  • MV Naomh Éanna is a decommissioned ferry which historically operated as the primary connection on the Galway to Aran Islands route for Córas Iompair Éireann replacing the SS Dun Aengus. In August 1958, three months after entering service, she was among the ships to respond to the loss of KLM Flight 607-E.
The Naomh Éanna sailed for 30 years, but was taken out of action in 1986. It had a second life as a business premises, but now lies in Grand Canal Dock in Dublin, awaiting scrappage.
In February 2014 she was moved by Waterways Ireland to the Grand Canal Docks' graving dock for deconstruction, but the break-up was postponed due to public opposition and eventually dropped as a plan materialized to convert her to a tourist attraction in her original home port of Galway.
In 2014, she was the subject of a TV documentary directed by Donncha Mac Con Iomaire on Tg4
As of 2018, she has been proposed to be converted into a five-star hotel on the River Liffey. The conversion plan never came to fruition and as of summer 2021 the ship remained in a deteriorated state. On January 18, 2023, whilst at Dublin Docks, she capsized.

Brilliant work and history Mick.thanks.🙏💙. Really a terrible shame.. government seems to have endless funds available for all " Euro projects" and "saving the world " from itself stunts.. while failing our own people and heritage..☹️

I think it would make a nice centre piece somewhere, but it's not looking good.
      Thanks for watching 👍👍

The Naomh Eanna was very much a part of my childhood in Galway where I was incarcerated in St. Joseph's CBS Industrial School...1959-1966. Our Sunday walks occasionally took us to The Docks where we'd see the ship preparing to sail to the Aran Islands. To see her now in this state saddens me and reflects a country's contempt for history in its mad rush to modernity. I sailed her once. What would John Masefield say?

I have one of the dorade vents off this, found it magnet fishing last year where the ship use to be docked, had it sand blasted and powder coated in off white and it sits in my sitting room as a fascinating part of history.

Great video - the opening shot with you talking looked like you had some kool effect on the camera - like in the filims!
..yeh, such a pity though the boat, with all of its history, has ended up in that condition
    Thanks for the video ;o,

I remember it well, having worked on it for the Liffey Dockyard Company, as a young Fitter in the bowels of its engine room, back in 1966.....sad to see it end up like this..

Thank you very much for that, I love to hear of anyone enjoying the videos or channel so thank you.
I would love to see it as a centre piece somewhere, out of the water, be no need to do inside it, or perhaps like in a dry Dock like the one in Belfast, but I think they'll scrapp it. Better off as a reef.

Same here. I got some photos I included in the video, I thought I did have some video footage but tunes out I didn't.
I hope they do something with it but don't have much hope. The area where it is could be great for a cafe ,bubs etc with it as a centre point ,but very unlikely

Shame to see , but despite all the cry's of it should be saved no one seems to want to get their money out their pockets , the Nomadic cost about aight million to restore unfortunately the expense of these projects is enormous and need a sound business' plan to attract any investment..
