It is great to see young people given positive motivation and doing something so good. Their grooming and presentation was fine. Clearly, they were enjoying it. What an excellent program for children, and also for the adults that supervise. Very impressive. As for seeing the three generations of Tri-colours (Apple, Bootsie, Boo) that was also a delight. Apple of course in the spotlight. Thanks Chas-kat - always learning something new with your videos.

The kids are as cute as the dogs, and the kids concentrate harder. The dogs are far more relaxed.

Thank you - judging Junior Handling is one of the pure fun things we get to do! It's much more serious and focused work judging a specialty show. My next regular judging assignment is in May in Atlanta - I'm very much looking forward to it.

Apple's ears are looking much closer to even now - did you end up doing any trimming to balance her out?

We did some minimal thinning on the chewed ear, just so that it wouldn't look chopped, but it's mostly grown back on its own.

I have a question, is it safe to feed my cavalier Royal canin cavalier puppy? She loves it a lot but I seen many reviews Royal canin is bad but she loves it a lot and shes 7 months and I’ve been thinking to transition to the adult cavalier Royal canin when shes 10 months. Thank you!

I have not had a problem with Royal Canin - puppy or adult food. I've spoken many times with one of the veterinarians and a few of the other nutritional consultants that Royal Canin uses, and I'm impressed with their attention to the micronutrition additives they include in the Cavalier and other Small Dog formulas. Our dogs have done well on Royal Canin.
Your puppy will soon reach full adult skeletal size, and her nutritional needs will drastically decline - this usually happens between 7 months and a year of age. At that point, transition her to adult food, and cut down on the total amount. With Royal Canin, most of my adult dogs get about 3/4 once a day.

Yes - I know the winning Cavalier's breeder, and we see the young woman handling him at dog shows all the time. It was a good pick. Maybe next year Jamba or Apple or Bella will be ready to enter in this show. It's only about a 3 hour drive from here, so I'm happy to do it when they are mature enough to stand a chance.

When judging junior handling - are you judging the handler not the dog or am i thinking of something else - also i wish they had this for adults so people like me could learn without the pressure

You are correct. Even though the exhibiting may look the same as when we are judging dogs, in junior showmanship we are judging the handler. As you saw on the video, I try to make it educational and fun for the youngest junior handlers. By the time they get to the Senior level, it can look just as competitive as any dog show.
Also, there actually is something similar for adults to get experience without the pressure of conformation shows - there are informal, fun competitions called matches. You can get information at www.akc.org/sports/conformation/akc-match/. Use the event search tool to find a B Match near you.
