- Are you famous? If so, you probably had your portrait taken by Mark Seliger. If not, you have most definitely seen his iconic portraits. Perhaps it was the one of Kurt Cobain, Barack Obama, Angelina Jolie or P Diddy, to name just a few examples.
We recently had the privilege of meeting this master of portrait photography. The meeting resulted in five unique videos, in which Seliger shares his thoughts on lighting and portrait photography.
In this episode he shares some tips and tricks on how he lights his portraits.

Can see the whole studio in the sunglasses 🙈
I like that Mark features his videos on UA-cam, but lighting is never a fixed configuration for portraits. Some of the greatest work happens with a single light source and good chemistry with a subject. The great equipment also helps.
old school 90's glamour
oh c'mon guys this person photographed celebrities and really important people. They obviously come to him because they like his work. He is able to capture the right expression on one's face. His work is clean and timeless.
he's the greatest photographer, musician and and even cooler human being!!!
thats what they all say about their favorite famous person..yawn..
Who cares? The guy is great at what he does. Period. that's all there is to it.
M7CVZ mark seliger is also a musician with a band called Rusty Truck - and he's become a wonderful friend of our family- a master of many arts :)
Denice Duff ah okay
Thanks De Nice.
Why would you use a beauty dish, grid and then the diffuser. That would negate the grid. You would need to use the grid after the diffuser if you want to control the light direction wouldn't you?
That was probably just a mistake in the order of the diagram. I'm sure he used the grid over the diffuser.
The way the softlight/ beauty dish is made, you can't use the grid over the diffuser; the grid sits inside the lip of the dish, while the diffusion sock fits over the outside edge.
A damn lot of people use the grid over the sock, just clamp it down.
Ll G it works with the diffuser on the inside. The pressure you apply to make it all fit will vary depending on the size of the sock, but it works.
People also use the grid inside then the diffuser over it, though. It does take away some of the concentration of light but not all of it. But if you want very focused light but still soft you’d need to put the sock on first then the grid.
Lenny!! 😍
Carlton Hart one of the best in the biz for portraits!
can i get this lighting effect with less lights?
which one of the 3 effects.
The 5 light set up you can get it done with three lights. Two side light you can use 7" reflectors or softboxes and the beauty dish or a silver reflective umbrella in front. To control the background lighting use the front light further from subject to increase background lighting.
Typhoon Jet yes I think so
@@antoniorivera1646 The funny thing is you think he doesn’t know that. His work is the way it is because of how he prefers to do things. There are several ways to do different things. You do it your way and leave him to do it his way.
@@antoniorivera1646 Apologies. I definitely misread the situation.
You would think the music for this video would be, I don't know, better!?
Lol i don't know, i like it. It's spacious, kina like the scene.
@@sunesnigel took u 3 yrs to decide huh
@@FilippeFlogger well you know it's not easy gathering your thoughts on a matter such as this. I've been thinking long and hard to reach this conclusion. My other thought was that they should've dubbed the whole video to German and just droped the music.
@@sunesnigel I would've thought translate into Troll.
@@FilippeFlogger Well troll(the supernatural being) is not really a translation! Either way, I honestly like the music in the video.
Muito bom!
cómo iluminaron tu cuello?
Looks like some one prefers a Mamiya.
LOL
Down right naf images.
I did not care for the ring light.
With a camera that cost 50k shit can look like gold.
Only if you know how to use said camera. Doesn't matter how fancy or expensive a piece of gear is, if you can't shoot worth shit, your pictures will STILL most certainly look like shit.
You know shit. I can get shots like this with my fuji GFX and off camera flash. You don't need a phase one.
This guy needs 4 assistance? Oh man! I can do that whole job by myself.
When you are shooting this type of work, the faster you can move from look to look, set to set is important. You may only have minutes to do the job, and while you may be experienced, you won’t do the job faster than four experienced people.
googo151 Trust me, I do photography and at least one assistant maybe 2 works. I’ve done a lot of shoots alone but changing backdrops if I’m in studio or if I’m on location... an assistance comes in handy.
Lenny Kravitz isn't standing around while you fiddle with light setups.
@@bryang4856 EXACTLY. Perfect answer right there.

Cropped at the shins? Yuck! Any light could achieve these results.
not impressed.
very traditional lighting.
Rankin for example does t better, also Joe L. is more innovative.
ami s how does Rankin do it better?
Long Nguyen Rankin is a true wizard with lights. Check it out
ami s I am very familiar with Rankin's work, but you haven't say hold Rankin does it better.
Check Joe Carr's work.
Joey l Lawrence is way better
lighting set up were fool
but results not so cool
so to be famous u need to connect and market and not good at your work
And you have to be able to sell your shity lighting as if it's an art form
The results he gets might not be your thing but to say he’s not good is laughable.
step one, get the light equipment. step two, get a hassleblad..
unless you're totally awesome cuz in that case you can just do it with your iphone and some free camera app right..
El Mono: Lol...right, 'cuz the guys you mention that "forgot the rules" early on in their careers (Testino and Richardson) are young??? What are you talking about? Anyway, doing things like using fills/bounces and ring flashes are going to be around for (young) photographers to use for a long time to come...
You're missing my point (duh): You complain that the old dudes need to make way for the young guns (fair enough, as new voices in the arts are usually accomplished by younger artists who break the rules established before them), yet you use as your example two (now) old dudes to make your point...which is contradictory...if you're so keen on seeing the younger photogs who don't have "50 thousand dollar Hasselblads" to play with, then cite some cogent examples...you could start by digging into the new generation of fine art photogs breaking all sorts of rules (who graduated from UCLA Arts, or Bard, or a ton of other places), and are truly radicalizing the metaphysics of photography...but, to just sit there and b****h that the old cats need to step aside without any justification other than it annoys you that you are made to watch videos of "old dudes" sharing their professional knowledge makes you sound like laughable fool.
Lol. First off, being an MFA graduate of UCLA Arts myself, I can assure you that all of the students are not "rich", and we all got a ton of financial support because of this fact...But, all of this is irrelevant to the topic at hand: which is, give some examples of young guns whose videos we should be watching (or you'd like to see), if you are going to complain about the "old dudes" who are already established and seem to have first dibs on eyeballs on UA-cam. It doesn't make any sense to complain about the changing of the guard when you use examples that are culled from the very "old guard" that you wish to see move aside.
C'mon man, everyone knows we artsy Bruin hipsters only whipped out our art degrees at places like "Espresso Profeta", or "Paper or Plastik"...Shame on you for mentioning the "S" word.
I hardly think Terry Richardson, for the most part, created superior content. Let's be real. Up to now I don't know how he ever got into the entertainment industry with his work.
really boring image! sorry!
The images are just average. The reason they seem to be better is because of the icon in the image. Remove Lenny and it’s an uninteresting studio shoot.
