I saw her with Mandy Pantkin playing Che over 30 years ago. This was back when musicals were affordable and you could get great seats. Can still remember so many amazing scenes. I wanted to see Hamilton and tickets were $300 in Chicago. I saw Camelot with Richard Burton in the 1980's and sat 11th row for $19.50. I don't get why theater isn't affordable for anyone anymore.
The director of the movie changed a couple of lines, in Eva and Magaldi there is a line "No Money, No Class." but he had a lot of respect for Evita, so he changed it to "No Money, No Cash." I assume that's why.
How come in the movie version they changed the lyrics "Is that the extent of your interest in me? It shows how futile acting must be" to "Acting is limiting, the lines not mine. That's no help to the Argentine?
*"Acting is limiting, the lines not mine. That's no help to the Argentine?* That's actually from the original concept album. It was changed to the former for the stage version. The movie decided to use the original lyric.
The stage production, especially the US version, was tweaked to be more critical of the Perons and to paint Eva as an arch manipulator as opposed to 'girl done good'. I think the lyric was tweaked to show her being more interested in self promotion than doing good for Argentina. The film was slightly more sympathetic, partly to reflect the original concept album and partly to get the permission from the Argentine government to film at the Casa Rosada
Original Broadway Cast (Mandy Patinkin, Patti LuPone, et al). I prefer the Concept Cast (at least as far as Che is concerned). I know Che's meant to be a tenor, but Mandy's voice seems a tad *too* light IMO.)
Never mind the harmonies (which aren't that bad IMO), what about those unison F2's for the male chorus? Talk about annoying! Most baritones can't go that low, never mind tenors. WTF is up wth that?
My God, Patti Lupone...her voice is just magnificent! Saw the original cast when I was like 13...I was hooked. Still incredible.
Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin are irresistible. Thanks for posting.
I saw this show when I was 8, and this soundtrack is committed to memory. I can't accept any other recording!
Crystal M I saw it a bit older but agree, this soundtrack is the quintessential and no other has yet to prove muster.
Dude same!!!
One of the most excellent musicals I saw on Broadway...(the original cast)... OUTSTANDING performances by Patti and Mandy!!!
Just listening to Mandy in this is a lesson on proper diction.
Ironic, isn't it? Considering Patti LuPone is notorious for her lack of diction.
musicaltheatergeek79 She certainly lacked proper technique in her early days, but what talent she has!
@@daniellebates6570 In her early days? You know this was 1979, right?
@@mcorby53 and?
Probably my favorite song from the show
The military singing always reminds me of West Side Story... ;)
I wish I had been able to see her in this!!!
The lyrics are perfection:
"No, we wouldn't mind seeing her in Harrod's
But behind the jewelry counter - - not in front"
PotomacDog57 right on
Neo liberalism at it's finest
Didn't say they were. It still applies today, just in subtler ways.
"that isn't funny" gets me every time
(Che:) At the watering holes of the well-to-do
I detect a resistance to
(Aristocrats:) Precisely
(Che:) Our heroine's style
(Aristocrats:) We're glad you noticed
(Che:) The shooting sticks of the upper-class
(Aristocrats:) Give her an inch
(Che:) Aren't supporting a single ass
That would rise for the girl
(Aristocrats:) She'll take a mile
(Aristocrats:)
Such a shame she wandered into our enclosure
How unfortunate this person has forced us to be blunt
No we wouldn't mind seeing her at Harrod's
But behind the jewelry counter, not in front
(Che:) Could there be in our fighting corps
A lack of enthusiasm for
(Army:) Exactly
(Che:) Peron's latest flame
(Army:) You said it brother
(Che:)
Should you wish to cause great distress
In the tidiest officer's mess
Just mention her name
(Army:)
That isn't funny
Peron is a fool, breaking every taboo
Installing a girl in the army H.Q
And she's an actress, the last straw
Her only good parts are between her thighs
She should stare at the ceiling, not reach for the skies
Or she could be his last whore
The evidence suggests
She has other interests
If it's her who's using him
He's exceptionally dim
Bitch! Dangerous Jade
(Aristocrats:)
We have allowed ourselves to slip
We have completely lost our grip
We have declined to an all-time low
Tarts have become the set to know
(Army:)
It's no crime for officers to do as they please
As long as they're discreet and keep clear of disease
We ignore, we disregard
But once they allow a bit on the side
To move to the center where she's not qualified
We are forced to mark his card
She should get into her head
She should not get out of bed
She should know that she's not paid
To be loud but to be laid
Slut! Dangerous Jade
(Che:)
This has really been your year, Miss Duarte
Tell us where you go from here, Miss Duarte
Which are the roles that you yearn to play?
Whom did you sleep ... dine with yesterday?
(Eva:)
Is that the extent of your interest in me
It shows how futile acting must be
(Che:)
Can we assume then that you'll quit?
Is this because of your involvement with Colonel Peron?
(Heavies:)
Goodnight and thank you
(Army:)
She won't be kept happy by her nights on the tiles
She says it's his body, but she's after his files
So get back on to the street
She should get into her head
She should not get out of bed
She should know that she's not paid
To be loud but to be laid
The evidence suggests
She has other interests
If it's her who's using him
He's exceptionally dim
(Aristocrats:)
Things have reached a pretty pass
When someone pretty lower-class
Graceless and vulgar, uninspired
Can be accepted and admired
thank you! this is one of my dearest soundtracks.
Still think it’s one of the best song’s in Evita. Shame it has been removed it seems
I don’t think it has. My theater recently did a production of Evita and this song was in it
@TwilightLover42T amen to that! i was in this show as an aristocrat and the harmonies in the a capella sections were so hard to learn.

Awsome song. I love it!!
@TwilightLover42T ahhhh so were we!! we were called "haughty aristocrats with mincing steps". it made my life.

Ahhh, I see! :-)
Also, it's really cool that Alan Parker has so much respect for Eva Peron. :-) I can definitely tell just by looking at everything in the movie! ^_^
This orchestration is really all over the place...
Are musicals not supposed to be all over the place?
@orcmistress It's the original OBC

Actresses marrying Royalty then complaining about Buckingham Palace, dressed to the nines and doing "charity work." Sounds rather familiar.

Haha I am doing his play and I’m an aristocrat
Same here, i like that i get to sing this song. Although "oh what a circus" looks fun
@TwilightLover42T yer well its not that hard isit tbh xx

These 2 scumbags remind me of Donald Trump, who tho found guilty 2024, will no doubt become El Presidente - as a Canadian I got my own MISERY. PEACE.
