    You have such good knowledge man it’s crazy.. all thru out last summer I was trying to find the “perfect” shooting form with straight elbow and all that but after a while I finally found what works for me and I’ve been practicing with that form since then. I have a little elbow flare but my shot is wet so that’s wassup!!

  • @lucasamoriim5126
    @lucasamoriim5126 3 роки тому +2

    I think the whole point of the tucked elbow thing is just to RAISE your elbow alined with the axis of your shoulder. Most people who haven't refined shooting mechanics shoot with their elbow out of plane with their shoulder. The Dame example exemplifies this perfectly. If you trace a line from his shoulder to his elbow they remain alined through the whole shot, even if his elbow goes out a little. Very subtle but impactful.

    it depends, some ppl have their set point above their right shoulder, like matt bonner or larry bird, so their elbows are straight. if like most ppl, you have the set point in front and above your right eye, of course your elbow has to turn to allow the ball to get to that position. and secondly, most shooters turn their body to the left a bit so their elbow can point at the rim, when your body is facing left but elbow is pointing forward, and turn inward if set point if on right eye, it gives the illusion of chicken wing. in reality, its all about the elbow pointing at the rim, not the eblows' position relative to your body.

  • @2en1th
    @2en1th 2 роки тому +1

    I used to shoot with the elbow completely perpendicular to floor level (my first coach was very old-school and sorta made me do that) but that really limited my capability to go next level: I was only able to release comfortably when wide open and it was extremely difficult to have a straight follow-through when taking an off-dribblee shot after initiating body contacts. I think as long as you feel comfortable with your release and the ball goes straight to the direction that you aim for, you should be good and practice towards keeping the form consistent (unfortunatly I am now having trouble doing that, after changing my form, can use a lot of help here, pls comment below)
    P.S. though difficult, but there were some great shooter/scorer that shot with elbow completely tucked in at high-level competition: check out Dirk, Nash and Yi Jianlian (not great in NBA but was putting big number in FIBA matches). Luka Doncic's elbow is very close to completely tucked in as well, and he compensate that by tilting his body to the sideway, by a lot.

    It’s more of the alignment of finger facing the rim than it is elbow. Keep your finger facing the rim on catch, up through shot and follow through. As for palm shooting please don’t. You miss harder, left and right and you lose accuracy for the added power. Keep everything on finger tips fellas, max control over power.

    I can see why you would conclude that based on the shooters you use as an example. As a coach, and graduate basketball player, I can tell you that you are mistaken when it comes to "tension" on the arm. The tension on the arm you are experiencing is because you haven't yet developed that comfortable range of motion for that arm yet... it takes a long time to build that up. I have that range of motion so that my muscles in my arm and forearm are relaxed while my elbow is perfectly in front of me. Now that tension you speak of I can experience when I attempt to play a violin with my other arm as where the elbow should ideally be I simply don't have the range to even get there so all the muscles in my arm get pretty tight. It's just about developing that flexibility to be relaxed in that appropriate position. I had one season where I couldn't use my left arm due to an injury so I shoot really well single handedly.
    Also another thing to notice is every shooter you pointed out is compensating for their tilted angle by having their other hand on top.
    As a coach I'm still going to teach proper form. Sure, it's fine to develop techniques you can master that aren't proper form for a standard shot. But your best advantage to maximize your efficiency and ease of accuracy is to develop good form with your elbow straight in front of you. If you want to master it any other way, you have to work much harder for it.

    • @LuZu_
      @LuZu_ 5 місяців тому

      hey! interested in getting your two cents on this. This is going to sound wordy with lots of biomechanics jargon:
      Are you able to describe the ranges of motion required to reduce elbow flare (what and how to make more mobile)?
      Intuitively, I’d think increasing your shoulder external rotation would be important here. However, an online sport physio described Steph’s follow through as having adequate internal rotation. I’m not sure how this translates to your shoulder being in max flexion and in front of you.

    • @DanielPClark
      @DanielPClark 4 місяці тому

      @@LuZu_ My recommendation for improving your range of motion for proper form on this is rather simple.
      Start with your arm in the form of a goose neck, with your elbow slightly up so that it can move in front of you (roughly a 45 degree angle down from your shoulder to your elbow) ... this form might be the shape of a number 2 if you're pointing your fingers forward. Once you have this shape next you want to take your shoulder blades (scapula) and do a scap squeeze bringing you shoulder blades together at your spine. While holding that swing your arm in to in front of you. You'll essentially be stretching by bringing your elbow towards your sternum and your scapula towards your spine. This stretches your shoulder muscles and your traps. When you do the stretch start relaxed, arm form first, scap squeeze second, elbow in third, hold stretch 2-3 seconds. Then rest the muscles, reset, and move it around to relax the muscle tension. Repeat this to help yourself also learn the muscle movements.
      Once your mind is familiar with this form add a basketball in and practice shooting one handed with your middle finger pointing to the hoop just after the shot. Repeated practice shooting in this way will help your muscles to become more relaxed with the form. And the key to developing perfect form with your shooting arm is to shoot as if you only had one arm with the elbow always in a straight line under your hand.

    Great video! Recently I saw a picture of me shooting and got a little concerned about my elbow being out. I never had problems with accuracy, felt comfortable shooting and getting my shot off. But still I tried shooting with a straight elbow for a week and never felt even remotely comfortable so I went out looking for answers. I agree with your thinking and this video clarified a lot of doubts I had. First player that comes to my mind that actually shoots with his elbow in and straight hand is James Jones. It's very clear to see in a video where he participates in a 3 point shooting contest.

  • @mosesplaying5781

      Well a lot of the great shooters can shoot straight, but if you’re referring to shooters who actually have a straight “tucked in fully” elbow then yes. There are a few... other than that guys like Harden and more have a slight elbow flare on their jumper.

    I have a question
    So ive always been a very good mid range shooter and im more of a small bouncy guard so when i shoot my mid range shots i jump high its more like a daeshun ruffin type of shot
    But ive never really been too great at threes and ive started seeing success making threes after some changes but now my 3pt shot is so much more different than my mid range shot where its more of like a low elevation damian lillard type shot
    what should i do?

      If i should make my mid range shot more like my 3 pt shot
      Or
      If i should keep it the way it is (which i dont know if i should because the 2 jumpshots are very different from eachother)

    • @user-hz8kt4pw5p
      @user-hz8kt4pw5p 3 роки тому

      Also another thing to consider is im a short guard
      so if i jump high im less likely to get blocked and better off the dribble but takes a lot more energy
      Whereas
      If i jump low its not as tiring but not as good off the dribble and more likely to get blocked

      The elbow flare isn’t something you should try to add.... this videos main purpose is to give you guys some awareness that if you try your best to have a “fully tucked” in elbow but yet it’s not fully tucked, then it’s ok!
