senbon needles at their nerves, or lasso'ing them with a rope, those actions would 'invoke' the "immobile" bane on a target.
The system also has all die explode. Advantage and disadvantage. And a 'fail but the story progresses rule' to try and make all rolls matter. Classless system.
Players really create whatever abilities they want their characters to have. This was the same approach we used in my mini six campaign where one player had a jerryrig skill. It is definitely balanced towards a super powered style of game like DnD or something with superheroes, trying to do a 'regular people' type campaign with it was a little bit off but not too bad.
I honestly think it would be better to introduce new players to a system with less creative freedom than Open Legend and move to it after the fact just because of how much 'player cooperation' you need given how much freedom player's have over flavor; they can mechanically be able to do something that their own character flavor doesn't actually allow them to do.
That being said it's 'how you do it' agnostic design creates a very rules lite and versatile system. My biggest gripe was honestly that because dice can explode infinitely and all dice explode - you sometimes got absurd runaway numbers in VTT's like 105 that there was no way to satisfyingly describe an outcome for; like killing a filler monster. In person a lot of people homebrew explosion limits and dice limits to avoid excessive rolling. But for some people all that rolling and exploding is a big part of the fun. Being a VTT only gm, I don't get the full experience there.
Also, disclosure, I haven't run any ttrpg in 2 years and am just starting to get back into it. Probably going to use open legend most likely. Unless I ran a regular people game again, in which case I would probably do minisix again; just with no werewolves this time :)

Yes! The D6 System book you showed is a WONDERFUL source of brain food for using the system for whatever you want! Back in the 1990s I used it to fashion my own fantasy game based on AD&D. Some playtests to work out any bugs I might have missed and then I was off to the races with it!
I ran a multi-year fantasy game with 6+ players and had a BLAST! All using the D6 System. I never took to the "D6 Fantasy" book when it came out, as I already had a D6 based fantasy game I had been running for YEARS.
Like you, I had different magic forms, from the spell casters akin to AD&D, to more of a conjuration system where the conjuror fashions their own magic from the power they draw from the planet. Even my clerics and druids used a different form for their "prayers", where they gain their abilities from a deity they pray to.
I am still using my fantasy rules for the D6 System to this day, as I am running a one player game with my wife using the system, building upon the character she previously played some 20 years ago with our group. I have even added a new magic system, one the taps into the magical power trapped within the brilliant luminescence of gem stones. Gem Magic! Different gems grant different spells, and the power of the spell is scalable based on the refinement of the gem stone!
That being said, Mini Six and many other OpenD6 products that came out are neat to read over and potentially mine for other ideas.

Hello, fellow Canuck! Whenever I design a game, it's always the WEGD6 system that is the root. However, I always hated the addition!

Seems like ICRPG is the d20 equivalent of this spirit. With few moving parts and many examples of how you can adjust and create your rules of choice.

I've got Mythic D6 which I understand is based on Open D6. Then I've also played HERO System 5rev and 6. Then I also played GURPS 4e as well.

I'm a bit of a newcomer to D6. I mostly dabble in other systems but the key componet to me is easy to run, not alot of crunch. Like I am a big fan of Kingdom Hearts and I want to make a campaign set in that world and given how each world (being based on various Disney properties though in my case I'd also be using non-Disney worlds) is radically different from the next I need a system that's versatile enough while having a solid foundation.
Course what also drew me to D6 is obviously, Star Wars because yeah, I love me some Star Wars.
