Well, the Yagami style of fighting IS this specific one from XIII. Iori has flames because of Orochi shenanigans, if I remember correctly.

Johnatan Piazza it's a pact because the Yasakani clan was weaker then both Yata and Kusanagi, and because of a misunderstanding, they searched for strength in Orochi, making the Riot of the Blood. Then, they earned their purple flame, to match with Kusanagi clan.

Once the Seal of Orochi weakened, the Kusanagi, Yasakani and Yata clan moved Orochi to restrenght it. All the Hakkeshu were sealed in different places than Orochi and thus the plan backfired, as despite Orochi's seal got repaired, the Hakkeshu's weren't. Free, they deviced a plan to make the clans fight each other, and so killed the wife of the Yasakani head and set the Kusanagi up.
Enraged, the Yasakani made the pact with Orochi to power up their flames and claim revenge on the Kusanagi.

He's meant to be the opposite to Kyo in a lot of ways, sun vs moon, Kyos themes being rock while Iori's is Jazz, Kyo's themes have a heavy use of Electric Guitars so they gave Iori the Saxophone in his themes as the answer to the instruments that appear in every Esaka. The Bass plays alongisde the Sax in every theme without fail as that's Iori's instrument.

I'm going to be honest. I'm not the biggest fan of KOF XIII Iori, however, if there is one thing about this version of Iori that makes me appreciate it, is the animations. I mean just look at that huge bleeding scratch he does at the end of those supers.
Like geez! Chill out Iori! This is King of Fighters! Not Mortal Kombat! You want to get into Mortal Kombat? Let me go ask Ed Boon.
