  • This video shows you how to remove the fuel filter and replace it on a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. For more videos on the Sonata, type Lsailor1 in the UA-cam search bar.
    UPDATE: After doing this, I found that the filter hole (where the fuel pump goes) did not have a tight fit and the fuel pressure was not high enough to get the engine to run. When I took the fuel pump by itself, it had plenty of pressure. Here is my advice: If you have over 100,000 miles on it, just buy the entire assembly (About $225 on Amazon) and put it in. A fuel pump only lasts about 100,000 miles, so you are avoiding further problems in the future. When you start this, have the tank as low as possible with gas. If you can, drop the tank off the car. It will allow easier access to the tank ring and getting the assembly in and out.
    You may want to see my video on the parts within a fuel pump assembly.

    Thanks Lsailor1 for taking the time and in old Aussie speak, for being a good bloke. I liked the way you presented it in text and pics without sound which in my experience tends confuse if not complicate the procedure. I estimated it would have taken about an hour or so to do given one has the appropriate tools and materials (as well as the confidence) and will ponder doing it myself or finding an honest technician/mechanic to do it....good job :)

      Thanks for watching and no worries Mate! Appreciate the kind comments! I have to be honest with you, after I got into it, it did not work out and I had to buy the entire fuel assembly (about $120.00). Some things you should do. I Try to get the car almost on empty. That way you don't have to remove too much gas to be able to clean and wipe out the tank. Take a look at the comments section of the video for more tips. You may like my other videos. Thanks man I might attempt to replace the fuel pump, for some reason I always thought the tank needed to be taken off. This looks like I can do it myself. I have 121K miles on my Sonata and the fuel pumps never been replaced so I think it probably needs it. I dont want to wait till I start having issues you know. Thanks for the video!

      Yeah that's what I planned on doing, just replacing the entire assembly and just dropping a new one in there rather then attempting to replace just the filter

      ***** Thanks for watching my video! What you need is the fuel pump ASSEMBLY. It includes the filter, the pump and the fuel pressure regulator. I found one on Amazon for about $225.00. The only problem I had with it was the fuel pipe was bent 90 instead of straight up like mine. Had to use old parts to get it to work. You might want to look at the link in the description and also my video called " How to make a cheap fuel pump locking ring removal tool for a 2006 Hyundai Sonata." I use Sea Foam in my gas. Great stuff!! Best, The Sailor.

    • @Lsailor169699
      @Lsailor169699  8 років тому +1

      +Denzil Lyons The real decision should be based on how many miles you have on the car. Over a 100K? Might as well go for the whole thing since the pump (and other things) might go out and you don't want to go in twice. Best, The Sailor.

    • @denzillyons1897

      +Lsailor1 Thamk you, point very well taken....by the way i have the 2003 model so its well over 100k. it also seems for this model the filter and pump are inseparable.....Maybe if I can explain my problem you may be able to guide me further....my car would start and idles for a couple seconds and then shuts off. This started occurring after I took a jump start and my fuel was also very low ...i have since replaced the battery and topped up the fuel but the problem persists

    • @Lsailor169699
      @Lsailor169699  8 років тому

      +Denzil Lyons Well, to have ignition you need three things: (1) spark, (2) air and (3) fuel. Since the first two appear to be there, it can only be the fuel. You need to check the fuel pump. Two ways to do that. First, disconnect the line (AFTER relieving the fuel pressure!!) that goes to the carbs. You then need to know what the specs are for fuel pressure for that vehicle. Hook up a PSI gauge to the line and see if you are getting what you need. The second way is the to just see if it is pumping at all. Disconnect the line at the fuel pump assembly (after relieving the fuel pressure) and see if it pumps. Can also check if it pumps all the way to the carbs. The only problem is you don't know if you are getting the right pressure. Of course, all this is dangerous with fuel going everywhere. May just want to bite the bullet and take it to Hyundai. Best, The Sailor.

    Hey Lsailor1. After you swapped out the filter, did you have to do anything to prime the fuel back through the line? I swapped out the filter, but now the fuel won't leave the pump. The pump whirs up and such. Gas goes through the reservoir, the filter, and out of the filter, don't know if the pump is doing it's duty though. Gas never comes in contact with the fuel line. Anything else I may be missing? I'm guessing a loose line or the pump turns on but not putting out enough pressure. Without a car because I wanted to do what my maintenance manual said :(

    • @Lsailor169699
      @Lsailor169699  8 років тому

      +Tyler Upton Thanks for watching my video Tyler! I also had a problem with the filter not fitting right and the pump working, but no gas pressure. I bit the bullet and just bought an entire fuel pump assembly for about $130. If you have a Sonata with over 100K miles, you need to ask yourself the question "What other parts of the fuel assembly may go out?" When I put the new assembly in, I turned it over immediately; no priming. BTW, if you get the entire fuel pump assembly, MAKE SURE that the top of it is EXACTLY like your current one. Been there. Best, The Sailor.

    Thanks for posting the vid, but to anyone else reading/watching be careful. It's not mentioned that the car wouldn't start after this and a whole assembly was ordered after. Googling led me to tons of people with the same problem where after doing this the car won't start. I haven't had my car in over a week and now i've just wasted money and i'm pissed off at it and never want to do anything else on my car again. If it doesn't cost too much more than the whole assembly, just have it done somewhere and save yourself the trouble imo.

      Having a mechanic do it would be ideal but that's only if you have a mechanic you trust. My gf took her car to a local shop after having her clutch pedal occasionally sank to the floor. She'd lose pressure and have to pull it back up with the top of her foot. Of course (they said) you need a new clutch. Granted the car had 80K+ plus miles on the factory Kia clutch but I don't think that was the issue and have heard stories of other folks going over 100K miles on an original clutch. Fast forward...clutch done, flywheel resurfaced and all is well with the world again. Nope! She had the car about a week before it started doing the same thing all over again. They bled the system and that took care of it for another week. Looks like the problem was actually a worn out slave cylinder that I'll have to replace since she parked after we got a newer car it's no longer under warranty. It's a 35 dollar part and some brake fluid. Just wish I would've made it more of a priority back then, could've have saved the clutch (if they even changed it) for another day. Makes you want to do like some of the people on UA-cam and hide cameras on your car to see what they're really doing when they have it. That's a movie I'd pay to see..."The Secret Life of Mechanics."

    • @arthurkirk2100
      @arthurkirk2100 7 років тому

      It is and it's a relatively easy fix which just highlights my frustration with some mechanics. If you're doing the clutch why wouldn't you do the slave cylinder anyway? By the way, very well done video. Our Sonata has 170K and hopefully I'll never have to go through the hassle of changing the fuel filter :)

      Hey Kalikoded, might be a little late since it has been a year by now. But i replaced my fuel filter as well. Didnt start first time. So i took it apart again and saw that the o-ring between the filter and the pump housing was too high. I placed the o-ring correctly and it started after first try. (iginition 3 times on and of to fill the filter with fuel then start). because it was not well placed it did not create a vacuum. hope it helps for other people with this problem at least.

    My Sonata has 200k miles on it, with the original fuel pump (and filter) and it's running fine and gets 30mph on the highway. Who told you that the fuel pumps die at 100k?

      If you are going to do it, I would HIGHLY recommend that you just buy the entire fuel pump assembly and replace it.Remember to get the fuel down in the tank to the lowest possibles level before opening up the access panel and removing it. Best, The Sailor.

    When you cut open fuel filter, you show its all black, it is a charcoal filter. This is why is all black. Called dealer, said it is a class 3 device and have never sold 1, and do not stock this item. Replacement is not required dealer said. Home mechanic can easily damage this unit and having to buy a whole new assy.

      Thanks for watching my video Tommy! You are certainly able to do what you want with your vehicle. I take my info from a Haynes repair manual which says "They should be replaced every 60,000 miles or 72 months." I know what a charcoal filter is and this was not one. It is my contention that the dealers don't want to mess with it because it does require a lot of labor. Happy motoring! Best, The Sailor.
