I saw this when the film opens & heard there's treasure & enjoy the film Considering I never play the Vid-game before Warning The Jack Black robot is super annoying!
15:20 sirens are super important in the games. Thing is, the reveal "Lilith is a siren, one of 7 most powerful beings in whole universe" IS IN THE FIRST MINUTE OF THE FIRST GAME
That would be like an adaptation of Harry Potter where the final plot-twist is that Harry is a Wizard. YOU DON'T BUILD A WHOLE STORY AROUND SOMETHING THAT'S ESTABLISHED STRAIGHT AWAY!!!
@@simple-commentator-not-rea7345that’s because it doesn’t have a huge grasp on the over all plot unless you’re playing as her. Idk I played the game as Brick, and I don’t really remember hearing anything about the sirens
@@tgiacin435 It doesn't factor into the plot even if you're playing as her. It's background lore. Becomes more important in the second game but even then it's not really about Lilith.
Its not even an awful movie, except for imbeciles who have never seen it and will just Rain Man out what they hear on the internet , derp Borderlands bad, yeah definitely bad, derp, derp I get my underwear from K-Mart .....The movie is just meh more than anything remotely close to bad atleast bad could still be entertaining to have fun or make fun of
2 Points: 1) You know this movie did woefully when Doug is able to review it with no copyright strike only a few months after it released. and 2) The games already did all the hard work with the story, heck, just make the origin story on how all the people got stranded on Pandora, Mostly DAHL corporation civvies and scientists (Like Tannis)
The thing is, they made games that show how to make an interesting movie in this setting. The tales from the Borderlands games(at least the first one) have stories that are less of the constant gunfight of the main games, and focus on characters that aren't the sci fi action heroes the vault hunters are. If they weren't going to go full action movie balls to the wall, then that is the sort of story they should have told. It even means they don't have to adapt the beloved main characters, and could go without rehashing the game plot or annoying fans for not doing the game's plot. The franchise has tons of potential and instead we got a knckoff made by people who is don't believe even watched cutscenes from the games. Why does Hollywood keep having people who don't know or care about the source material make adaptations of games and cartoons? Or rather why do they think it will make them money to make things that alienate the fans of the original and fail to appeal to the general public?
@@timothycarney9652 Very true, played the tales game after purchasing "Pandora's Box' and although it wasn't really my taste, I could respect that the game had some passion and love put into it and why others did enjoy it.
And point number 2 is *exactly* part of the problem with this movie. It's the same thing NC pointed out in his Suicide Squad review: Since they're doing it "for the fans" they can just toss any character or term from the games they want on the screen and expect the audience to know what it is and understand why it matters, ergo they don't need to *establish* why it matters. It's the ultimate form of lazy writing.
What's most annoying is that Claptrap in the games is a funny annoying. Everyone hates him, but the world lets you know that even he hates himself as he's programmed to always sound enthusiastic, no matter how he's actually feeling. There is a reason he won an award for "Best Character" the year the original Borderlands game came out.
To be fair, Claptrap can come across as annoying in-game too. I remember not liking him before I even started my first save file, because you're forced to hear him sperging out in the background
You wanna know why everyone is treating Cate Blanchet like she's 20 in this movie? Because that's how old Lilith is supposed to be. And Tannis (played by Jamie Lee Curtis for some reason) is supposed to be around that age too
I haven't seen this movie yet and it still doesn't seem as bad as last airbender; still bad, but not that bad. At least it pronounces the names correctly. The only movie worse than last airbender is dragon ball evolution.
The movie that makes you think you should check out the source material, but punishes you for knowing the source material. Because it took inspiration from everything but the source material.
This movie was written by people who only read the wikipedia for the first two games, but didnt play either. For me, the great part about games like borderlands is playing the game, making progress towards your build, finding cool weapons that synergize with your customized talent tree. I played as lilith/siren in both games with an smg build. I liked shooting really fast, and having elemental effects proc often. The "story" in borderlands is not about the character being the chosen one, or the vault, or the evil corporations. The story is my own experience with the gameplay, something a movie is not suited to portraying. They got the medium for experiencing borderlands all wrong, its just better as a game.
@@app2530 There were a lot of missing elements. Tales from the borderlands was essentially an interactive movie. They just lacked a lot of essential elements for this movie. In fact live action was a mistake they could've just had the cell shaded style animation for the entire movie. Plus they were missing a lot of the guns. On top of that they didn't show how insane this world could be. They had two of the more insane characters on the team, but they should've had the original vault hunters reacting to how crazy the world is.
I can't believe they threw out the fascinating physiology of sirens and turned it into some chosen one bs. The lore behind sirens in borderlands is so cool, how could they not want to use it?
@@fangchick93 See? idk anything about the siren lore. I know I chose the character with the cool hair that turned invisible and in the second game, the one that put bad guys in a bubble. I like to turn invisible and make a shockwave blast, and shoot guns fast. I like grinding for levels and killing the bosses and getting sweet lootz. Borderlands the game is awesome for all that stuff, a movie is not.
I don’t understand how you can take Borderlands, a game series that has a quest with a guy BEGGING YOU TO SHOOT HIM IN THE FACE and turn it into something so… dull. The ingredients for at least a fun popcorn movie are RIGHT THERE.
Even the insane guns too, guns that grows legs, guns that explode, guns that shoots more guns, guns that shoots swords borderlands has an insane amount of creativity
"Why does everyone think Cate Blancett is like 20?" As I think everyone else has stated, her character in the games is supposed to be in her 20s, so of course it naturally makes sense to cast someone in her 50s in the role, what the hell was the casting director on?
That's not the problem though it's that they casted two 60 year olds to play two 20 year olds, a 5'5'' comedian to play a 5'11" straight-man, oddly enough Tiny Tina's Actress was probably the closest in age to her game counterpart.....4 years off but 4 years is better than 40 years off, Krieg looked the most like his in game counter part....but because of the stupid fucking PG-13 Rating he couldn't "BE KRIEG" because Krieg isn't suitable for young teens & FINALY if the character is gonna be full CGI, JUST USE THE VOICE ACTOR FROM THE GAME FOR CLAP-TRAP, I am sick & fucking tired of Jack "Fucking Peaked in 2016" Black playing every "funny" character now. He's the Michael Myers of this Generation.
@@Hellfire918 While Jack Black is legitimately funny, he's not the "comedian for every role" some people think he is. That's like me saying Idris Elba is the only black actor out there. The entire cast was wrong, the designs were wrong, the story was wrong, every single thing about this movie was just... WRONG. They didn't get a single thing right apart from some names.
First mistake of movie: Krieg is not narrator. Imagine to hear calm and heroic voice then to discover it belongs to psycho who speaks complete opposite.
Seriously, why isn’t he in there a movie?! Nobody who’s played the games ever gave two shits about Atlas! It wasn’t until after Tales that they started building Atlas back up
@@Transgenderedmonarch Atlas isnt even in the main games at all. I dont know why they made Atlas the main villain this time there were way better option such as the actual villain of Borderlands, Handsome Jack who is iconic or just the two villains from #3.
The choices they made to alter the story are just bizarre. Borderlands is a goofy whacky game, but in many ways the characters are a study of how long term ab use, isolation and violence can damage people. Hell, Roland is supposed to be "the sane one" but because he only knows how to be a soldier he basically has no social skills and it affects his ability to have relationships....he can lead a revolution but struggles to maintain a romantic relationship....that's the sane one. All the characters of Borderlands are deeply damaged people, when you peel back the childish humour of the games, there is some real, brutal tragedy to each of their lives that they are all trying to cope with by having this make-shift rag-tag family they created. The choices made in trying to give it "a movie treatment" sucked any nuance out of it.
13:40 Nobody can convince me to believe that anyone fell for the "twist". If you played the games then you know she's a Siren. If you didn't, her character design just gives it away. Maybe they were banking on the fact that fans knew it was a poor adaptation and would think its so poor that they'd commit to having Tina be the Siren. EDIT: Also, why "Knoxx"? If you're gonna change almost everything about a character, why have them in the movie only to do next to nothing? Same goes for "Krom" EDIT again: There's also something I hate about the costume design. Things just look too "clean", like they came neat and pressed right off a clothes rack.
Apparently Randy gave them exclusive film rights to any game they used references from, so they used them all, and the cast and crew were told the studio would add in grit in post from a cgi team not under the control of the directors for some reason (they didn't), this entire film feels like a scam to steal movie rights and nothing more.
@ Its kind of a strange move right? "Lets use the name of a popular character so the fans like it!" "Oh, so should we put the character in?" "Nope! The fans will know enough to recognize that the names are the same, but surely won't be confused that the characters are different" Like what??? Edit: its sort of like if you made a new batman adaptation and “the riddler” was a little kid who goes “batman look out!” and then gets crushed by a rock. Like why?! Whats the point?!
It really does feel that way. While watching interviews, it almost felt like none of them actually liked the source material. Eli Roth in his interview said that he only cared that the "spirit" of borderlands was faithfully adapted.
Full transparency, not a major Borderlands fan but the thing that struck me as immediately weird was the car you see them driving in the trailer. I could be wrong but that seems like a very 'normal' car for both Pandora and a sci-fi setting.
The casting is beyond bizarre. People complain that Tobey Maguire was too old to play Spider-Man, but here we have a 60 something woman playing a 20 something siren, and a 60 something woman playing a 40 something bar lady. A short stack playing a muscle mountain badass, etc. Nothing fits in tone or looks
They cast Kevin Hart, a comedian, as Rolan. The straight man of the borderlands universe. A guy who's just a big string soldier and takes the absolute absurdity of Borderlands with a straight face
Another Fun Fact: Eli Roth originally shot the film with an R rating, keeping it closer to the style of the M-rating held by the original Borderlands video games. Further screenplay rewrites and two weeks of reshoots by Tim Miller dialed the film back to PG-13. This is only Roth's second film to receive a rating other than R, after The House with a Clock in Its Walls, which was PG.
Roth has Thanksgiving slasher movie, which was a big enough success for a sequel to currently be in development, so he should be fine. Miller also has Secret Level, which looks like a love letter for gamers of all ages, so as long as that turns out good he should be fine too. I think Avi Arad and studio interference deserve the brunt of the blame for how Borderlands turned out.
Well that still won't save it. They never played the game nor even know any of the characters but claptrap which is the only one that they got right. This is one of those movies that are so bad you got to laugh at it when you watch it.
A Curious Fact: Lilith's main gun is called "Vladof Infinity" by Marcus, and in the video game, it is a legendary pistol with infinite ammo, which explains why she never runs out and never need to reload it.
This is why I don't watch a movie because of the cast When a movie spends a fortune with a heavy cast, exotic locations, and extravagant costumes It means that very little was spent to make the script
How much does it even cost to write a movie anyway? You pay one or more people several thousand dollars to write the script for a few weeks, then maybe one or more people are paid several thousand dollars to make edits to the script for another week, then the writers apply the feedback they're given over the next few months until their final draft is at least passable, AND THEN you start making the movie. As long as the studio hires competent writers and don't interfere too much, there's no reason why the script can't be of the same quality as the rest of the film. The fact that the Borderlands movie went through ten writers over nearly a decade of development tells you everything.
I don't know how they fumbled this movie. They could just follow the first movie and improve it with writing in part to fill voids or fix some parts but eh this is modern hollywood we're talking about.
as I said it before and said it again; they could of gave us mad max, with three very interesting characters, one a half crazed runaway, a psychotic gore man and a strict badass soldier who so strict you think he cant feel any emotion. as they engage in wacky races from hell... with lasers and killer robots, they could of done that... so basically mad max but in SPAAACCCEEE.
The reason everyone thinks Lilith is only 20, is because in the games she is in her young 20s and Tanith is supposed to be in her later 20s or early 30s. Instead they casted actresses who are more than twice those ages.
Claptrap made an appearance in a (now delisted) video game called "Poker Night 2", alongside characters like Ash Williams and Sam from Sam and Max, and that had more love for Borderlands than this.
@@louisduarte8763 No you're right on the money. The cast of 2 was as follows: Sam "With Max in the background occasionally giving bits of commentary", Ash Williams, Brock Sampson, Claptrap, and GlaDOS as The Dealer. Oh there's also Guybrush Threepwood's 1st Mate from Tales From Monkey Island as The Doorman/Assistant Manager.
You’d think that after two Sonic The Hedgehog movies, an animated Mario Bros movie, and two shows based on Fallout and The Last Of Us, other movie studios would try to take more inspiration from the games. Instead, Borderlands came in to say “Who needs the games when we have when we can make this the Rise Of Skywalker of video game adaptations?”
I was so very glad that they actually fixed the first Sonic Movie entirely and redo the entire film twice and made it a lot better. And then it got even more better and bigger with the sequel and introduce two more iconic and beloved Sonic The Hedgehog characters. And now this year and next month, They're going to reach it's peak in their third film by bringing another iconic and legendary Sonic The Hedgehog character and be based and inspired by one of the best and greatest Sonic The Hedgehog games of all time.
All of your examples were made by people who grew up with or at least respected the games as the source material, Borderlands was screwed over by people who didn’t give a shit about the games.
When you're a big fan of Borderlands like me, this movie is a major insult, since it could've been so good! The casting was a big problem. I think the casting for Tina, Claptrap, Krieg, Moxxi and Marcus were good, but Roland, Lilith and Tannis were majorly miscast. Cate Blanchett should've been cast as Commandant Steele, the main villain from the first game. Idris Elba should've played Roland, Emma Stone or Margot Robbie as Lilith, and someone like Daisy Ridley, Aubrey Plaza or Anne Hathaway should've played Tannis. That, and the writing and editing DEFINITELY needed work....
Have to disagree with you about Daisy Ridley. I think Amy Acker would have been a very good Tannis. Her character Root on Person of Interest had the kind of crazy randomness I would expect in Tannis so we know she can play the part.
I'd kinda disagree on Tina, but that was a more honest mistake than Kevin Hart. Ariana Greenblatt is a young performer, and I can buy the casting director not understanding at the time of casting that her energy is more deadpan than manic.
"A character that could be funny, but has been coming across as rather annoying recently? I'm gonna assume you're played by Jack Black." This joke could also work if he switched Jack Black with Awkwafina.
Really would loved to know what Craig Mazin’s initial script for this movie was like, cause considering his past work in spoof films I’d say he was the perfect candidate for the franchise
Lilith is 20, so is Tannis. Roland is a LARGE, serious, paladin (so yeah, total opposite of Kevin Hart). And if they wanted to make ANY kind of GOOD Borderlands movie, it should have been based on Borderlands 2 - with Handsome Jack and the villain.
Furiosa is the only good movie that was on the box office bombs list that NC had on his spin the wheel before starting the review. He already did Madame Web months ago. I watched Argylle in theaters with my Family because they picked it and I’m a huge fan of Matthew Vaughn, who did Kingsman, but I really didn’t like it other than Sam Rockwell and Catherine O’Hara’s performance and a few good scenes which I loved.
This is "But why though?" the movie. The casting is horrible, and Kevin Hart as Roland is the worst of them all. And I just don't get why they decided to act like no one knew Lilith was a Siren. This wasn't a secret or a plot twist or a reveal in the games. She's a Siren. It's like making a movie based on Harry Potter and waiting until the end to reveal he's a wizard. That's the whole point!
AVI ARAD has ruined so far... * Borderlands * Venom: The Last Dance * Daredevil (2003) * The Punisher (2004) * Elektra (2005) * Fantastic Four (2005) * X-Men: The Last Stand * Spider-Man 3 * Bratz (2007) * Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance * The Amazing Spider-Man 2 * Ghost in the Shell (2017) * Venom: Let There Be Carnage * Uncharted (2022) * Morbius And now he's gonna ruin... * Kraven the Hunter * Legend of Zelda * Naruto As long as Arad lives, there's no hope
Fun Fact: Eli Roth shot the film in the summer of 2021 and purportedly finished it in early 2022. However, the film was deemed incomplete due to varying rumors and reasons, including the studio objecting to the first cut's extreme R-rated violence, Eli Roth's refusal to return due to studio interference, and poor screen testing. The film lingered for over two years while in post-production. In January 2023, the studio hired Tim Miller to undertake two weeks of re-shoots. These re-shoots wound up being so extensive that Steve Jablonsky was hired to write a new musical score, as Nathan Barr's original score no longer fit the film.
Yeah it’s like what happened when the studio and producers of Fan4stic changed director Josh Trank’s version of the film for some dumb reason. Same applies with The Star Wars sequel trilogy when Michael Arndt needed more time to create his own screenplay for Force Awakens, but Disney and Lucasfilm felt that it would be way too long, so Arndt left and JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan took over and re-wrote his screenplay. And for Rise of Skywalker, Colin Trevorrow was originally going to be the Director of that film. His story and script he did was called “Duel of the Fates”, but left due to “Creative Differences” with producer Kathleen Kennedy, and so JJ Abrams returned and did the film.
The biggest insult to fans of the game is Tiny Tina. Tiny Tina is INSANE - she knows it and she embraces it. In the movie she's just ... well ... an *slightly* over the top teenager. And that's it. And don't we all LOVE over-the-top-teenagers? (spoiler alert: the answer is "no").
This movie was so dogshit that they couldn’t even get the CASTING right. How the hell are you going to make Kevin hart play a character know for being the straight man
Here’s the thing with Claptrap - he’s supposed to be annoying. He was extremely irritating in the game, but he was also funny and he had a really dark backstory. This movie focused on the annoying part and left out the other two.
What's even dumber the reveal of Lilith's firehawk powers is that it's literally her main power play in the game. So the big twist is something Borderlands fans already know about her with no real surprise and offers absolutely nothing to the general non-players who have no idea what's going on. This literally pleases nobody.
You're cued into her being a Siren in the opening cutscene that introduces all the characters. The big secret of this movie is something that is revealed in the first minute of the game.
Her being the Firehawk also wasn't this big 'prophesied chosen one' BS the movie is pushing. She literally got the name from a cult she started BY ACCIDENT.
After watching this movie, you probably know less about the games now. I refuse to call the villain anything other than "Why Isn't the Villain Handsome Jack"
Because clearly you know jack and or shit about the games......Besides ALL of the games having awful stories, NO "Jack" is not tre kewl....The first game was literally finding a key to get loot from a vault only to have a 30 second fight with tentacles.... Its literally the story of the first game and it doesn't even have the decency to be bad, the movie is MEH at best
@@lutherheggs451 Mostly true Except that the game has Lilith as a Siren from minute 1, and it's not a reveal in any way. A character's *core trait* as an end-of-movie reveal is a.....weird decision.
0:42 To Sum up the Game: this world is called Pandora where anyone can prosper as a "Vault Hunter" with a Shit ton of guns and Memorable Characters The guns are divided up by who makes em

If you hated this as non fan, imagine how us actual fans felt, i have been a fan of the games for nearly a decade now and watching this on the big screen was like watching everything i loved about the series get slowly ripped out and replaced by awfulness
I loved playing the games and as soon as i saw the cast i knew i didn't want to see this movie. And from what i can see now in Doug;s review, it looks like they butchered every single character... i don't even understand how they could mess that up so badly.
Didn't you get that feeling already playing Bolrderlands 3? Maybe we're different fans, but to me, THAT is where the series started going downhill. It got worse with "Telltale's Borderlands that wasn't made by Telltale"
@@simple-commentator-not-rea7345 No because unlike the minority of non bl fans i cared for the series and thought the gameplay for bl3 was pheonimal game that was a huge step forward fo the series.
As a big fan of the graphic Novel and the original Brandon Lee Crow movie. I've still not seen the remake of the crow on principal. I know it's gonna be bad. Just based on watching the trailer. It's soulless
Just a few things of note as to why this movie pisses off fans so much. In the games, Lilith *is* supposed to be in her 20s, Tina is infinitely more annoying, (you either love her or hate her), Claptrap is much funnier and deliberately pathetic, oh, and absolutely nothing in the plot of this movie resembles anything at all from the games. It also weirdly takes characters from both the first and second games which is a huge disservice to characters from both games. Also, in general, the Vault Hunters, (the main characters in the games, with Lilith and Roland being two of the four from the first game, and Kreig being a DLC character from the second), are all likeable psychopaths who are fine with murdering people constantly searching for the vault mostly just to get rich. They're having fun with it, and it's a world full of such complete nutjobs so you don't feel bad for anyone they're killing. This is just a massive insult to fans and while the games aren't for everyone, I highly recommend giving them a chance, because this shouldn't be anyone's sole experience with the franchise.
In an era where adaptations are more comfortable adapting their source material no matter how wacky, I was very surprised to see how bad this was received and I wasn’t even interested in it. Not that being faithful to the source material automatically equals good, but it still surprised me how hard they dropped the ball.
... It has only the barebones knowledge of the game, I wouldn't call that faithful to the source material, that's the point of why it's so bad, so many elements taken from the game with everything else made up nonsensically in between.
@@Kazeromaru I should’ve clarified. On a visual level it looked like a video game adaptation and in today’s day and age, more adaptations are closely resembling the source material and often see better reception. It’s a weird throwback to the days of Catwoman.
I don't know much about the games either, but from what I had heard, this movie had been in development hell for a couple of years. Apparently, the original script was so good that there were bidding wars for the script. However, once Eli Roth got the script, there were a ton of rewrites and the original writer asked his name to be removed In the games, the characters were supposed to be in their 20s, and when they saw they cast of older actors, it made the fans furious. So I guess that's why they're treating Cate Blanchett's character like someone in their 20s, cuz in the games, she was in her 20s I'm sure there are other things that the movie gets wrong that the fans will tell me, but that's all I remembered hearing about.
To quote the late great Norm MacDonald and something i'm sure Jack Black might be thinking about right now is “Note to self: no matter how bad life gets, there’s always beer.”
7:42 You're seriously ripping off Ready Player One? 12:49 You're seriously ripping off Jem and the Holograms? 15:03 YOU'RE SERIOUSLY RIPPING OFF DARK PHOENIX???
@Dim4323 Same. So much fun, enjoyable, and entertaining. Just like the original games themselves. And it makes sense since the original Lara Croft was inspired after Angelina Jolie herself.
General Knox was so much more memorable in Borderlands 1. I highly recommend you check out some of his voice lines. The guy is a competent soldier who thanks to the weird corporatism in the Borderlands universe has to listen to a literal child for orders. The voice actor gives the impression of a guy going through the motions because his honor demands it all the while just hoping for the sweet release of death.
Marvel fans: "We want VENOM to be R-Rated." Avi Arad: "VENOM will be PG-13, so everyone can bring their children to watch it. It will be fun for the whole family." Me: "Þussy"
I still remember that clip with the original director saying it's full of blood and gore just like the games and the Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford standing right next to him saying it's a family film for everyone, then they laugh looking at each other. Then director is replaced, then 3 years later a movie that feels like whole scenes are missing, or that there should be more violence but it's all off screen screen, comes out.
The funniest thing about the visuals is that Cosplayers who dress up for fun can (and have) made more accurate/ interesting costumes for these characters than the professional costume and set designers
That's the issue nowadays with many adaptations, including Disney's remakes : if a hardcore fan can do better with some clothes and their two hands, your costume is not enough for a movie.
Mine was Madame Web. Cause it was an disrespectful insult to Joan Lee's iconic Madame Web voice performance in Spider-Man:The Animated Series. And she already perfected the character in that show. RIP Joan Lee.
This film felt as if Eli Roth played Borderlands for about ten minutes and then became confident that he knew enough about the game to make a good adaptation. Man, oh, man was he mistaken.
I’ve never been to a video so early. Anyway tell me if this comes true in ten years. The Simpsons reaches season 45, we get a woman president, a famous celebrity who no one likes dies, family guy gets a movie. Secret wars makes 3.5 billion at the box office. Thanks see you in a decade.
Family guy will only get a movie when it ends cause Seth saw how Simpsons had to handle the movie with the show too, and how SpongeBob did it well but for the next 3 movies had out of house studios handle it and it wasn’t as good
Bad direction Bad performances Bad characters Bad story Bad edition Bad jokes Bad CGI Bad cinematography Bad production design I think it really is the worst movie of the year 🤷♂️
For anyone who never played the games: Borderlands can be summed up as a looter-shooter with tons of personality. The plot was always very minimal and simplistic, you pick 1.of 4 characters, and go on an adventure to find the vault (for supposed fame and fortune). The true stars are the thousands of different guns, and the NPC characters you meet. Characters were either creepily awkward, silly but wacky, or batshit insane, leading to some very funny moments. Obviously you can't do looter-shooter mechanics in a movie, you'll have to rely on characters and writing to keep audiences invested...which it failed...
"Why does everyone think [Lilith] is twenty?" Because in the games she is supposed to be a young woman, but for some reason is played by Cate Blanchett in the movie.
Nostalgia Critic : "I know nothing about Borderlands, I've never played those games" Also Nostalgia Critic, in most videos this past year : "Hey come watch me play the Borderlands games on Twitch!" Yeah okay
I'd like to imagine that he does the reviews first and then does the games for some of these movies and just edits in the fact that he's playing the game during the review.
Lore wise the Sirens are incredibly important. The problem is anyone who has played the games know Lilith is one. There is no surprise or big reveal for us. While anyone who hasn't played them doesn't know the significance because the movie never explained it properly.
God I hate how they ruined Kreig, They turned a surprisingly complicated character, into a dumb muscle, Kreig has a split personality, with the original him, forcing the body to agree that he can never hurt an innocent person, but now he's just a dumb mindless monster, Especially without maya he has no purpose, just the muscle, I can't believe I'm saying this I would rather take dwayne johnson as Brick, then you have a purpose for someone who has dumb muscle.
What do you think is the worst video game movie?

Both Nostalgia Critic and Pitch Meeting are the best way to watch a movie I don't want to watch
@@pedrogarcia5932 facts
Actually exactly what I did 😆
~_~
2 Points:
1) You know this movie did woefully when Doug is able to review it with no copyright strike only a few months after it released.
and 2) The games already did all the hard work with the story, heck, just make the origin story on how all the people got stranded on Pandora, Mostly DAHL corporation civvies and scientists (Like Tannis)
Also, it's literally shorter than many of the past few years' reviews, on top of _feeling_ a lot shorter than his usual reviews.
An amazing world and story was served on a silver platter, and they still went with prepackaged junk food
That and he constantly gets beaten up, bullied and kidnapped, which also gives quite a bit of catharsis to everyone who actually hates on him
To be fair, Claptrap can come across as annoying in-game too. I remember not liking him before I even started my first save file, because you're forced to hear him sperging out in the background
Pretty much a slap in the face to not use the original voice actor either, just because they wanted to slap Jack Black's star power on the role.
He's like the opposite of Marvin the Paranoid Android.
Or Towlie from South Park.
"If I sound pleased about all of this, it's only because my programmers made this my default tone of voice. I'm actually quite depressed."
You wanna know why everyone is treating Cate Blanchet like she's 20 in this movie?
Because that's how old Lilith is supposed to be. And Tannis (played by Jamie Lee Curtis for some reason) is supposed to be around that age too
A perfect way to avoid fanservice by casting middle aged women.
Welcome to current-day Hollywood.
I get wanting to shoehorn big names into movies but is it that hard to find ones the right age?

"Why does everyone think Cate Blancett is like 20?"
As I think everyone else has stated, her character in the games is supposed to be in her 20s, so of course it naturally makes sense to cast someone in her 50s in the role, what the hell was the casting director on?
With how bad the casting of this film is, i'm legit surprised they got a child actress to play Tina.
@@robmacher3253 They could have got Ashley, you know she was the original actor and could play the part.

Honestly Kate would have made a good Mad Moxxxi.
Basic Google search: “The average age of Borderlands players is 18-30.”
Borderlands casting: “A cast of people in their 60s seems perfect.”
Uuh, no, Borderlands 3 did that first. But yeah, this movie is the worst that Borderlands can get
13:40 Nobody can convince me to believe that anyone fell for the "twist".
Same goes for "Krom"
EDIT again: There's also something I hate about the costume design. Things just look too "clean", like they came neat and pressed right off a clothes rack.
Apparently Randy gave them exclusive film rights to any game they used references from, so they used them all, and the cast and crew were told the studio would add in grit in post from a cgi team not under the control of the directors for some reason (they didn't), this entire film feels like a scam to steal movie rights and nothing more.
the writers assume nobody has played the game because obviously none of them played it.
@ Its kind of a strange move right?
"Lets use the name of a popular character so the fans like it!"
"Oh, so should we put the character in?"
"Nope! The fans will know enough to recognize that the names are the same, but surely won't be confused that the characters are different"
Like what???
I don't know how the hell Tobey Maguire's age was an issue. My problem with Maguire was his weird collapsing anus face bitch-crying.
Tobey could pass well in spider man.... these people not so much
They cast Kevin Hart, a comedian, as Rolan.

I blame Avi Arad
House with a clock in the walls is a pretty good kids horror film. It has some scares but nothing too crazy.
@@koneheadcokehead4981 damn you Tim Miller.
And then In the movie It runs out of ammo anyway because clichés!

@@nero9981 The Dove in BL1 was an Infinity Dahl pistol with terrible firerate truth be told.

I think also Lilith is like in her 20s, while Cate is like in her 50s.
This is why I don't watch a movie because of the cast
When a movie spends a fortune with a heavy cast, exotic locations, and extravagant costumes
It means that very little was spent to make the script
How much does it even cost to write a movie anyway? You pay one or more people several thousand dollars to write the script for a few weeks, then maybe one or more people are paid several thousand dollars to make edits to the script for another week, then the writers apply the feedback they're given over the next few months until their final draft is at least passable, AND THEN you start making the movie. As long as the studio hires competent writers and don't interfere too much, there's no reason why the script can't be of the same quality as the rest of the film. The fact that the Borderlands movie went through ten writers over nearly a decade of development tells you everything.
I mean... The Lord of the Rings trilogy did exactly that, though.
@DarkOverlord96 Yeah,
But the way they did it was actually done right and the way it should've been.
Not the way it was supposed to be.
@@DarkOverlord96I didn't know most of the actors before that

The reason everyone thinks Lilith is only 20, is because in the games she is in her young 20s and Tanith is supposed to be in her later 20s or early 30s. Instead they casted actresses who are more than twice those ages.

Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for that ASSASSIN'S CREED show Netflix announced however many years ago.
I was so very glad that they actually fixed the first Sonic Movie entirely and redo the entire film twice and made it a lot better.

Woooosh! You missed the point. This Lilith LOOKS like 50+ Blanchett. No one SHOULD think she's in her 20's.
After watching this movie, you probably know less about the games now. I refuse to call the villain anything other than "Why Isn't the Villain Handsome Jack"
Lets be honest they would never do Handsome Jack justice.
@@lutherheggs451 Mostly true
Except that the game has Lilith as a Siren from minute 1, and it's not a reveal in any way.
A character's *core trait* as an end-of-movie reveal is a.....weird decision.
@@KaguroDraven
Like having Lilith played by an actress twice her age?
If this was successful enough for a sequel, Ryan Reynolds would have been perfect for that role.

To Sum up the Game: this world is called Pandora where anyone can prosper as a "Vault Hunter" with a Shit ton of guns and Memorable Characters
The guns are divided up by who makes em
Anyone who played Borderlands understands that it simply cannot exist as a movie.
Why?

The cast is terrible
The writing is terrible
Every bit of it comes across as a different part of the game despite none of them coming across as any part of any of the three games
It just sucks
Could you please do these as part of FanScription
• What if Alice never escaped Wonderland (Alice in Wonderland 1951movie)
• What if Disney’s Bolt 2 happened?
• What if Maleficent hadn't cursed Aurora (Disney’s Sleeping Beauty 1959movie)
• Big Hero 6 vs Ultron
• What if Meg was the real hero in Disney’s Hercules (1997movie)
• What if Ariel didn’t become human in Disney’s The Little Mermaid (1989movie)
• What if Nala married Scar in Disney’s The Lion King
• Batman vs Electro
• Spider-man vs Mr. Freeze
• What if Lady Tremaine (from Cinderella 1950movie) had won?
• What if we fixed Van Helsing (2004movie)
He's not gonna do any of those.
Stop.
11:25 That line actually gave me Forspoken PTSD.

Teleportation! I can move stuff with my mind, ya'll!
Girl from Forespoken: You can move stuff with your freaking mind!?
The crow came from the same movie company that gave us border lands btw. Lions gate
As a big fan of the graphic Novel and the original Brandon Lee Crow movie. I've still not seen the remake of the crow on principal. I know it's gonna be bad. Just based on watching the trailer. It's soulless
Well they are definitely lion about the quality of the films coming out of the gate
This is just a massive insult to fans and while the games aren't for everyone, I highly recommend giving them a chance, because this shouldn't be anyone's sole experience with the franchise.
wasn't expecting this movie so soon
Doug needs to totally play the borderlands pandoras box collection
However, once Eli Roth got the script, there were a ton of rewrites and the original writer asked his name to be removed
In the games, the characters were supposed to be in their 20s, and when they saw they cast of older actors, it made the fans furious. So I guess that's why they're treating Cate Blanchett's character like someone in their 20s, cuz in the games, she was in her 20s
I'm sure there are other things that the movie gets wrong that the fans will tell me, but that's all I remembered hearing about.
To quote the late great Norm MacDonald and something i'm sure Jack Black might be thinking about right now is “Note to self: no matter how bad life gets, there’s always beer.”
From Dirty Work, hilarious and underrated gem
I’m glad Jack’s getting money from this roles, even if the movie around them sucks
7:42 You're seriously ripping off Ready Player One? 12:49 You're seriously ripping off Jem and the Holograms? 15:03 YOU'RE SERIOUSLY RIPPING OFF DARK PHOENIX???
We owe the 1993 mario movie an apology.
And Lara Croft: Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie as well.
@@jeuryrabassa4724 I like tomb raider movies
@Dim4323 Same.
So much fun, enjoyable, and entertaining.
Just like the original games themselves.
And it makes sense since the original Lara Croft was inspired after Angelina Jolie herself.
She feels more like a 13 year old Harley Quinn wannabe then Tiny Tina.
💯💯💯. Exactly
Please review not only The Crocodile Hunter collision course but also Eight Below
Marvel fans: "We want VENOM to be R-Rated."
Avi Arad: "VENOM will be PG-13, so everyone can bring their children to watch it. It will be fun for the whole family."
Me: "Þussy"
I agree.
😂 So true. Even Venom himself called Eddie a pussy in the first movie in one scene.
This is a Borderlands video, Ray.
We still want a good written movie of Venom
Deadpool and Wolverine agrees with you on this one.
And they appreciate it.
It makes me happy to see you reference both MLP (Celestia) and One Piece
Doug should have an evil split counterpart named Recent Rip-Ass.
💀
Where?
The funniest thing about the visuals is that Cosplayers who dress up for fun can (and have) made more accurate/ interesting costumes for these characters than the professional costume and set designers
That's the issue nowadays with many adaptations, including Disney's remakes : if a hardcore fan can do better with some clothes and their two hands, your costume is not enough for a movie.
I couldn't even make it though it being uploaded to UA-cam for free. 😅
"The Firehawk" was literally just a nickname Lilith gave herself to sound more badass (and to make the player not realize who is being talked about)
The angriest I been at a movie in years…
Darn. I don’t blame you.
Mine was Madame Web.
Cause it was an disrespectful insult to Joan Lee's iconic Madame Web voice performance in Spider-Man:The Animated Series.
And she already perfected the character in that show.
RIP Joan Lee.
Technically, he was Claptrap before he was Bowser. That's how long ago this was filmed.
This film felt as if Eli Roth played Borderlands for about ten minutes and then became confident that he knew enough about the game to make a good adaptation. Man, oh, man was he mistaken.
Nobody:
Jack Black in this movie: *"I... am Claptrap."*
Like if this is the only way you're seeing this movie
He…Nostalgia Critic made a “One Piece” reference! That alone makes this an awesome review.
Family guy will only get a movie when it ends cause Seth saw how Simpsons had to handle the movie with the show too, and how SpongeBob did it well but for the next 3 movies had out of house studios handle it and it wasn’t as good
@@androognoix1685thanks for the fact 🙏

9:28 I'm only this far and the number of retcons and character assassinations is enough for an entire nine film series.
Claptrap is a direct ripoff of B.E.N. the robot from Treasure Planet.
For anyone who never played the games:
Borderlands can be summed up as a looter-shooter with tons of personality.
"Why does everyone think [Lilith] is twenty?"
Because in the games she is supposed to be a young woman, but for some reason is played by Cate Blanchett in the movie.
Talk about miscasting
I admittedly did get a kick out of the vending machine actually responding to Jackclap wanting to do her.
I'd never heard of the video game until I saw the trailer for this movie.
Same here
Nostalgia Critic : "I know nothing about Borderlands, I've never played those games"
Also Nostalgia Critic, in most videos this past year : "Hey come watch me play the Borderlands games on Twitch!"
Yeah okay
I'd like to imagine that he does the reviews first and then does the games for some of these movies and just edits in the fact that he's playing the game during the review.
Good friggin luck, Bioshock movie. You're gonna need it
Lore wise the Sirens are incredibly important. The problem is anyone who has played the games know Lilith is one. There is no surprise or big reveal for us. While anyone who hasn't played them doesn't know the significance because the movie never explained it properly.
I literally forgot this movie exist

here's to hoping doug cleanses his pallet by reviewing Transformers One!
This movie's cast was so weird, I wouldn't even have been too surprised if Tiny Tina had been played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
PUT THAT COOKIE DOWN!!
That would at least make it more entertaining.
3:00. Fun fact, Lilith is supposed to be in her mid twenties to mid thirties in the game so she really is too old for this.
10:31 and yet I question why did they cast Jack Black as Steve in the Minecraft movie again
