In today's video, five vocalists and two violinists have come together to pay tribute to Guru Sri Lalgudi. The piece they have chosen is an especially beautiful, and particularly rare, composition of his - a Jathiswaram in Behaag. This is a compositional form dominated by swaras or notes, with merely a line of sahitya or lyrics. Sri Lalgudi's genius can be seen in the way he evokes the imagery of a musical conversation where every phrase seems to be a response to the preceding one.
The disciples participating in this "conversation" have a connection with their guru that spans the decades - some studied with him in the early 80s and 90s, while others did so in the 2000s. What they have in common is the pivotal influence he has had on their music and on their lives.
Mangala Karthik is a vocalist from Bangalore and a graded artiste of the All India Radio. She began learning from Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman in 2000, and currently trains under Sangeeta Kalacharya Vidushi Neela Ramgopal.
M.A. Jyothi is a violinist and vocalist based in Mysore, and is the grand-daughter of scholar-composer Sri Yoganarasimhan. She is a graded AIR artiste for vocal music as well as the violin. She spent a year in the mid-90s in Chennai learning from Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman.
Dr. Padmini Gopalakrishnan holds a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, and is currently Senior Director at Xilinx, Hyderabad. She considers herself fortunate to have learnt music from Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman beginning in 1993, and cherishes the blessings of all her other gurus as well (Smt. Jayalakshmi Sarangapani, Sri Neti Srirama Sarma, Sri Lakshminarayanan and Sri Sankaran).
Vignesh Moorthy is a graded artiste of the All India Radio, and considers himself fortunate to have learnt vocal music with Lalgudi Sir, as well as Padmasri Parasala B. Ponnammal and his parents.
    A. Narayanan is a student of Vidwan Sri S.P. Ramh, himself a senior disciple of Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, for over 25 years. He is a concert vocalist as well as a Chartered Accountant. He cherishes the manner in which Lalgudi Sir has provided inspiration and guidance to him, including from the very outset when he directed him to his guru Sri S.P. Ramh.
N.V. Babu Narayanan is an A-top and Grade 1 violinist with All India Radio, and son of mridangam vidwan Prof. Mavelikara Velukutty Nair. He is grateful for his tutelage under Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, and especially relishes old concert memories of his guru Lalgudi Sir playing with Sri Palghat Raghu (his father's guru). and a disciple of Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman.
Vijaya Voleti is a veteran of the IT industry and lives in New Jersey. She is also one of Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman's early disciples, having studied with him in the early 80s.
All these students have recollections of their guru's love for nature, his ability to find joy in the serene woods, and above all, his infinite ability to find musical inspiration in all things beautiful.
