good video! and, as a plumber, I thank you for mentioning not washing bacon grease down the drain, especially in an apartment, your downstairs neighbors will thank you too that your dirty water isnt backing up into their sink. I got my griddle yesterday and used it, found out it needed to be seasoned after a bit of oil didnt stop my eggs from sticking. I will add a bit of advice I learned in my studies... I use vegetable oil, having a smoke point of 450. Olive oil varies, on type, quality, between 360 and 468, I have read more people complaining of their season burning off using olive oil. I have also read recommendations of coconut oil, having a 450 smoke point as well. after burning eggs on my griddle, I gave it a good scrape down the best I could, cooked the heck out of it in the Q, scraped the carbonized egg off, and polished some veg oil into the griddle, got the paper towel back black, poured more oil, rubbed it in hot, repeating until the paper towels came back clean with the yellow color of the oil. I let it cool, gave it another good rub, and put it away.
Man, you definitely take better care of your griddle thank I do. I usually just wipe it down and then run it on super hot for a while. Then another wipe down after it cools again. That said, my Q needs a good spring cleaning, and I'm hoping to get to that this week. Thanks for watching, and yes I agree about the types of oil. I have some grapeseed back in the city, but I'm not in any hurry to get back to NYC right now.
I've been cooking with, restoring and collecting vintage cast iron for a long time and the surface on this griddle is so rough you can sharpen an axe with it! Yes, season it. But never with olive oil because of it's low flash point and flavor. Warm it up, rub in some vegetable oil (Crisco works just fine and is flavorless), wipe off the excess and cook it just like you did.
I would have liked to have seen you cook the bacon without any oil because bacon makes its own grease. The REAL test of any cast iron is can you cook an egg without it sticking with little oil, butter, etc. I plan to test that with mine and if it doesn't work I'll give it a new, smoother surface and a re-seasoning. I'll post the video on my channel.
Also, this griddle is listed on the Weber website for the Q1000 only but as you have demonstrated it will fit the Q1200 too. Great channel man!
Thanks man. Appreciate the feedback.
Also, the Q1200 is basically an updated Q1000. Same grill but with a higher domed lid, built-in thermometer and fold-down side tables.
I picked one of those up for camping last year, and I like it! We fried eggs for breakfast on it, and grilled bacon on the grate side.
Seems like it'd be perfect for camping.
Have had my Griddle since new, bought as an accessory when I bought my Q. I usually cook the bacon on the grill, and eggs etc. on the griddle ( hot plate ) Found with my family Q it was best to turn the center burner off, the other burner on low, as the eggs would burn on the bottom, before the white was cooked. Looking forward to seeing how you get on with new griddle. Regards, Brian. ( Downunder )
If this is a Q2200, it only has a single burner.
You can't go wrong with bacon! That looks like a nice addition to the Q. Looking forward to seeing more action from that griddle!!! Cheers brother!
Thanks T-Roy! Keep up the good work in Austin.
If its porcelain covered, how the heck does treating it as raw cast iron make a differance ? It supposed to be able to be used out of the box. Ps, olive oil is not a good oil to use.
Good pick up. I have one for my Q 3200 and it is awesome! Looking forward to seeing more cooks you do with it!
Love your work Q-Man
Thank you Mac. Really appreciate the kind words.
Awesome, looking forward to more griddle grilling!
Nice one Fire Escape Griller. I bought one of these shortly after I bought the Q, and have yet to use it. So really looking forward to some recipes that use it.
I've got one griddle vid in the works and more ideas on the way. Stay tuned.
Great video! I was thinking about getting that griddle attachment too! Is that T-Roy in the comments?!?!
Get it! It's kind of fun. And yes, that's the man himself.
Bought the griddle last year works well,it can also be used on the left or right side of the grill.
That's interesting. Thank you, Jeff.
I’m about to do this right now, bacon junkie here lol Super helpful man!
the bacon would "season", coconut oil has a very high flash point and is recommended for organic seasoning....tho these are porcelain coated cast iron i still rub with coconut oil after cleaning
Great Video. Can't wait to see what you cook up next! I can taste it now ..... Swine and Wine!
Thanks for the video. However, I don't find any information from Weber about seasoning enameled cast iron griddles/grates. Are you sure it is necessary?
Great video. Steak and eggs on WeberQ would be awesome
Looks like a great accessory for 'Q' owners.
I think it'd be great for camping.
Great video, keep them coming
Got one and they very good worth buying! Look towards what you going to cook and I have done some peri chicken which came out perfect
I've been meaning to make a peri peri chicken video. It's on my list!
Fire Escape Griller cool look towards that and keep them coming as I have tried few things you have done. And came out spot on!
All of these Smells, Cool.
Would you only recommend using silicon tipped tools on the griddle? Like will stainless steel damage the enamel abd ruin it or something?
I don't think it matters. I use a metal spatula and tongs all the time and have never had a problem. Cheers!
Sweet video! Do they make a griddle for the 2200? Mine has a one piece cooking grate. On a side note.... really dig your watch! Is that a seiko?
They make them for all the Q's and there's the Breakfast plate that does the same thing only it sits on of your grates.
You might just want to use a cast-iron pan, like in my beer brats video. The thing with these Weber Qs is that the lid needs to close. And yes, it's a Seiko SKX. Thanks for watching, Bill.
Why use soap and water on cast iron? Just like pans and pots, you would usually just rinse with hot water and scrape away sticky stuff, and then just re-season. After a while, it should be pretty much non-stick. Soap would remove the seasoning and potentially get inside the pores of the cast iron. Bacon is awesome to add to the seasoning... Also, I get that this was at a lower temperature, but why use olive oil? It has a low smoke point. Not the best oil to use in a grill application. Other than that, great review. That thing is neat.
Weber recommends warm soapy water in the booklet that came with the griddle. Not sure why. I guess I could have used grape seed oil as I did have that on hand, but the olive oil worked fine. This was my first time using this griddle so I'll get more used to it.
What Boris said. Just treat like any cast iron and that will give you better flavor, plus cast iron needs to be oiled to prevent rust. The bacon fat is better than either oil you mentioned IMO. Awesome videos.
Grapeseed oil is considered one of the best oils to use for seasoning metal. The reason is that grapeseed oil creates a stronger coating than say vegetable oil. Olive oil should be avoided for seasoning. You want to use a high temp oil which most olive oils aren't.
It is coated with porcelain enamel as he said in the video, so you are washing the coating, not the cast iron.
I bought the griddle and it works great.
Yep. Definitely liking it. Thanks for watching, Neptune.
Good video, looking forward to others.
Thanks Chuck. I've got about 70 other videos on my channel. Most are Weber Q. Please check them out. Cheers man!
Didn't think FDNY would allow had grilling on the fire escape
I have it too and i use it a lot for baking patatoes and vegetables/mushrooms whike grilling meat on the other side.
I have it on the left side by the way. What makes you think it should be on the right side?
Hi there! Should I also season the grill plates? Cheers!
I don't think it's necessary. I actually don't think you need to season the griddle either. Modern cast iron, especially porcelain-coated doesn't need to be seasoned.
@@GallaghersGrub Legend, cheers for the reply. How my weber q a few weeks ago and I'm loving it. Will definitely be going through your channel!
If you're looking for any ideas, I would love to see a tutorial on roasting veggies, especially potato, I seem to be struggling with the round bastards!
Did you have to season the actual Q grates when you first got them. If you did how did you do it. Thanks
I thought the enameled cast iron doesn't require seasoning
Having used these griddles now for a couple years, you're right. It does not need seasoning.
i just got one of these for free, im exited
Does it hapoen to come with a little complimentary cook book?
Think 3 pieces is not very much but after seeing this I will just use my grill mat that offers more room
I haven't tried a grill mat, but I think I'll get one this year. Thanks Roz.
Does the griddle fit on both sides so you can substitute both grates for griddles?
The griddle will work on either side. Weber recommends against using two at once because it restricts air flow.
Awesome mate.
Have you cooked a full pound of bacon on the griddle? Wife an i are looking at the weber q and griddle for camp. Was wondering if you have cooked that much was there too much extra grease for the drain? also could the grill handle it?
Yes, I have. On multiple occasions. It's a great little grill for camping and the griddle is very useful as well.
It will be interesting to see how you get on with a fried egg. Hi from UK
John Hartley I’ve fried eggs on it a few times. I also seasoned it before the first use. Eggs turned out well!
All Smells, Cool.
Super demo video
Thank you! Appreciate you watching Mel.
These ones, Cool.
Alright
Did you find that griddling greasy foods gets grease all over the grill and side shelf?
Yes, grease gets on the grill and side shelf.
I have the same griddle on my Q3200! I use it for the vegetables, very useful tool for our Weber Q!
Just a quick question...do u have an Instagram account too ? Cheers from Italy !
Fire_Escape_Griller on instagram, but stay tuned, I'm changing the name of the show. Thanks for watching in Italy!
Nice. You will enjoy this for sure. :)
Yessir, Lasse. Can already taste the greasy burgers that'll come off this griddle.
Would it be possible to place one of these on top of the normal grate?
My Q100 is an older model, and they had one-piece grates, but I'm thinking it would be possible to just place the griddle on top.
Yes, I've read that will work, but haven't tried it yet.
If you get two you can have double the cooking surface ;)
Is this grill better than others at leaking smoke? I need a grill that isn't as smokey because of my lungs
It's a gas grill, so it's not as smokey as charcoal, but it smokes just like any other grill when you put fatty foods on it. Try leaner cuts of meat like boneless skinless chicken (maybe chicken kebabs) for less smoke. Cheers!
Can you use two of these at once?
Weber recommends not using two at once. I think it's an airflow reason and could lead to an explosion.
Alright.
Hi bought one of these for my weber q. Iv had trouble with it sticking and black bits on the food. Any suggestions, should I try seasoning it again?
First thing I'd do is really scrub it clean. I would then season it again after it's clean (not sure if this is necessary because it's porcelain enamel, but it can't hurt). Always use some kind of oil or fat before adding your food. Also, use a metal spatula that can really get under the food. Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.
Top man I will keep you posted thanks
@@GallaghersGrub metal on metal ,NO, check out cowboy cooking, kent Rollins, the proper way to season and cook with cast you might find it interesting
Alright....
Would like to see some salmon on that griddle 👍
I have a salmon recipe I've been working on, but it's on the grates not the griddle. Still gonna be a good one.
My brand new Q 1200 on LOW will hit temps of 400 F. Is that normal? I mean I even pre heat it on low and it gets that hot. Thanks
That seems a bit hot. Mine on low is about 350 F - which is still too hot for a good low and slow. Yours may be running hot or your thermometer may be off. Hope this helps.
Fire Escape Griller thanks!!!
Alright..
Your not supposed to wash cast iron with soap... Unless your trying to strip the seasoning on purpose
EDIT: After looking it up... This is a PORCELAIN-ENAMELED cast iron... So it's perfectly fine to use soap everytime after use. However all normal cast iron shouldn't be cleaned with soap 👍
Weber recommends warm water and soap in the booklet that comes with the griddle. I guess "porcelain-enameled" makes the difference, but I'm not sure.
Eggs?
Made a couple eggs on the griddle this morning. And more bacon! Came out great.
drained off the bacon grease.... : (
best food for muslims right there,
Bacon!
So what I learnt today was that American bacon, has no..... bacon... just fat. Edit... Australian bacon wins. Double Edit... Australian bacon vs American bacon comparison.. ua-cam.com/video/IWIj703AA_g/v-deo.html
