  • Shining Tor always seems to generate a pile up for me, so I decided it was time for a return visit. This time it was covered in snow!
The last two visits I've done using QRP, so I decided to run a bit more power this time round.
    0:00 Intro
    1:10 2m FM
4:13 Pile up on 2m FM
    4:58 2m setup
    5:30 HF setup
6:08 Big pile up on 20m!
    8:08 Nice run on 40m
    9:22 Conclusion
The Amateur Radio UK channel is run by UK radio amateur M0GQC (James). As the channel name would suggest, the channel focuses primarily on amateur radio within the UK!!!

Bit late to the party, but thanks for including me James! Great video and good to see where you were operating. That prediction came true hah! James M7SDO

Well done James as always and some nice pile ups. I need to do Shining Tor again as I had a failed activation here some time ago. You must have been so pleased to see the motor home after spending three hours on the Summit in that weather. Speak soon. 73 Chris M0RSF

    Excellent stuff James 😊…
The pileups were mad! 2m was unreal!
It looked fairly cold though… you did well to stay up so long… It’s a lot more bearable without wind. 💨

I always enjoy a good pile up!
That brick wall did quite a lot to shelter me from the wind & I also had quite a few layers on to keep me warm.

Brilliant James, sunny snow capped tops are wonderful places, and you demonstrated verticals do not need lots of radials to work really well, as many seem to think, and the guy casually walking through your garden gate, so to speak was a Bute.
Keep up the good work James.
You and Frazer are amongst the top radio you tubers these days, you just get it done.

Thanks Brian. Obviously the vertical will work better with more radials but it's amazing what you can get away with.
I've successfully activated several summits with exactly the same antenna and only one radial!
Clearly a massive compromise but it still worked.
I'm not sure that I can claim to be a "top UA-camr". There are plenty of bigger & more popular channels than mine but I appreciate the attempts to over-inflate my ego!!!

Oh James, that one looks a cold ❄ one. Wise behind the wall. As you know from my last one, I was on the other side getting it all. Nice pile ups mate.

Superb effort once again James. Maybe the extra power helped too along with the location. 73

I've also generated pile ups on QRP from this summit.
I can't draw any definitive conclusions as it is in no way scientific but my gut feeling having run both QRO & QRP from the same location (albeit several months apart under different band conditions) is that the extra power helped on HF but made virtually no difference on VHF.
I'll also note that I had a much more efficient EFHW when I ran HF QRP. This antenna is a compromise, especially on 40m.

So James, i did it this weekend. Making 2 Pota and 1 SOTA Activation with the Slidewinder and a 3 Meter telescopic Whip with Magnetic Holder on top of my car. What should i say, it worked fine. All together 100 QSO"s ... that made my day ;-) 73

I’ve worked S to S from EI SOTA on 2m to Shining Tor,interesting to see what it looks like, even if the weather looks a bit hairy! Dave Ei3ixb

That had a nice wintry feel to it. Well done!
Not sure if it's weather for jeans though. Have you ever tried long johns and a pair of non-cotton trousers? Might help you keep a bit warmer. Even a thin windproof shell over your fleece would help too.

    • @AmateurRadioUK
      @AmateurRadioUK  Рік тому +1

I quite often put windproof/waterproof layers on over the top. You're right, it does a lot to help keep you warm when you keep the wind out.
The wind actually wasn't that bad, especially as I was sheltered by the brick wall. It was more that I had been sitting still for so long.
As for jeans, I'm a bit of a creature of habit. I wear jeans everywhere, much to the dismay of some people. Jeans are fine as long as you don't get them wet.
