HoH … your videos on the vintage Porsche Design watches are the tops. Probably the most informative videos I have watched on these time pieces … and my first tip off to the Dan Henry collection. I acquired the 1972 Maverick in silver (the black was already sold out, bummer) and recently got the black automatic version of the Maverick. It is a great watch and if anyone is hesitating, just go ahead and buy one. Thanks again for the video.
Thanks for reviewing the new re-release 1972 Chronograph. I own the Dan Henry "Alpha" version. The other new DH 1972 Automatic (non-chrono) offering is intriguing... it reminds me of the non-chrono version Orfina PD (7050) released alongside the Chronograph 1 - just scaled up in size (the 7050 was a strange 30mm, but wears like a 34mm. Sort of in between mens and womens watch sizes of the time). I own 2 of those, but always wish it was offered in 36-38mm.
Good call Bryan. The new edition with the internal tunring bezel certainly takes the design in a new direction as well. I might ask Dan to lend me one to review against the original 7050. In fact, I'm going to ask! Best, D
A must have for me this year, the current model is better no doubt. This and a Vero Workhorse and SW-Q are on my list for watches to buy and wear this year, although finding the wrist time might be tough because I love wearing my Casio MRW-200h during the week as my primary beater/work watch.
So glad you enjoyed it. And thank you so much for taking the time to share the kind words. Sinn makes an amazing watch. I myself am leaning away from Lemania 5100 movements due to service costs and parts availability. Probably going to do a video about it soon. If you want to look at some watches together for vetting/advice, hit me up on IG. All the best, D
I just wish the hands and the hr plots were patinaed.... that contrast is what makes the homage worth it to me.....that contrast is amazing! Pretty certain i can get the hands patinaed aftermarket but sadly i think getting the hour markers patinaed would be difficult as it is a sandwich dial.
I've never heard of modding one of Dan's watches. Is that a thing? I'm inclined to recommend against it. Are you contemplating a part swap between and alpha and bravo edition? That'd be kind of rad.
Hello there. In my opinion if you decided to patina I will just do the hands first maybe with that you are happy and dont need to touch the sandwich. But you are going to loose lume power if that doesnt bother you.
I bought the first 1972, or the 'A' as you call it. The minute sub dial now fails to reset to 0, and there is no corrective fix in the Miyota instructions for this. Not too good really. Never cared for the alarm which was very faint. Version 'B' actually has a different movement and no alarm, so I then bought this version. Unfortunately it arrived perfectly packed but with the crown wheel broken off. Also, the crown on both watches is a bit sharp to the touch. Got a refund from DH no problem but maybe there is a quality control issue? Pity as I still love the look of both watches.
Sorry to hear both of those didn't perform for you. Even TGV had to return his "A" for a movement issue. My day/date changes late but I accept it as the nature of entry level movements and such. Next step up would be a LeJour if you're looking to get the "look" but the PD's are creeping up past 4k.
Have you seen the brew metric black pvd? A different aproach but obviously also reminds the porshe design. What do you thing in terms of quality between the dan henry 1972 and the metric? Both of them looks great to me, each one with it's own way... still undecided wich one to get
Thank you for reaching out! I am aware of the brand but wasn't aware of this model. I myself am not drawng to square-ish, "TV screen" type case designs tho I respect the Brew ethos in general. I've never held one so can't weigh in on the build or function quality. The DanHenry is a tribute to the original PD. The Metric is Brew's take on watches from a period carrying the all black aesthetic. And after you discern build quality, but even more important, which aesthetic appeals to YOU. The build quality of both will be less than the original PD but in any likelihood close enough to one another. Let me know what you go with!! Cheers, D
I got the Dan henry orginal i'd always thought that it would've been better without the alarm and adding a day to it but now I'm glad I have that alarm function one if it ever fails me I'll get the new one but the OG is pretty bad ass and looks more like the original but with its own originality, with the extra hand and button
hello and thanks for stopping by! I think that is well summed up and mirrors my feelings towards the original. I too am glad I have both as I see them as part of the PD story and legacy. All the best, D
@@HobbyOfHours perhaps I got a dud band. I used a link removal tool kit, the link pin requires a lot of force to budge. It comes out half way with the link removal tool, since the rod that pushes the pin isn’t long enough to get it all the way out I tried to pull it with pliers but it won’t budge. Also tried a small nail and hammer to tap it through. My pins are just way too tight to remove. My experience with my other Dan Henry watch (1964 chrono) was much easier. I used the same tool to push the pins out half way and then just pulled them out with my fingers.
@@benthorn6445 That is definitely odd. My suggestion....take the bracelet off the watch and run it under the sink, very hot water. then try again. If that doesn't work *usually* your bathtub faucet will produce higher temperature water, sometimes as high as 120 degrees (mine does that is). Run it under that to heat up the metal. Using gloves, move/massage the bracelet links to get the heat distributing. Careful not to lose any parts in the tub if you've got one pin half way out. Let me know how it goes! D
Hi there. Nice watch review! I used to have the Alpha version and now I have an orfina valjoux7750 but the case was polished so i'm wondering maybe you know. If there any chance to put a valjoux inside one of the dan henry case maybe the bravo? Because i can find an used orfina case for 7750
Hello Ariel! Thanks for stopping by and the kind words. If you have an original Orfina with the 7750 you won't want to go the route you've suggested. You'll want to either A. Find a replacement case (challenging, 675.00 and up) or B. Have the case restored. There is a company that is restoring the original PD's via the same method of powder coating. The cost of a full service and recoat as we'll call it is $1,250.00 plus shipping to/fro and they are based in the USA. I don't *believe* they will do a recoat without a service but you can always ask. Superior Watch Service Inc. www.superiorwatch.com All the best, D
@@HobbyOfHours hey thanks for the response I havent see the notification, unfortunately that usa company is not an option for me because I live in argentina and it is quite expensive, I will try to do something here, anyway I'm also missing the pushers crown and bezel too. and its hard to find and there are some of lemania and other even the seller doesnt know if they are for 7750. I know that it should be a non screwdown crown just a press one. Do you know or could you check at least the diameter dimension of a valjoux crown? I think pushers and crown are the same size like 5 mm.
Hello! It's not the outer dimensions of the crown that matter, it's the inner workings and the portion inside the crown that connects to the crown stem. On the surface they appear the same. The only other place that can get you all of those parts is Orfina in Switzerland. I have not seen a 7750 crown show up on ebay. The pushers may be interchangeable from lemania to valjoux but since I've never done that I don't know. Hopeit works out for you! Best, D@@arielin82
Great to see the tribute pieces side by side by side with an original in that final wrist shot. Ridiculously impractical as wearing 3 at a time is. Surprised at no video of running chrono on the bravo though. Is it 1 tick per second like the alpha, or does the different movement have multi-tick chrono hand?
I'm hilariously against the Pasadena, but not because it's a bad watch. It's likely a great "watch." For me I am somehow personally offended Jack ripped off PD on the design. It's not like Butzy was my dad. Cant' figure out why I'm feeling so petty about it LOL. The other more unusual color ways in the Pasadena are more readily available (olive; white dial). I featured in my PD Alternates video, and still own, the Le Jour model which was a licensed Pasadena so other than the so-so bracelet, pretty much the same as a Pasadena. Performs well, sturdy (i was impressed by the build quality). Just a soso bracelet tho. Considering the Heuer Pasadena is at or over the cost of a PD, going with the original is my advice to anyone considering the model, the "look" of these all black 70's chronos.
