The autotune most likely comes from their and specifically Jesses love for rap and hip hop. It influences him and he wanted to try it out. Just like the mixtape came from their love for hip hop, this did too. It's not permanent, it's just to have fun.

the first time i listened to this was about two years ago. i remember i hated the autotune. but i get it now, i think it fits with this performance. i personally like the studio version of this song better, but this performance has grown on me.
