I knew the first time I read the books - Harry's overall interest in Sports and lack of interest in anything else that didn't help him, also his attitude at times.
It was weird for me to realize that - had I been a student at Hogwarts - I actually wouldn’t have gotten along with the main characters? As a teen I hated sports and pranks made me cry, so basically the entire Weasley family and co would have terrified me.
@@tgiacin435 yeah. In my most recent reread (I cover the whole series like once a year) I was facepalming so much at his, for lack of a better phrase, lack of survival instincts.
The thing is, that’s not entirely correct. Towards the end of the battle in the books there’s a third group that arrive to help defend the castle, explicitly including some of the Slytherins and Ravenclaws that left alongside adults (although it is a very small and easy to miss mention)
@ just after Voldemort attacks the school a second time, before he realises his spells aren’t killing anyone and he and Harry duel, a large amount of the people that left returned with reinforcements in the book. It isn’t shown in the film sadly.
@garethmorton5620 yes, but there's no mentioned of Slytherin. In fact, when Lucius asked Voldemort permission to look for his son, Voldemort said Draco probably dead or befriend Harry because he didn't join Voldemort with the rest of Slytherins.
Can we talk about Harry’s growth from the fifth book to the sixth book? In the fifth book, Harry is embarrassed to be sitting with Neville and Luna. And honestly, he was a 15 year old kid dealing with a lot of PTSD, he wasn’t going to be the most reasonable and kind. In the sixth book however, when Harry is sitting with Luna and Neville on the train again, he is asked by a popular girl if he wants to sit with her. Instead of feeling sad that he was sitting with Neville and Luna, he actually told the popular girl “they’re friends of mine” and he willingly stayed to sit with Neville and Luna, and told them that they were cool when Luna said “people expect you to have cooler friends”. Can we talk about that for moment?
very similar to James who was “an arrogant toe rag” according to Lily until later years at Hogwarts when he grew up and became a good man. Obviously harry faced much more hardship than james but a similar social growth
@@JjjjjjVvvvv-ny6od I don't disagree, buuuut.... Cho was a girl he had been crushing on for over a year & older than Harry. Romilda Vane was a random 4th year. Still think he grew.
not even just one girl, a bunch. Hermione mentioned that a GROUP of girls were discussing how to give Harry a love potion in the bathroom. Bro was popular af after he became THE CHOSEN ONEEEE
Tbf I think Slythering house suffer from a self fulfilling prophecy. If you say a person is bad before knowing them you basically put them on the position of doing bad things. Voldemort only took advantage of the situation.
Agreed. Everyone clearly expects Slytherin not to help before they even ask during the final battle. And they're in an awkward position anyway, as many of them would be fighting their own family members if they agreed. That's a lot to ask of any kid. I actually think sending them all to the dungeons would have spared them the need to make that choice, and might have been kinder. Imagine going into battle and not knowing if you're about to mortally injure your own dad. Even if you hated his guts, that would be hard to live with.
Exactly, The Wizarding World literally labels 1/4 of their population as evil and bad from the moment they get sorted into Slytherin. What do they think is gonna happen.
Playing devil's advocate on "Harry's a dumb, popular jock" -- the one thing he isn't is an extrovert. He isn't Oliver who loves and breathes Quidditch, he isn't the Weasley twins who have been an exemplary beater duo extraordinaire since at least their 3rd year together and are very much popular... Harry's infamous, but he has a close circle of friends and doesn't speak much. Doesn't really dpeak much in class unless called upon (the big exception being standing up to Umbridge in 5th year, which shocked everyone), doesn't interact much with other classmates unless provoked.. he doesn't even seem too talkative with Ron and Hermione -- they're the incessant chatterboxes according to him.. Harry's actually more popular in a "quiet, brooding, mysterious" kind of way, I think. He is a jock, though. And he can be dumb..but his perfect timing usually makes him appear clever enough that I dont think its immediately obvious. He isn't what your mind would immediately picture as a dumb popular jock...I've always liked that analysis but it's always needed the caveat, i think
I’d say just bc he’s quieter and doesn’t like always being the center of attention (he’s fine with it in Quiddich, but not if Rita Skeeter is grilling him about his love life) doesn’t mean he’s an introvert. Harry is someone who can spend all day/night with other people (a small group of chosen people, but still other people nonetheless-Ron, Hermione, the ENTIRE Weasley clan, Hagrid and Fang, Neville and Luna, Sirius when he could). A true introvert would need more regular breaks from people, even his best friends. As an introvert myself (who seems very extroverted, btw), a part of me DIES when I think about going to a boarding school and being surrounded by people 24/7, unable to even have a bedroom or bathroom to myself. Harry was never really concerned about finding time for privacy unless he absolutely needed it-like when his scar hurt/he was having visions or he felt ganged up on by half the student body. I have a few friends who seem very introvert-coded, bc the are quiet and reserved and more observational, but they love being around their chosen families 24/7 and don’t ever feel a need to ‘escape.’ They feel very similar to Harry to me, even though Harry is more outspoken, doesn’t feel awkward getting called on in class or having to approach different types of people, freely chooses to hang out in the common room regularly to do homework and socialize, and is only introspective to a certain degree. Harry seems to gain energy from others, rather than feel drained by it, so that’s why I’d say he’s an extrovert.
@lifeoutsidecomfortzone As an introvert myself, I think we have to consider that there are many degrees of introversion. It's a "spectrum". I can take myself as an example: I seem very introvert at first, mostly because I'm shy and because of my hobbies, but I'm actually quite close to extroversion, apparently. I know people that are much more introverted than me. And yet, I'm still an introvert. My way of absorving and processing informations is that of introverts. Also, I once heard someone describe introversion and extroversion this way: extroversion is "cognitive reactivity", while introversion is "cognitive proactivity". The meaning is that extroverts have an immediate response to the inputs of the environment (they passively absorb any input while reacting to them), while introverts have to process the information before reacting to it (they first have to sort that input out, then they can react to it). That's why for introverts being exposed to too many new inputs (like in social situations, especially when you're not among close friends) is very tiring, while for extroverts it's energizing. Still, extroverts need some alone time too, after a while. It's not only introverts that need to recharge alone. My opinion on Harry: he could be both an introvert or an extrovert, I can't tell for sure. But considering that he always surrounds himself with close friends, that he avoids overly social and chaotic situations, and that he actually quite enjoys some alone time, I'd say that calling him an introvert isn't completely wrong.
@@yakirfrankoveig8094 I don't know XD Well, nature is complicated, so I guess that's the reason. Edit: but a spectrum is simpler than a dodecahedrum or a paraboloid, so nv
@@morganhouston1637 it's from when the hallway was turned into a swamp. A "punt" is a long thin boat you push forward with a long stick...basically means he was ferrying them across
That first one is so on point. I had forgotten how popular Harry was because the movies make Harry look like the socially excluded guy. Edit: We cook rice without a rice cooker in Brazil. It's very possible. You just need a cooking pot, a lid, water, and fire.
@@sweetsummerchild8156 Glutinous or sticky rice, which a lot of East Asians eat, is a bit difficult to make without a rice/pressure cooker because it's steamed, not boiled. Even the South Indian red rice I eat has such a long cook time I've never seen my mom make it without a pressure cooker. It can be boiled and drained, but I don't think you can do that with glutinous rice. Something like basmati would 100% be doable with just a pot tho
He is a popular jock indeed! Just because his dad was more of a typical jock, doesn't mean Harry isn't one. I would argue that Draco is actually less popular than Harry - he gives mad bully energy.
I think the difference is, that while James loved being a jock, Harry didn't lol. He fits all the characteristics, but in the end, he never wanted to be popular, he just wanted to be his introvert self in peace with his two little friends
@@sweetsummerchild8156 exactly, no one in any other house really backs Draco like that, girls from other houses don't pay him any attention like that. Book Draco kind of fits the archetype of a bully and all his cronies the more I think about it.
I think a huge difference to " the typical jock" is also Harry's upbringing and his bullying family at home, where he is treated very badly and his self worth is maybe not the best. That makes him kind of continually amazed by the wizarding world and how well he is treated there.
My hot take: People are projecting. The reader identifies as an ostracized nerd so they imagine Harry as being just like them. No popular jocks are reading the books. They are too busy with their social lives to do that much reading.
One of my biggest Harry Potter hills that I will die on is that one tiny change could have done SO much for helping Slytherin house be more nuanced and that is to make Dumbledore a Slytherin. And I'm not saying right from the start, I'm thinking of just taking out the line where Hermione knows what house Dumbledore is in and instead having Harry ask Ron "what house is Dumbledore in" and having Ron be like "uhh idk but it's got to be Griffindor right?" And then just let that be the assumption the whole series UNTIL the scene where Harry dies and sees Albus and have there be a line where Harry's just exasperated at Slytherin house and then Dumbledore's like "Harry didn't you know I was a Slytherin?" I think it would have done so much to help nuance for it and also honestly makes more sense for Dumbledore's character to be a Slytherin rather than a Griffindor Anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk, rant over
@@elisabethwilliams2406 ok so this would be a very valid point I feel if Dumbledore was more... clean-cut? In fanon people have analysed his questionable decisions to death, but even in canon we dive into his background with Grindlewald and how it took his sister dying to wake him up. I think Dumbledore as a Gryffindor is like Pittigrew Lite, a reminder that not all Gryffindors are righteous agents of justice.
I've always thought his conversation with Harry - that Harry ended up in Gryffindor not Slytherin because he asked to be there - may have been drawn from Dumbledore's own experience. Dumbledore - especially in his youth - had more Slytherin traits than Harry ever did. If he didn't end up there I can only imagine he didn't want to. Maybe his parents wouldn't have approved? Or maybe he changed as he grew up, and can see now how easily he could have fitted into another House. Leading to his comments about how he sometimes thinks "we sort too soon". He could have been a Slytherin, and I'd be surprised if he didn't know it.
ooo excellent points all around in this comment and replies!! I wish Harry’s main friend group of Ron, Hermione, Neville, Luna, and Ginny had had members from all the houses, it would’ve been so much more of an interesting dynamic if Harry had a friend who was a slytherin
If we set aside the different media types, Slytherin as a house is still misunderstood. The best way to get people in bigoted (and often abusive) households to become less bigoted is for them to spend time with the group they're supposed to hate. That can be in person, or it can be through media. The Slytherin kids are isolated from their peers because everyone hates them starting from age 11, and any known non-purebloods are bullied from both sides (like Snape). That leaves media. The wizarding world doesn't have public libraries, and Hogwarts doesn't seem to have any fiction books. Movies aren't a thing in the wizarding world, and wizarding music is accessed through magical means. So the only ways Slytherins interact with non-purebloods is in competition and by being bullied. Of course they aren't going to betray their parents for that! Especially when there seems to be no foster care or CPS system in the wizarding world. Where exactly would they go to escape abusive magical parents?! We see, at least in the books, many Slytherins who are not all bad, or at least who realize what their parents are doing is bad. I firmly believe Draco sent Dobby to warn/protect Harry in book 2, and he canonically lied to protect Harry in book 7. And Regulus Black became a Death Eater, and used that information to steal one of Voldy's horcruxes, which got him killed. Both of those are very Slytherin ways to rebel. The house has problems, yes. But those problems are made much worse by the Hogwarts system as a whole. (I know this is a lot. I just think it should be noted.)
Thanks for point the media!!! People forget also, HP events happen also in the 90s!! Media wasnt like these days!! And in the mágicas world?? Ha! Representation matter, and in the context of the books we are already biased day 1 cause the only info Harry has about slytherin its "they are bad". If Harry was so blind in info, i cant imagine slythering kids being bullied day one in Howards, that only reinforcers ecerything their pureblood beliefs.
While I am not a Slytherin, I know one of their main attributes is ambition, and clever (clever and smart are NOT the same thing) (also icr the last one). Anyway, both of those things are good things, but everyone else seems to forget that!
@@alexeben2902 I would argue that Regulus's final act was very Hufflepuff. His catalyst to action was a house elf, the embodiment of home, work, & humility. He gave his life for the humblest person. He got no material gain & expected no credit.
Draco didnt sent Dobby (J.K. Rowling already answered that question) and if Dobby were sent by Draco then he didn’t have to punish himself as it was an order from household that he’s supposed to obey & serve. Draco always believed his parents were right and raised to believed that he’s superior with so much prejudice against non pure blood wizards, magical creatures, muggles etc AND he ALL believed it to be good, right & true until Voldemort came back and saw the 1st time what he’s actually supporting.. what his parents are supporting and head his doubts. He is clearly not happy or okay with it but before that happened he was. Draco was pretty cruel before book 6 & 7 .. he loved everything that would hurt Harry, Ron or Hermione Regulus Black also didn’t became a death eater to gain information about Voldemort that he then would use against him, NO, Sirius himself said that he at first supported Voldemort and thought he has the right ideas till he joined & got cold feet.. once he saw the cruelty he changed his mind and rebelled against him
I always figured the houses reflected someone’s approach to survival/how they view their role in the greater community. Gryffindor = would rather die than let others die in their place/place priority on others to the point it deprioritises their own self worth. Ravenclaw = knows there’s a logical/reasonable solution to any conflict and they will find it. Practically approach everything. Basically the ones who know Santa isn’t real but only tell that to people they don’t like. Hufflepuff = work with others / use their social skills to barter for survival, basically the kid in class who always finds the peace or manages to make people relax in meetings. Slytherin = prioritises making sure they’re alive because you can’t help anyone if you’re dead. Flip side of gryffindor. Will help others but not to the point of devaluing their own self worth.
Nah Slytherin would be great and has good attributes EXCEPT of the cunning part! Slytherins are known for rather saving their own ass, always putting themselves 1st and throwing others (even their own friends) under the bus for their own benefit. That’s the only bad thing about Slytherin - the cunning - like Rowling the author said „ambition but to which prize?“ That’s why Slytherin brought up so many dark horrible wizards & witches - they were filled with pride & prejudice (also one of Slytherins characteristics) and willing to do sacrifices to achieve their goals even if it’s gonna cause harm & destruction to others. Slytherins are willing to go far lengths to achieve their means even if it’s on the expense of others.. hurting others. One of Slytherins main characteristics is AMBITION but that paired with cunningness isn’t a good thing as that means they are willing to manipulate & use people for their own goods which is why Dumbledore would’ve for in Slytherin as well. He was willing at first to overthrow the muggles for „the greater good“ with his boyfriend lover Grindelwald
I think one of the biggest reasons we think of Harry as a nerd & outcast is because that's how he's first Presented to us. When he was in muggle school he was a prime target for violent bullies, had no friends, & dressed weird. He was picked last for teams (admittedly, not because he was bad). He takes some pride in his marks(grades), he describes them as "not bad," but in an understatement way. His position in the wizarding world is very different & he is more of a popular jock, but that's not our first impression.
There’s this fanfic that got Harry to realize that he was never popular (like Cedric), he was just super famous. Like, people never approached him for high fives and small talk much (except for quidditch), and stuff-Im not explaining this well lmao. But anyways I will now die on this hill for this hc.

Regarding cultural differences in the translations: I grew up reading the German versions first and as English is my second foreign language I had actually read the (first five) books in French as well before finally being able to read the English originals. I always loved to go on the hunt for the little differences. In the German version, Molly sends Ron and Harry homemade Christmas biscuits/cookies instead of fudge. Because we just LOVE our homemade Christmas biscuits, but fudge in general used to be a rather obscure sweet that has only gained more popularity in the last ten years or so. HOWEVER the German books did stick with the original name of the minister of magic. Cornelius Fudge. Imagine my utter confusion when I first stumbled upon a sign with the word "fudge" in a specality sweet shop. Eight year old me just could not grasp what the minister from Harry Potter had to do with those... things.
I also grew up with the german version. It was always kind of funny to notice that they changed some names, but not all. The main characters names stayed the same but for ex. Hermines cat is called Krummbein (meaning crooked leg), which is kind of like crookshanks, but in German. Then Rita Skeeter became Rita Kimmkorn in german. Both names don't mean anything specific, so I guess it was more about what it sounded like.
My theory on theater kids in Hogwarts: theyre the muggleborn kids in the frog choir. Choir kids who love muggle musicals and Shakespeare but cant play theater
Firstly, thank you for this and you are awesome. Secondly, I think you are even more awesome for referencing the Star Wars EU as a valid version of that canon. Lastly, I love all your points about Slytherin and how we look at things with more nuance as we grow up. Looking back, I would argue that Slytherin became a large self fulfilling prophecy largely due to the indifference of people like Dumbledore. Therefore I am going to go on my own small rant. Please bear with me. Snape is my prime example. What we learn about his childhood during the Occlumency lessons in OOTP shows an abused child, firstly by his Muggle father (who his witch mother fails to protect him from, but that is a whole other essay) and then his mother indoctrinating him with her own anti-muggle biases, largely due to the abuse that she has suffered at his hands. He then goes to school. Now either the school doesn't know about what is going on at home (which makes him the poster child for the importance of home visits), or they just don't care (which with Dumbledore, I mean...). He is then separated from the one positive part of his life (Lily) and put into Slytherin, which will likely make everyone else hate him on principle, and be filled with at least some people that the teachers must know are going to have a negative influence. Thus you have a child who is abused, vulnerable and desperate for love, affection and stability, exclusively surrounded by people who could charitably be called a less than ideal influence, and in some form of siege mentality where all the other houses hate him. Naturally he will latch on to the people he is surrounded by in order to feel a sense of belonging/to receive affection; as an aside you can use this same point to argue that his love for Lily wasn't necessarily romantic but he just was desperately attached to the first comforting presence (her) after a traumatic event (his childhood), which is a classic interrogation technique. Thus you have a child who will do anything in order to feel accepted, and when this reaches it's natural conclusion a la Death Eater, you have Dumbledore et al making shocked Pikachu faces that he hasn't miraculously turned out all sweetness and light. When you look at the contrast (Harry) who has also suffered terrible abuse and trauma as a child, but has then been brought into a loving and nurturing environment (Gryffindor, the Weasleys and the Burrow, McGonagall, etc), despite everything he turns out OK. Now imagine that same situation, but he doesn't have everyone looking out for him, he is placed in a house everyone despises on principle, he is physically unattractive, he receives no special treatment from his teachers, he isn't popular, he doesn't get a surrogate family to replace his awful one, etc. Now, based on that information is his character and thus behaviour and plot progression going to pan out the same way. Ultimately if the senior staff (which is dominated by members of the other three houses) can't see this coming then they are too stupid to be let out without a minder. And if they can see it coming, do nothing, and then have the gall to criticise how these kids turn out then they go far beyond complicity, and into something I can't find an adequate word for. Alright, rant over. Sorry, that went on longer than I planned. To reiterate, you're awesome.
0:28 Harry is the popular kid. Oliver wood is the jock. Hermione is the nerd. Luna is the weird one. Ron is the best friend. Ginny is the popular kids girl friend. Neville is the one who forgets everything.

By all tests and in general by character I am a Slytherin, but I would ask the hat to sort me into a Hufflepuff. The kitchen is next to the living room. They teach the same everywhere. While others there compete and are engaged in achievements (from time to time they also get injured) - calmly study in a pleasant atmosphere and socialize.
I read the book in elementary school and I low key HATED Ron and Harry for how they mooched off Hermione’s hard work because I was literally THAT GIRL who several classmates only made friends with so they could copy my homework. And then those two had the audacity to bully Hermione to her face for being caring too much about school and behind her back complain about her being a nerd or being an activist. Like shut up dummies, no one else needs a smart friend to pass their classes, if not for Hermione they would have been held back a year or two. Hermione was smarter, more hard-working, and kinder and she deserved better friends. I also think she was was the bravest of the trio and the only reason the other two come off as more courageous is that they were to stupid to realize how close they were to dying half the time. Bravery and lacking a self preservation instinct are not the same thing.
okay i get your point about people being your friend to copy your homework(cause i was that person) buttttt......Ron and Harry IN the books also praise hermione many times for helping them with homework and also in the books harry and ron teases hermione not bullys her.(Someone who bullys her is Draco Malfoy).Like i'll be slightly annoyed if my smart friend did better than me and she was being obvious about it(Not saying hermione is THAT girl, but she did show off her perfect coat buttons in transfiguration when ron is struggling with a broken wand) Also in the books hermione is not only the smart one .The trio is smart in their own ways(Unless you watch the movies where hermione does 99.99 of everything smart)
I’m sorry but the trio were all brave in their own ways. Harry willingly chose to die so that his friends could be saved. Yes, I know that he would’ve been dead without Hermione, but still, Harry was brave enough to actually fight Voldemort face to face TWICE. Also Harry and Ron praised Hermione a LOT. It’s not like they were both being Dracos to her all the time.
@@JjjjjjVvvvv-ny6od ok I just got two very similar replies minutes apart, I’m going to address both. I never said that Ron and Harry never praise Hermione. They do. But they “tease” her an awful lot and to the point that it messes with her self esteem. For example, when she doesn’t tell them that Krum asked her to the ball, she doesn’t tell her friends because she knows they’ll react badly instead of just be happy for her. In Book two, when she has that disastrous cat poly juice transformation, she’s afraid they’ll make fun of her AND THEY DO. This is after she spent a month risking expulsion to make the potion he never could have made on his own in order to help him. This is also a bravery point for Hermione. Risking expulsion to steal the ingredients and make the potion was brave. But back to Harry and Ron. Do Ron and Hermione ever make fun of Harry for being so obsessed with quidditch? No. Does Hermione give Ron crap for being nervous about his first match? No. She’s his biggest cheerleader. When Harry wins a match, the trio have a party for him and the team. But when Hermione is proud of her magical or academic accomplishments, she’s showing off and making the other two feel bad about their insecurities. It’s at this point that I’ll point out that Hermione can barely even summon a broom to her hand she’s so bad at flying, but when the boys do well in quidditch, she just cheers them on instead of throwing a fit about her own inadequacies. My gripe with Harry and Ron bullying Hermione, and I maintain that it was bullying, is that they are happy to exploit the benefits of her hard academic work and in the next moment ask her for help. Usually she agrees, but in the event she doesn’t, they gripe and whine until she does. They flatter her ego and make excuses until she does their homework for them including writing essays for them. Which means that in addition to writing her own essay, Hermione would be writing two more and it’s usually because the boys just don’t want to or they find the subject boring or they’d rather be playing quidditch. It’s the definition of weaponized incompetence. My final point is this. It’s clear that part of the reason Hermione is so motivated to excel at school is that she is muggle born and it’s an insecurity. The people at school are the only people in her life who understand her as a witch and she wants to prove her worth. She always would have been a nerd but her insecurities take it to the next level. People, including her friends and teachers, frequently cite her magical talent as the source of her success. And she is talented. But she also works her butt off. It’s cannon in the books that she works harder, studies more, takes more classes than anyone in her year. Had she not been part of Harry’s “it’s the spring semester, time for a Voldemort side quest that messes up finals” drama, Hermione likely would have continued to use the time turner after 3rd year to take extra classes. She’s talented, but the foundation of Hermione’s success is a work ethic that was partial born of insecurity and it is the number one thing that her two best friends make fun of her for. And so much so that she often downplays her own skills and triumphs and deflects praise with praise of her own friends. Hermione might be a sore loser when she plays chess with Ron, but she doesn’t belittle his skill. She’s afraid to ride a broom but she doesn’t make fun of Harry for being a dumb jock. But Harry and Ron make fun of Hermione for being a academic even though though they know she’s insecure about being muggle born. Even though they, by their own claims, would not have passed several classes had it not been for Hermione letting them cheat off her work or helping them study. And the bonus is that Hermione has saved both Harry and Ron and several of Ron’s family member’s lives multiple times. And yes, I know they both save her life too, but they don’t save her life using skills that she made fun of them for. Hermione saved their lives using the same nerdiness that they bullied her for for the better part of a decade. Hermione deserved better friends and the especially sad part is that I think that Ron and Harry were perfectly capable of being better friends had they simply chosen to be.
@@missanthropy6174 on this term I agree with you completely though you got a few points slightly incorrect Harry and Ron did not make fun of her when she polyjuiced into cat. They visited her everyday and when term started they also gave her each day's homework Hermione only usually checked harry and Ron's homework pointed out mistakes.Even when Ron's homework was splaterred with ink or when nearly all the essay has a bunch of spelling errors in it,she fixed it but encouraged them to try doing their own homework Nobody is perfect but Comparing the goods of harry and Ron's friendship with hermione with the bad, there more good than bad
@@missanthropy6174 At the same time that I get what you mean I also think you're so wrong about Harry and Ron. Yes they could be mean with Hermione sometimes (something I don't think they realized they were), but they were also so obviously good friends to her. They never made fun of her after the pollyjuice fail, they were actually there for her the whole time making her company and updating her with the classes. Hermione was probably more worried about Ron's reaction about Krum, as we saw that Harry just didn't care about who she was dating. Harry specially was always there for Hermione. After Ron kisses Lavender in front of all the Gryffindor common room, the first thing Harry thought was about Hermione, and he was there for her. The trio loved each other and were willing to die for one another. They were all incredibly brave in their own ways and not recognizing this is just wrong. Ron, even though yes, he teased her a lot, was also really defensive of her, everytime someone would talk trash about Hermione, Harry had to hold him back so he wouldn't commit murder lol, most notable scene being in Prisoner of Azkaban when Snape called Hermione a "know it all" and Ron argued with him infront of the whole class. And btw, Hermione wasn't a perfect friend as well, Hermione definitely had a fault in Ron's low self esteem. And this is coming from someone who also deeply relates to Mione.

Fun fact about the Hebrew version of Harry Potter books - instead of Dumbledore offering McGonagall lemon sherbets in the prologue of book 1, in Hebrew he offers her krembo, which is a dome-shaped Israeli fluffy marshmallow treat with chocolate coating and a cookie at the bottom. We only have it in winter for some reason as it's considered a winter replacement for ice-cream, which imo is really stupid and we should have it all year round lol. Also, the inferius (the walking dead Harry fights off in the crystal cave in book 6) are in Hebrew called chaizalim (חייז"לים), which is a combination of the words 'chai' (alive) and 'zal', which is the acronym for 'zichrono livracha', which translates to 'may his memory be a blessing', which is the equivalent of RIP in English. There are more fun stuff like that, but I can't think of any others right now and I need to sleep lol Goodnight! 😘
oh so cool, I love hearing how the books are translated in other languages!! (also I LOVE krembo, I’ve only tried it once and I’ve been wishing since then I could buy it in the US 😭😂)
haha it was at UC Berkeley! they have student taught classes that you can get actual class credit for so this was an English class that was offered, it was so much fun!
When US users were banned from the platform, TikTok enjoyed a graceful 12 hours with very little to no bullying. It was a great relief for content creators with a visible handicap. The platform felt half-empty, but 80% more positive and polite. Then US accounts were unbanned from TikTok, and the usual bullying returned. A social media permanently banning USA users would encounter a certain success, there's a market for it, the 12h ban proved it forever.
I saw somewhere that the sorting isn’t done based on your fundamental goodness but on how you see magic. Slytherin sees magic as a secret weapon they must protect, Gryffindor sees magic as protection and safety, Ravenclaw sees magic as part of the world and something that can lead to new revelations and Hufflepuff sees magic as a gift that they should share for the better of the world. Idk I just really like that idea
For anyone who has issues with the spine of their book breaking or splitting, you can use Elmer's clear jell glue to repair it. Work it in between the layers of the spine and use your fingers or thumb to make sure the glue gets to the middle and not just on the ends. You can also glue a narrow strip of paper to each page at the book spine where a break is.
I blame the director of TGOF who went for the cheap gag of Harry and Ron struggling to get dates. Like sure, the most famous wizard in the world, top athlete at the school who saves the world every other term is really gonna strike out with the ladies. Come on.
I think that draco malfoy has a lot to do with slytherin rebranding. The moment fangirls saw tom felton in the 3rd movie everyone was like Oh poor boy he is misunderstood, his father didnt raise him right . Also another impact on slytherin rebranding was made by the trend of preffering villains as favourites over heroes ,as some ppl like their fav characters to be edgy , mystical and "cool" rather than "goody goody two shoes "
13:26 wait but you can cook rice without a rice cooker so the trouble from the original short does not exist. The only thing to do is to tell the professors that a large group of people want rice
100% agree! Wearing round specs doesn't make him a nerd. He was a poor jock, but still a jock. His dad was the rich jock. And he was popular af. How is that even a question?
yh when she started the video i was like duhh..he is obviously a jock lol. I dunno what fans are thinking. Of course I have never really thought of Harry as a "jock",like the word itself.(i guess i just had the 'idea' of it). But yh if i were to put him in the typical american social high school class stystem he is. In fact the first thing i thought was Harry isnt a nerd it is kinda Hermione that is lol
I loved the harry potter books, but was disappointed Slytherin didn't have more of a redeeming arch. Just like a few random Slytherin cameos fighting alongside the others in the final battle and Draco choosing more of a side at the end like throwing Harry a wand at a critical moment. In addition I was disappointed the weasley's car didn't have a quick cameo just drive by running down a death eater about to hex a Weasley then disappearing back into the forest. And the giant squid! Could you imagine a little scene where some minor characters are cornered by a death eater near the lake and suddenly tenticles appear, slap the death eater's wand away and throw him across the lake before patting one of the student's on the head and dipping back into the water.
Harry Potter is not a nerd. Nerds usually are way more invested in the magical world than Harry was. Also, the amount of times Harry had to let Hermione do his homework for him does not look like the behaviour of a nerd, either. 18:54 In Danish that song was also changed to a parody of a Danish Christmas song. We also had the issue of a mistranslation: Lemon sherbert, a hard candy, was translated to lemon sorbet, an ice cream. As one of my friends pointed out: "Dumbledore must have some pretty sticky pockets." 22:53 Buying the UK edition of Goosebumps was pretty jarring, because they change wording too. Seeing a boy I know is American talk about a "bloke" is so weird.
Oh my god Mikayla, this video has my inner Potterhead tingling with joy! These opinions on the Harry Potter books are so well explained; I can't help but agree with them! I was wondering if you could make more of your hilarious skits on Percy Jackson and Harry Potter (Book vs. movies preferably)! My favorite one of yours was the Dumbledore book vs. movie video. "HARRY DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE" Thank you so much for this video! Sincerely, one of your greatest fans, Zoya! (:
Helllloooooo wow I’m so early ! Harry’s not a nerd and not a textbook jock and it’s even more uncertain because of how he looks but like your saying he’s personally and status is completely different in the books and movies .
I literally love you, Mikaila. I'm a Slytherin sorted when it was Pottermore and had a personality crisis 'cause i couldn't understand why lmafo. So i took the homework of reanalyzing every slytherin related thing and the psicology behind every, like , EVERY house and characters in both, books and movies, and concluded mostly everything you said in here, then i realized my "second" house is ravenclaw so it makes, to me, a lot of sense what you said. I was like "YES! YEEEESSS!!!" during the video and laughed a lot! I really love your content. ♡
Loved these! Live discussing little things of stories that seem unimportant but makes the difference or just how someone interpreted one specific scene or character or dialogue. Reminded me of me when I rant to my gf about this miniscule thing in the entire book.
i think the cursed child portrayed slytherin the nicest - although it doesn't exist - the play was fun to watch tho . i hate the fact the character names and some other stuff are different in french tho (as someone who lives in the UK but has a french family) im less mad about the cultural context being changed but i think the US edition could have kept the same name . i didn't even know percy jackson had a UK version :o
I actually think the Slytherin redemption started out as a fandom thing before Pottermore existed. Slytherin was actually the only other house you could get merchandise for in the 2000s. A lot of people identified with it BECAUSE they saw it as evil and wanted to show it as misunderstood, for sort of the same reason fanfiction always shows Draco as misunderstood or being redeemed. What Pottermore did was make it canon.
Thank you for posting this video! Tiktok is banned in my country for years, and I know for fact that your videos would have definitely appeared in my fyp
As a Canadian, i think they didn’t change the Canadian editions cause we have the same spelling for words as the UK. Whereas the US edition they had to rewrite the book to Americanize it, so they changed the contextual words
You have to admit though, it's pretty fucking funny that we thought Filch had finally snapped and found a way to get around Dumbledore's rule of no more shackles to abuse children by just kicking the everliving daylights out of them. It fits his character perfectly! Think about having a Canadian Edition scenario where he pays Bilton Blimes to invent a new product called Fanged Pucks instead of Frisbees and uses them against students who pulled pranks on him for being a Squib. Also, personally if my cat was petrified because some student opened the Chamber of Secrets, regardless if they're possessed or not I'm polishing my shackles and hanging Ginny by her ankles. 😭😭
18:46 while I might be missing some cultural knowledge to explain why they went with “In the name of a vampire!” as an expression, they probably chose “jellyfish sack” because jellyfish in French is more literally translated to “medusa”. So Hagrid exclaiming “bag of medusa!” could be read as more fantastical, but a bag full of jellyfish would still be pretty shocking.
Harry's parents were both brilliant & some of the best in their year. Harry is a mostly terrible student, who is frequently assigned extra homework to catch up. He's not actually dumb, when he applies himself he does pretty well. Often though, you wonder if the Dursleys' neglect actually damaged is brain function & not just his emotional development.
My Percy Jackson books are from the UK (because they're much cheaper) and it took me a bit to figure out what was just slightly different than when I was a child
1. I don't think Harry is a dumb popular jock, but I do think Harry silly popular jock. Harry is smart. His test exam prove that. 2. I don't think all Slytherins is evil, but I do believe every Slytherin don't like muggle. Professor Slughorn for example, even though he's no really discriminate on muggle, even Harry notice that, when he talks about Lily, he said it like, it's a wonder a muggle could be that smart. That being said, the reason I don't think they were evil because, the books did gave a reason why some of them would hate muggle. Like what happened to Dumbledore's sister for example. What if someone in the past just face something like that and just teach their descendants muggle is evil. It's not justifiable, but it gave context to things. 3. Or you just ask the house elves or any wizard to cook the uncooked rice using magic and turn it cook rice. It's not blink in into existence, it already there. 4. I don't blame McGonagall and Neville's grandmother, both of them never even knew about the list being stole by a cat. All they knew was Neville being reckless during high security alert. Even when she found out about Sirius being innocent in book 5, she still didn't know about what the cat did. Harry, Ron and Hermione on the other hand.... 5 & 6. Personally I really don't like that. I more prefer if they just put the real words and just put a footnote explain that words. That way, kid can learn about other cultures at early age. 7. The school literally don't have any other clubs in Hogwarts other than Quidditch. I mean chess exist and there is not even chess club exist. 8. Yup, totally agree. That's exactly what I thought the whole time I was reading the books.
tbh, I never noticed the Percy Jackson changes (not that I was one of the people complaining) cause I normally listen to books on audible and the audible is always in the wording of it's country, I just knew what chips and sneakers were.
With the language thing, my school taught Spanish from kindergarten and then gave us some switch choices in 6th grade and I think that worked pretty well. I don’t use the Spanish I learned like ever but it was a good experience to be aware of how different other places can be
For the whole rice and making more of it I have a theory. You can increase the quantity but it's effectively like a husk of itself. So while you can turn 1 grain into a bag of rice it would almost be like eating just the singular grain. It would fill your stomach but ultimately you would be starved of proper nutrition since it doesn't give the sustenance that you need
On the topic of changing the books to fit different countries, it is absolutely necessary especially for a children’s book. I growing up reading books from other countries before the internet, yes I am old. In order to figure out slang and such in books I had to time a lot of time to actually look it up in a dictionary or encyclopedia. Or worse just guess. Now for the most part, I was lucky on British books, because my great grandmother was Irish, so my grandmother used some British slang. For example Peppermint Humbugs, my great grandmother LOVED them, and had found an Irish candy store who hand made them. She always had some with her when she came to visit. She died when I was young, but I still remember the peppermint humbugs. I also grew up watching Masterpiece Theater, which had lots of British movies. Plus I loved Dr Who. Most of the kids I grew up with refused to take the time and work needed to read a book from another English speaking country. So many would have either stopped reading the books or just lost a lot of it. I do believe both versions should have been available. Having both would have massively helped kids to develop a love of literature from other countries.
Hey wanted say, you should read Demigod Files because certain things in that books are referenced in The Heroes of Olympus, Also you get interviews from Annabeth and Percy.
The Take also has a good video explaining how Slytherin's traits aren't inherently evil, and in most franchises cunning and ambition are viewed as admirable
What I find very interesting is that I was a Slytherin. I was sorted years ago. I used two different email addresses, and I was a Slytherin both times. Fast forward 20 years, and two kids later, and I redid the test. Three times. Each time I had been sorted into Hufflepuff. People change.
A good example of food appearing out of nowhere is when Harry and Ron are in Snape’s office after they get in trouble for crashing into the Womping Willow. Mcgonagall leaves them in the office and waves her wand and a plate of sandwiches appear on Snape’s desk (and they keep spawning). Luv u Mikaila!
Im Australian, and nothing was changed about our books from the UK version. I think they just expected us to know what the words meant. But sayting that, when the books came out, Australia wasnt as "Americanized" as we are now
I am reading the American version of the books now, and it's hard to reset my mind from the movie version. For example, Harry's height lol, it makes a huge difference in imagining him being a jock when he is taller. I could watch 2 hours or more of you talking about HP lol. Yes I agree with the previous comment, please consider a podcast!!!
Oh my maker…I NEVER thought as Harry as a jock! 🤯 But it makes sense! I would probably be friends with Luna, Nevile, and aquantences with Herminone. I would doubt Ron would know my name and Harry would be like “Who are you again?”
18:34 They should have added that paragraph to the American translation too! I’m not dyslexic, but for several chapters, I thought Percy was calling himself a “perfect”. In book three, I though “Head Boy” was just something JKR made up for the book, like the details about magic. Also, the pun on “Spell-o-tape” falls pretty flat on this side of the pond, where the brand name that’s been genericized is Scotch rather than cello-tape.
For the food thing I heard from another video that while you can duplicate it, it loses nutrition and taste quality. Like it sucks some out to make the new food or something. Makes some sense.
just because Harry has poor eyesight and wears glasses, doesn’t automatically make him a nerd.
Frrr
A theory is that harry needed glasses only because of the scar, and thats why he has perfect vision in limbo without glasses
yes thank you omg didn't the author write harry to have glasses just so a non-nerd main character would have glasses??
The day I realised Harry was a jock made me rethink my whole childhood.
I kinda got that feeling when rereading the books. Him and Ron seemed like the type

The seventh book: Not redeeming Slytherin
Fans: “Fine I’ll do it myself.”
The thing is, that’s not entirely correct. Towards the end of the battle in the books there’s a third group that arrive to help defend the castle, explicitly including some of the Slytherins and Ravenclaws that left alongside adults (although it is a very small and easy to miss mention)
@@garethmorton5620wait, where? I don't remember it.
@@SR-jr5nh There weren't. JK Rowling talk about it in the interview. I'm not sure whether to count it or not because of the Cursed Child.
It was a beautiful moment for his character.
I would love to have friends like Luna / Neville!...I wish I had friends. 😢
@@JjjjjjVvvvv-ny6od I don't disagree, buuuut.... Cho was a girl he had been crushing on for over a year & older than Harry. Romilda Vane was a random 4th year. Still think he grew.
The movies did not do anything for any of the student characters!
Dude was so popular and sought after, a girl literally tried to drug him into going to the ball with her 😭😭
It was only because of the chosen one speculation. And I say that in a sense that only 2 people know what the prophecy says.
not even just one girl, a bunch. Hermione mentioned that a GROUP of girls were discussing how to give Harry a love potion in the bathroom. Bro was popular af after he became THE CHOSEN ONEEEE
Hey, she's only interested in you because she thinks you're the chosen one.
Well, I am the chosen on- _smack_

He didn’t sought after her..?? He had no interest in Romilda Vain. He sought after Cho who never tried such a thing
@ yeah, the commenter said how *other* people sought after him, not the other way round
Tbf I think Slythering house suffer from a self fulfilling prophecy. If you say a person is bad before knowing them you basically put them on the position of doing bad things. Voldemort only took advantage of the situation.
THANK YOU
Actually, a very good point. Maybe I'd still call him a jock if I had to choose between "jock" and "nerd", but that was a good observation.
@@roca7268can stuff stop being a spectrum cant they be a triangle or a dodecahedron or a hyperbolic paraboloid why always spectrum

He is a popular jock indeed! Just because his dad was more of a typical jock, doesn't mean Harry isn't one. I would argue that Draco is actually less popular than Harry - he gives mad bully energy.
Draco is certainly accepted ny the leader by all in Slytherin.

Okay. She got me with the Harry Potter is a jock. Did always clearly think he was popular. The idea he was a loser is ridiculous though.
One of my biggest Harry Potter hills that I will die on is that one tiny change could have done SO much for helping Slytherin house be more nuanced and that is to make Dumbledore a Slytherin. And I'm not saying right from the start, I'm thinking of just taking out the line where Hermione knows what house Dumbledore is in and instead having Harry ask Ron "what house is Dumbledore in" and having Ron be like "uhh idk but it's got to be Griffindor right?" And then just let that be the assumption the whole series UNTIL the scene where Harry dies and sees Albus and have there be a line where Harry's just exasperated at Slytherin house and then Dumbledore's like "Harry didn't you know I was a Slytherin?"
I think it would have done so much to help nuance for it and also honestly makes more sense for Dumbledore's character to be a Slytherin rather than a Griffindor
Anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk, rant over
Ok thats a pretty good idea lol
@@elisabethwilliams2406 ok so this would be a very valid point I feel if Dumbledore was more... clean-cut? In fanon people have analysed his questionable decisions to death, but even in canon we dive into his background with Grindlewald and how it took his sister dying to wake him up. I think Dumbledore as a Gryffindor is like Pittigrew Lite, a reminder that not all Gryffindors are righteous agents of justice.
@@mehrianouri3282 agreed
The whole "sorting 11 year olds according to personality traits" is a stupid concept setting all of them up for failure
Draco was pretty cruel before book 6 & 7 .. he loved everything that would hurt Harry, Ron or Hermione
Regulus Black also didn’t became a death eater to gain information about Voldemort that he then would use against him, NO, Sirius himself said that he at first supported Voldemort and thought he has the right ideas till he joined & got cold feet.. once he saw the cruelty he changed his mind and rebelled against him
I always figured the houses reflected someone’s approach to survival/how they view their role in the greater community.
That’s the only bad thing about Slytherin - the cunning - like Rowling the author said „ambition but to which prize?“
That’s why Slytherin brought up so many dark horrible wizards & witches - they were filled with pride & prejudice (also one of Slytherins characteristics) and willing to do sacrifices to achieve their goals even if it’s gonna cause harm & destruction to others.
What's it called and how do I find it? That genuinely sounds super interesting
Finally, someone whose books are in comparable state to mine! I have the same edition, before me it was my brother’s for a decade and then I got them and used them so much that the cover of the fifth one is fall off and the first one isn’t much better. It’s not disrespect, it’s passion!
Regarding cultural differences in the translations:
I grew up reading the German versions first and as English is my second foreign language I had actually read the (first five) books in French as well before finally being able to read the English originals.
Eight year old me just could not grasp what the minister from Harry Potter had to do with those... things.
hahaha oh my gosh I love hearing translation stories like this 😂
I also grew up with the german version.
The dedication goes crazy
Harry Potter was THAT guy, the movies don’t do him justice
0:28 Harry is the popular kid. Oliver wood is the jock. Hermione is the nerd. Luna is the weird one. Ron is the best friend. Ginny is the popular kids girl friend. Neville is the one who forgets everything.
Oh you are SO right about Harry. He's ABSOLUTELY a jock. And of course he's popular. He's Harry Potter!!
Ah, nothing like ranting about your favorite fictional characters to a bunch of people, it's one of my favorite past times!!!😁😆
I spent so much time yelling at the book Harry and Ron to just go study already!
SAME I cannot believe they’re at a literal school of magic and have no interest in learning anything 😂 especially Harry who didn’t grow up in the wizarding world like how is this stuff not interesting!! he was tired from fighting Voldemort every year I guess so I’ll give him a pass on being lazy hahaha
same. I am always like did you guys even learn anything today??? And : hermione is not going to write the exams for you lol
they always got help from Hermione for their homeworks lol. I think rin always copied directly more or less and Harry was 50/50 sometimes he would copy and sometimes hed try and do the work himself but Hermione would add and corrct stuff for him
or when Ron and Harry were taking thst seer class and would make up stuff lol
@@k.5425 and how readily they took to direct action learnning, like the DA training. I was surprised they didn't continue it just because they enjoyed it so much.
As a fellow Slytherin, you had me at kitchen, I would ask for Hufflepuff too
I read the book in elementary school and I low key HATED Ron and Harry for how they mooched off Hermione’s hard work because I was literally THAT GIRL who several classmates only made friends with so they could copy my homework.
@@missanthropy6174 on this term I agree with you completely though you got a few points slightly incorrect
Harry and Ron did not make fun of her when she polyjuiced into cat. They visited her everyday and when term started they also gave her each day's homework
Hermione only usually checked harry and Ron's homework pointed out mistakes.Even when Ron's homework was splaterred with ink or when nearly all the essay has a bunch of spelling errors in it,she fixed it but encouraged them to try doing their own homework
Nobody is perfect but Comparing the goods of harry and Ron's friendship with hermione with the bad, there more good than bad
And this is coming from someone who also deeply relates to Mione.
you absolutely can sell slytherin stuff to people by calling it evil, do you know how popular sith outfits and lightsabers are?
Well, there’s also a whole subset of Star Wars fandom that portrays the Sith as misunderstood emo rebels…
haha I feel like the prequels and the clone wars definitely helped give the sith a little bit of a rebrand with anakin's tragic backstory, though I imagine dark side merch was still popular even before the prequels (anyone who was a star wars fan when the og films came out feel free to chime in!) but I feel like during the og era the sith were perhaps not seen as 'racist' in the way slytherins were? I feel like the main reason slytherin needed a rebrand was specifcally because of the racist connotations that the house had, because I think people would be fine wearing merch from the 'evil' house but not the prejudice house! especially when you're trying to sell to kids you definitely don't want slytherin merch to have a racist undertone 😭
@@magicbymikaila for some reason its only now clicked that by racist you mean they believe pure bloods are better i have been co fused this entire time 😂 i get it noww
hahaha that was my poor wording choice I’m sorry, I need a better word for wizard racism 😂🙈
@@magicbymikaila might be the case but i was also reading very late into the night or very early in the morning depending on how you looks at it 😂

THERES A WIZARDING ACADEMY OF DRAMATIC ARTS????????????
There are more fun stuff like that, but I can't think of any others right now and I need to sleep lol
Goodnight! 😘
oh so cool, I love hearing how the books are translated in other languages!! (also I LOVE krembo, I’ve only tried it once and I’ve been wishing since then I could buy it in the US 😭😂)
Krembo isn't available the rest of the year because it would melt in the heat
7:07 college level, Harry Potter class? That’s crazy.😂
….
where do I apply? 😅
haha it was at UC Berkeley! they have student taught classes that you can get actual class credit for so this was an English class that was offered, it was so much fun!
Not me learning today that Filch was not drop kicking students when he was described "punting"

If they have rice & water, they could create the same conditions as a rice cooker with magic.
This is the earliest i've been to a video
@@Caden-fe6lm what if a tentacle just grabbed a death eater & passed him to a gang of merpeople?
22:44 Not me fangirling over your Percy Jackson t-shirt
Harry Potter is not a nerd. Nerds usually are way more invested in the magical world than Harry was. Also, the amount of times Harry had to let Hermione do his homework for him does not look like the behaviour of a nerd, either.
18:54 In Danish that song was also changed to a parody of a Danish Christmas song. We also had the issue of a mistranslation: Lemon sherbert, a hard candy, was translated to lemon sorbet, an ice cream. As one of my friends pointed out: "Dumbledore must have some pretty sticky pockets."
22:53 Buying the UK edition of Goosebumps was pretty jarring, because they change wording too. Seeing a boy I know is American talk about a "bloke" is so weird.
6:23 AS A SLYTHERIN we have our…moments…
Slytherins are truly undervalued 🐍🔥
Oh my god Mikayla, this video has my inner Potterhead tingling with joy! These opinions on the Harry Potter books are so well explained; I can't help but agree with them! I was wondering if you could make more of your hilarious skits on Percy Jackson and Harry Potter (Book vs. movies preferably)! My favorite one of yours was the Dumbledore book vs. movie video. "HARRY DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIRE" Thank you so much for this video!
Sincerely, one of your greatest fans,
Zoya! (:
Helllloooooo wow I’m so early !
Harry’s not a nerd and not a textbook jock and it’s even more uncertain because of how he looks but like your saying he’s personally and status is completely different in the books and movies .
I love these. You're so funny 😂
Sorry but "peace out, I'm not dying for my highschool" made me laugh lol
i think the cursed child portrayed slytherin the nicest - although it doesn't exist - the play was fun to watch tho . i hate the fact the character names and some other stuff are different in french tho (as someone who lives in the UK but has a french family) im less mad about the cultural context being changed but i think the US edition could have kept the same name . i didn't even know percy jackson had a UK version :o
I don't have tiktok so I'm very glad to be able to watch all these! Thank you so much, your videos are so funny!!
There were some words I thought were Wizarding words or phrases that instead were just British lol
Was Harry a popular kid? Yes absolutely. Did his popularity get him in bad situations? Also yes.
18:46 while I might be missing some cultural knowledge to explain why they went with “In the name of a vampire!” as an expression, they probably chose “jellyfish sack” because jellyfish in French is more literally translated to “medusa”.
So Hagrid exclaiming “bag of medusa!” could be read as more fantastical, but a bag full of jellyfish would still be pretty shocking.
this has got to be the longest magic by Mikaila video yet!
Harry do be a jock boy. You're right.
Let's not forget lack of food, in early development.
My Percy Jackson books are from the UK (because they're much cheaper) and it took me a bit to figure out what was just slightly different than when I was a child
It should be noted the smurfs had already explained to the Harry Potter generation in America what a philosopher's stone is
Thank you for posting this here I loved listening to you ramble about Harry Potter 😄
What is your house? Every single analyst you have a different house outfittt
I’m a Ravenclaw! 💙🦅 I just own all the house robes 😂
Harry is a popular jock, but I wouldn't call him dumb. He's an above-average student with a lot of street smarts
Harry is definitely a jock. I feel like jock was his default and everything else is what he had to do to survive.
"*Harry's a Jock*" . Gets it from his father. Marauders fandom James is chaos.
tbh, I never noticed the Percy Jackson changes (not that I was one of the people complaining) cause I normally listen to books on audible and the audible is always in the wording of it's country, I just knew what chips and sneakers were.
With the language thing, my school taught Spanish from kindergarten and then gave us some switch choices in 6th grade and I think that worked pretty well. I don’t use the Spanish I learned like ever but it was a good experience to be aware of how different other places can be
Just saw you appear in a HP trivia video. Was such a shock, but I loved the fantastic beasts comments😂😂
22:43 Aaah yes "Percival Jackson and the nicked lightning" innit? 😂
Having both would have massively helped kids to develop a love of literature from other countries.
ok i love that you read his dark materials. and that you feel that way about lyra growing up. and your freckles (your ok at mekup imo).
That transation deep dive was fascinating... oh my days!
Please do a books vs movies Charlie Weasley

Regarding the rice: you don't need a rice cooker. You can do it old-school and use a pot on the stove.
Lol Mikaila ily thank you sm for compiling this
No self respecting nerd would need Hermione to help them for nearly 7 years of school
“I don’t know. Do you think I need a life?” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh my maker…I NEVER thought as Harry as a jock! 🤯 But it makes sense! I would probably be friends with Luna, Nevile, and aquantences with Herminone. I would doubt Ron would know my name and Harry would be like “Who are you again?”
I loved that you've watched A Very Potter Musical lmao
18:34 They should have added that paragraph to the American translation too! I’m not dyslexic, but for several chapters, I thought Percy was calling himself a “perfect”. In book three, I though “Head Boy” was just something JKR made up for the book, like the details about magic. Also, the pun on “Spell-o-tape” falls pretty flat on this side of the pond, where the brand name that’s been genericized is Scotch rather than cello-tape.
Also all the “er”s and “erm”s
The Sphinx’s riddle in the Third Task only makes sense if you have a non-rhotic accent.
I didn’t realize Filch wasn’t drop-kicking students until watching this video.
I’m sure the Brits are grateful for books being localized for them every time they read “trousers”!
It wasn't until I was an adult that I found out that prefect and head boy/girl was not something JK made up for Wizard schools
It’s so cool how u taught a college level course on Harry Potter! I would so go to it
Love ya, keep it up girl! 🫰
For the food thing I heard from another video that while you can duplicate it, it loses nutrition and taste quality. Like it sucks some out to make the new food or something. Makes some sense.
Love this, please more compilations?
