    ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS run the ground to the battery not the chassis.
    Makes for less alternator/ equipment noise.
    Don't roll the cable up, fold it.
    Rolled coax cable becomes an RF choke and will reduce the signal in and out.
    Any arial within 1/4 wave of the radiating antenna will distort the radiation pattern and cause the signal to become directional.

      So run the ground from the unit in the cab to the battery? Is it really necessary?

      @@carl8568 only if you want good radio performance.
      If you don't mind the alternator whine on your transmit and receive, take the easy way out.

      Ok, it looks like my Uniden unit comes with a long negative wire so it should be pretty easy. Thanks.

    Hi Graham.
    I've never owned a UHF but I'm planning a full lap around Australia starting in Melbourne.
    My question. What are the do's and don'ts? When do you use it? Are there fun things to be done with it or is it just for emergencies?

  • @CHRIS_CREATIONS

    The best option would be to wire it to the Facctory Fuse Block with a Relay therefore their is no parasitic draw

    I cut the fme terminals off. They are almost impossible to get through most firewalls. Also always disconnect all battery power first to the vehicle !

    When you do your zip ties do them up facing down dont use a lighter makes them brittle and they snap quicker

    Hi Team I have this unit in NZ, my Question is can you feed aerial and share am/fm radio roof aerial without interference of stereo reception etc, hope that makes sense sounds clear as mud lol

    Why can't Uniden make heavy duty antennas for 27mhz USA market? All we can get are junk fiberglass that break very easy or extremely flexable stainless steel that wip around and have almost no db gain ........

  • @bonza167
    @bonza167 4 роки тому +4

    Uniden customer service is crap. I bought a Uniden Adventure pack that came with a 9060 radio and an AT890BKS aerial. in the box there were instructions for the radio but absolutely no instructions or a guide for the aerial. wasnt sure about something to do with the aerial so asked uniden a question via email on their website and got a condescending answer about getting a professional to install it. WTF? my other truck will get a GME if that's Unidens attitude

  • @scod3908
    @scod3908 4 роки тому +1

    No conduit on the wiring. Flush cutters are better than side cutters and messing around with a lighter. Incorrectly terminating the antenna wire and not testing it is the most common cause of issues and wasn't covered. I'm also surprised that Uniden left in his comment about antennas mounted together, 1/2 wavelength apart is the rule of thumb (better to have one on each side of the bar, not that a bullbar is the best place to mount it in the first place in terms of performance)

    • @kungfucommando1642
      @kungfucommando1642 3 роки тому

      Scott I’ve never seen an Australian off road antenna installation anywhere BUT the bull bar. In the US we tend to opt for the center of the vehicle for optimum ground plane. But then the antenna is so high it catches limbs and won’t fit into a garage. So I do get why the aussies mount theirs on the bull bar. I guess a less than optimum mounting position outperforms an antenna that is broken off.

    • @scod3908
      @scod3908 3 роки тому

      Kungfu Commando , have seen many examples of antennas mounted on the rear bar up close to the body in USA UA-cam vids. Very strange place to put it. Maybe they’re cocky and only intend to transmit backwards?

    • @markwastall7960
      @markwastall7960 3 роки тому

      Scott, where would you recommend fitting the antenna then? Bonnet hinge mount or on the roof?

    • @scod3908
      @scod3908 3 роки тому +2

      Mark Wastall roof is ideal for performance, not great for tight tracks with the default 6db whips, however a rubber ducky on the roof would be hard to damage and be enough gain for the hills. A fold down base on the roof you can reach from drivers seat to fold, and swap antennas depending on terrain is probably the best arrangement.
      Bonnet edge is higher than bullbar and less vibration.
      Everything is a compromise.
