Probably the most insightful reaction to this song that I have ever seen. Not only musically but lyrically. The childhood comparison was eye opening. Hats off to you sir.
Appreciate you picking my submission and diving in MP. Your insights are spot-on as always. Sometimes it's just nice to hear that you're not the only one battling out there.
I was heavily addicted to painkillers and benzodiazepines for years. Now 4 years sober. Michael is right. The crutch gives what it takes away. Trading one problem for another only complicates your life more and leaves you craving more. Eventually the crutch is the reason you can’t walk at all. Whatever you borrow, you have to pay back… or end up bankrupt. Bite down on the mouthpiece. It’s the only way you’re gonna end up winning.
The wildest part about Jelly Roll is that he came up as a rapper. Dude can RAP rap. He has a 10 minute long freestyle here on UA-cam that's absolutely wild. He also dropped 3? 4? albums with Struggle Jennings, grandson of Waylon Jennings (yes, the Outlaw country LEGEND Waylon)!
Jelly Roll describes his songs as 'therapeutic.' He wants people to connect and feel what he's feeling and singing. He's connecting to a LOT of people, giving them hope that they can rise above their problems. I loved this reaction. I have subscribed.
I love how you don’t just look at the playing, you look at the songwriting and the lyrics. You have to be the greatest youtuber ever. Especially after seeing the pic of you and my other favorite, Keith Urban, last night!
Great reaction, Jelly roll also has a song on rock radio that was #1 for two weeks " Dead Man Walking", he also currently has a country song on the country charts "Son of a Sinner", and he is rapping on a song with Brantley Gilbert that is on the charts " Son of the Dirty South. Jelly is a reformed drug dealer that changed his life. He has a great story and is an incredible artist charting in rock, country, and rap.
That’s a real heavy message man. Everyone has their demons, but no one is a lost cause. Damaged? Yes. But my music always brought me right again (my therapy)…
It’s time I join this community, it’s so much more than just tabs and learning notes, absolutely where i belong. Is the Website the best way to get involved?

You are hands down my favorite creator for so many reasons.....what an authentic reaction video and such a respectful lesson on the music. Props my man.
You are a healer Michael, it's nice to see you analyze a song that gives people a space to think and feel about issues that are hard to speak about openly. The thing he is talking about is our Coping Mechanisms.... When we break habbits/loops there are four stages. The first stage, we are unconsciously unconscious: here we are not aware of the problem. The second stage, we are conciously unconscious: here we see the problem or we are made aware. The third stage: we make ourselves councously councious: here we work on breaking the habbit, some simple reprogramming works here, set a clear image of how you would like to behave, then prepare a plan of action every time the thing you don't want to do comes up, have something else ready to break the habbit. If smoking, everytime you get the urge, go peal a carrot and start munching. Prittey soon we will have reprogrammed the urge for a cigarette into a carrot. And you don't have a problem not eating to many carrots, or do you now? :P The fourth stage: we become unconciously concious: we can put the behavior on auto-pilot because it's now reprogrammed. This works for more or less any behaviour we have, the problem I find sometimes is the first stage when we are not aware of what we are doing or feeling about something, be mindfull here! Love
I have watched all the reaction videos I could find on this and I have to say this was my favorite. The insightfulness on how you got there in the first place and become trapped in the cycle is so real. It is that thing that becomes the reason, instead of the reason. Perfect.
It is indeed the message that you know you needed; I'm weak and then I hear that someone else is too, we aren't alone and music is the bridge, thanks MP.
Wow man thanks for putting a video up of people of today who may not look like it, but are talented as hell in different genres of music. Many people judge by the look of someone vs just listening.
@@Guitargate I wouldn’t want to suggest anything to take away from your online courses. God I just love listening to you talk about songs like this. I learned how to play it while you were talking. Not what I came here for but it happened. Love your videos.
You put everything in such a simple term I don't even know how to play or start to play a guitar but I feel like I can play this song thanks to you best actual music teacher vibes
Life can be like Mike Tyson and beat your a$$... trust me I know... I've heard this song well over a thousand times and it still brings me to tears.. it numbs the pain of life temporarily.. a moment of peace is about 30 dollars.. wake up and rejoin your life wash rinse repeat!
Drake grew up near me, met him a couple times before he got signed. He's such a good guy, and an amazing talent. Hope he someday gets the recognition he deserves.
Thanks for this video, we should talk about this stuff more. I know I'm struggling from time to time, out of a divorce now and moving across the country, but hey I got a guitar and starting your lessons. Getting back to songwriting and poetry to get it out.
Would be cool to see you do something from Andy Timmons. His Electric Gypsy performance dated 6/27/12 would be my pick but there's plenty more to choose from.
MP, love your videos, been a fan for a while now. Sometimes when I listen to the songs raw before you review them I fall in love with them but cant explain why I like the song so much and then BAM! You swoop in and aticulate with words exactly how the song makes me feel. Instead of the words at the end of my toung you explain the feelings at the end of my brain LOL! Anyways, thanks for the time and effort you put into all of your content, cant wait to see what else we discover on this journey called life.
Hi Michael, really enjoyed your heartfelt and inciteful reactionalysis to this incredible performance. I'd also like to introduce you to a guitarist that you're probably unfamiliar with by the name of Danny Gatton. He was called "The greatest unknown guitarist" by Rolling Stone mag, as well as The Humbler and the Telemaster for his mastery of the Fender Telecaster. I've seen many of the greats live (SRV, EC, BB etc) and seeing Danny live (not long before his untimely suicide) was really impressive and worthy of keeping his memory alive. Whether you react or not, please try to experience his greatness. Cheers!
Hey man, I would really appreciate if you did Crooked Teeth by Zach Bryan, kind of bringing back the murder ballad as well as I really liked the guitar in it, seems easy to learn
Oh man,… Oooph,… That song - the simplicity of the melody, the tone and the emotion of his voice - cuts quick and it cuts deep. … It gives me chills. This song reminds me of how easy it is for me to cut myself down. It’s difficult for me to accept myself enough to allow myself to be built up - which is to think of myself in a positive way and be able to accept compliments from others. So this song reminds me of how easy it is to cut myself down and push others away. I’m still very close to where I’ve been, but I’ve made improvements over the last several years.
Watched a few of your videos, man your a great role model to young men just the way you describe how bad things make it seem better, when in reality it doesn’t. Appreciate you. Reaction video idea if you haven’t done it, Something in Orange - Zach Bryan.
I realize this is a guitar channel, but just wanted to give a shout out from a jelly fan. Oh. It’s all minor pentatonic, and you never touch the E. This is a perfect beginner song to sing to a girl lol.
Love your reaction. People live off of temporary fixes just to get by but a band-aid only lasts so long. You eventually have to put a real fix on those real wounds or they will eat at you for the rest of your time. And yes, I am speaking to myself as well and all of human kind. Let's keep holding each other up and helping each other understand ourselves and get through these chapters together. That's the beauty in it, is that we're not alone and we have each other. Culture, religion, race, politic beliefs all get thrown out when it boils down to the human race. Wherever you came from, internally we all endure the same things. We are each other, diversity university. Keep on keeping on my friend.
Part of what helped me quit smoking is that I'd watch people go out on smoke break and stare into the distance, thinking about their problems. I realized the nicotine made them feel better for a minute but the problems were still there. If you don't face the problems, they don't go away.
I like your insights, how ever you -and so many others- seem to don’t understand addiction: most drugs, even nicotine, is made to get addicted to. Starting with them meets a quick point of no return. The music is been played very sweet, the song’s amazing.
Probably the most insightful reaction to this song that I have ever seen. Not only musically but lyrically. The childhood comparison was eye opening. Hats off to you sir.
