Here's the big one. Never done an iceberg video before, but if I'm going to, I'm going all out! As far as I know (and can find,) this is the longest fully edited Mother video on the platform as of its upload date.

Lol, honestly it really is since we've all been asking him for years for a Mother 4, so him asking someone who's game he's a fan of for a sequel is definitely pretty ironic and funny to think that a creator of something we all love can want more content from a creator THEY love too, like idk man it kind of inspires me to make my own project, itd be worth it even if just one person in the entire world enjoys it and wants more from it afterwards, that kind of love for a game/movie/show is just something special in my opinion, and honestly the fact that Mother hasn't gotten a shit ton of sequels/remakes like the Pokemon series just makes those original 3 games that much more special, especially since they haven't been tarnished by lack-luster lazy-ass remakes like the Pokemon series has. {RANT INCOMING ABOUT NINTENDO/PKMN 😭🤣😭:}((seriously, fuck Nintendo for how they treat us Pokemon fans, wether it's not including the classic games on NSO FOR LITERALLY ZERO REAL NON-BS REASONS, to removing mega evolution and replacing it with a much lamer gimmick despite Mega Evolving being the perfect solution to improving old Pokemon that already have a full evolution line or making 1:1 remakes of classic games with ZERO quality of life fixes or even bothering to add Pokemon that came later in the game series like they used to do back when remakes were something special and not just 1:1 the same fucking game but with shitty-looking 3d models instead of the near-perfect pixel art from Gen 4/5 #FuckBrilliantDiamondandShiningPearl and #FuckNintendo for thinking they'd get away with giving us the same exact game from 15+ years ago cuz theres no "official" way to play the originals, but fuck being "official", if you wanna play literally any old Nintendo game just say "No, fuck you." to NSO or the "Expansion Pass" and just download an emulator and some roms. If you got a phone or laptop or hell an old Wii or PS3 you can mod there's zero fucking excuse to deal with Nintendo's BS and pay for a subscription just to play through their old games (and not even have access to the Pokemon games for literally no reason outside of Nintendo wanting us to buy the remakes/the overpriced dlc for the new games that add literally nothing except the old Pokemon they removed for no reason in the first place...just to be able to use our old (fan favorite) Pokemon again.) Fuck you Nintendo, seriously fuck them they're the worst, greediest or atleast most anti-consumer gaming company around right now, and thats really saying something considering how scummy the gaming industry is nowadays, but even then Nintendo is the worst with it since they seem to actively be against giving us fans what we want, which is just y'know a SOUND, FUNCTIONAL fucking game that isn't buggy as hell or lazily made/only made to cash in on Nostalgia. I genuinely, truly hope Nintendo goes under for good during the next console generation and a component company buys up their IPs and actually gives us the bare minimum that we expect and deserve from our favorite franchises, cuz man Nintendo is running itself and every franchise it has into the fucking ground at mach-speed 😭😭😭))

24:42 the people who call EarthBound's sampling techniques "stealing" are the type of people who say hip-hop isn't music. sampling has been a _staple_ of hip-hop since the genre's inception, and as a producer myself, it's so much more difficult than people make it out to be - look up the sample breakdown for Daft Punk's "Face To Face" for an example. (As an aside, "Face To Face" has only had all of its samples discovered as recently as late 2023.) anyway I respect the shit out of EarthBound for this

Being honest, my interest in the MOTHER series kinda started fading away these past months, maybe because I stopped being that involved with the community, stopped conssuming the series content, started focussing on other franchises or other reasons. But thanks to this video I'm rembering why I like this series. Thank you MonkeyNess, I may not be as MOTHER obscessed, but thank you still.

I recently dove into the mother series last month and beat the trinity and now I don’t know what to do with my life. It’s such a masterpiece that it’s hard to feel satisfied playing anything else. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Omori and Undertale is the closest I can think of but they are so popular you might have already played them.
Well, there is another inspired Earthbound game on steam called Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass. It has quirky characters and humor like Earthbound, but can get extremely dark just like in Mother 3. Might wanna check it out.
You can always try out omori if you're looking for something else in the same vein that deals with serious content.

Localization memes aside, i think the MOTHER community should pride itself on its fanmade contributions. Music, ROM hacks, inspired games, animations, amazing art, comics, and the famed M3 translation are products of passion that you dont typically see in fanbases. Im just happy to see fans appriciate the work and take it upon themselves to build upon it rather than rage about what the games lack, like a lot of other gaming fans. Its just so nice, idk
It’s been a long while since I’ve seen any iceberg video. So this was a excellent refresher! Not to mention, seeing my old work here was a pleasant surprise. Gives me a fuzzy feeling inside, such as the texture of a certain vegetable. Keep at it fellow enthusiast!
During Mother 3 I always thought Ionia was like drowning Lucas to force his body to get a fever and awaken his PSI abilities, especially after the game tells the player that sudden fevers indicate latent PSI development
I do enjoy that almost all of the points are about interesting Earthbound trivia instead of wasting time with made-up Creepypasta nonsense.

I really wish we lived in the timeline where Nintendo realized they could have released Mother 3 on the DS. I can't imagine that it'd be hard to bring it over, seeing as the DS has all the necessary hardware to run GBA games. They could've even had stuff like the action being on the top screen, and the map and item menus being on the bottom screen, or vise versa.
While there is a case to be made that the DS Lite was able to run GBA games, porting a game from one system to another is a lot of work, and just not as simple as it seems sadly. Simply making both screens usable would've been a large task to undertake for a game, again, that just wasn't seen as being all that profitable for the company.

Thanks to the NSO, I finally got to play both Earthbound Beginnings and Earthbound (Mother 2) for the first time. I now hold those games so dearly and they're some of my favorite things in the world ever.
When talking about the connections to Kirby, I'm surprised that you didn't mention the ESP ability from Planet Robobot, in which Kirby has psychic powers, wears a hat similar to Ness' and the basic attack controls similarly to PK Flash/Freeze from the Smash games. The pause menu description even mentions Ness indirectly (at least in the Spanish version), and the Ness amiibo gives you ESP when scanned.

Funfact about mother 3:
The idea of the chimera lab where you get chased by the ultimate chimera actually came from another unlocalized game (not anymore since the remake came out) called LIVE A LIVE... there is a chapter where you navigate yourself as cube through a space ship while a hostile behemoth is wandering around the ship and if he touches you, you die instantly like in mother 3 with the ultimate chimera....
The reason why this gimmick is in mother 3 is because a producer of LIVE A LIVE also worked on mother 3..
Ps: Toby fox took inspiration for Megalovania from LIVE A LIVES megalomania....

Excellent video, learned a lot. I would add a few minor additions:
Dunkey's partial play through of Earthbound is frustrating, but later on his short-lived podcast Dunk Tank he, his wife, and his friends all play through and discuss Earthbound in detail, giving it a warm reception.
Another link between the Mother and Kirby series is that Itoi came up with the final title for Kirby Super Star as well as the Japanese box art (designed to look like an expensive wooden gift box).
A lot of great fan projects are mentioned, I'd add to them the Pollyanna animation by SaganYee, which covers the plot of Earthbound as a music video to the vocal version of Pollyanna as well as the channel 綿野レモンT/ WatanoLemonT, which has been putting out animated clips for the Mother games for many years. Both of these creators have made pretty high quality stuff and are worth a watch.

2:48:30 I've been OBSSESED with this render/creature for quite some time. It's horrifying, and I love it for that. It captures perfectly the creepiness of early 64 models. Imagine playing Mario 64 and finding this thing instead of Dory. It would be horrifying, swimming in the waters of HMC, and boom, jumpscared by it. It makes me want it even more

I remember way back then being kinda bummed when I thought the main character is the cowboy guy but it was because he was a grown adult. Earthbound to me was playing a young child who goes off in this big wide world, full of adventure that makes you feel like a kid yourself and remember your childhood. Couldn't feel that kind of thing with a grizzled adult who looks like he's seen it all already.
I was glad to learn that Lucas was the real main character but I didn't know people back then were thinking they were playing Ness again. But I remember seeing a screenshot of the game in a magazine that had a kid who looked like Ness on a skateboard so maybe that's were the thought came from?
Many people speculate that the “Ness” seen in those early screenshots you’re referring to was actually an early version of Lucas or Claus merely designed to resemble Ness, much like how Ness was designed to resemble Ninten from Mother 1, but Itoi confirmed long ago that the Ness-like character seen in those early screenshots was actually only added in temporarily to better visually represent the series in showcases and promotional footage. On the surface, nothing about EB64 actually looked very much like a Mother game at all, so the development team felt the need to better indicate to people that the game they were looking at in various screenshots and footage was indeed a Mother game. In other words, the red cap boy was never intended to appear in the final game, at least not in any major capacity. Ness does technically appear in the final release of the game, in a series of screenshots displayed in a theater in New Pork City, so I do personally think it’s possible that the stand-in red cap boy they used in that EB64 footage actually might have been a legit in-game character model for Ness which was meant to appear elsewhere in the finished version of EarthBound 64. That’s just entirely my own speculation, though.

Thinking back, when I first saw the screenshot it was the very first thing I saw from Mother 64, so I thought Ness might have been in the game even if he wasn't going to be the main character. Then more screenshots came out with Ness no where to be found so I thought the creators changed their minds in putting him in the game.

I’m late to the party, but I have two things I want to say
1, I find it funny how most of these entries are of EarthBound 64
2, MOTHER 3 never got official paper mache models because I suppose those were usually made for NES and SNES, because they have paper mache models for Plok, another SNES game.

I always woundered why earthbound 64 wasnt ported to project dolphin (Gamecube) or the Nintendo DS
Porting is much more work than adjusting some text and controls, it’d be a huge process, just wasn’t that simple sadly.
They would need to completely rework the game, basically starting from scratch
