with the album of the year community, as a user myself, we listen to so much music that most people end up being very harsh for most of the reviews.
edit: singles tend to have low ratings, it's just something happens unless it's a massive artist
oh also we tend to add any music that's officially released, exclusive or not, idk why, it's just nice being able to rate everything.
It's always interesting to watch an outsider interact with the internet music sphere. I think it's important to realize that people that use rating sites (such as AOTY, RYM,...) listen to a lot of music on the daily basis. And I mean A LOT. That's honestly the main reason, imo, why your music gets so hated on - the average AOTY user heard some "generic hyperpop//indie rock type beat" a million times before, and when you combine that with some "questionable mixing" and "below average lyrics", a score of 3/10 is actually not that surprising. But don't forget that they're all just other peoples opinions and honestly, you should just make music that **you're** proud of, cuz' in the end, that's all that really matters.

19:33 is my “review” btw, I get the decision on intentionally messing up the mixing to give it 2000’s feel to it but I think it all comes down to the execution of the tracks itself, which in my opinion was relatively poor with some unpleasant vocals and surface level lyrics that weren’t very interesting. Still this was a pretty solid video and I’m glad you’re taking the criticism well. 👍🏾

I cant stand "super serious music raters" because instead of having an open mindset to music, they want to compare you to their favorates. not everyone one likes alt rock, just becasue something is indie or pop or whatever (not saying tuvs is just generaly talking about their critisism) means it is automatically bad in their eyes. somethimes they can have some real critism. but when they do, they will repeat that one talking point over and over. let me enjoy my quirked up zesty music in peace.

I do think people are overly harsh when they rate things on aoty but I really don't see the just hating on it because of the genre thing or comparing it to favorites really. I've seen listened tons genres from tons of different artists and generally there's good ratings for literally every genre I've gone through like for hyperpop there's people like charli xcx and indie is going insane right now with tons of albums making it to the 8+ category both critically and by the general audience.
Always thought the hate for your music was crazy. I am very into the AOTY and RYM scene, and they can absolutely be a-holes. Though Ear Candy and Bloom are not amazing, there are absolutely glimmers of greatness in them. The chorus of Ugly, the vocals on Replace ETC. I think that SLM! was an incredible step up. There are rough areas, particularly on the penultimate track, but Body and Outro are songs I regularly return to. I think up to this point Scaredy Cat is actually your best project. Track 05 was one of my favorite songs last year, and the rest of the songs range from a 6-9 out of 10. Consistently, through your discography, you have grown, learned and improved, and that has come to a head with your recent singles. Honey is fantastic! One of my favorite songs of this year so far. Overall, I’m excited to see where you go, and even though I’m not big on all your music, you absolutely do not deserve the crazy hate you have consistently gotten.

btw, as a frequent AOTY user, the reason why your single has way less reviews and ratings than your albums is because for one, well your singles are a whole lot more recent, but also because generally albums are reviewed much more than singles. whenever your album drops, itll get much more reviews than its singles.

this is sorta unrelated but i feel like what would help with tuvs albums/EPs doing better, is better rollouts. like making the album an experience yk? having different aesthetics, wearing certain outfits/dressing a certain way, having an overall theme, etc. idk if this helped or made any sense but technically what im trying to explain is having album rollouts like lady gaga, beyonce or tyler the creator. they have eras that you can define with a signature look or object and they have amazing visuals yk?

26:46 To answer why your music is so heavily reviewed on aoty it’s honestly a combination of the genre’s you reached out to and the whole “youtuber’s can’t make good music” stigma. Hyperpop is still a very divisive genre and even till this day it’s very hit or miss so seeing not just a youtuber but a commentary youtuber that isn’t particularly known for making music go into an alternative genre is interesting, especially towards people who use the site a lot. Also people just love to hate youtubers who try to make music even if they have genuine interest in the art, the only artists I know for sure that have beaten that stigma is Joji and more recently Quadeca to some degree, I got hope that your new music can prove people wrong about you since I do think you have some real potential to make something impactful in the scene.
16:33 Putting out your early work for the public eye is PART of being an artist. Without releasing things, you'll never get advice and criticism on what you need to change or fix. People like the commenters on ear candy are the reason criticism isn't ever brought up. Because people hear the album, and instead of saying what they think could help make it sound better, they just shit on it because it's not something they like. Sometimes songs aren't for everyone and it's pretty clear that there's an audience for every genre even if a majority of people don't like it, and if you're going out of your way to shit on someone's first serious album you're not giving them the chance they need to improve on their music, you're just demotivating them to not want to make songs anymore.

i have some constructive criticism. tuvs music is good, the beat, his voice, the production. but, the melodies in his songs feel repetitive. and that’s because there’s no switch up in the notes when he’s singing, it’s the same melody the whole thing, except for when he does the same melody but in a higher or lower pitch. repetitive is good for every song because that’s how songs become memorable and catchy, but it also should have switch ups in the melody/notes when you sing and also in the beat. like how there’s a beat drop in most songs along with a chorus, intro, verse, bridge, and outro. the only thing that your music could use is structure. i don’t know how to phrase this in a way that doesn’t seem rude but i wanted to give criticism. apart from all this criticism i’ve given, i have noticed the quality of your music is getting better and better. i would suggest looking into music structure more. you can find everything you need on youtube. also i thought i’d mention how it seems like your singing has been improving as well. your voice sounds stronger and clearer and honestly pretty pleasing to the ears. for example, i really like how your voice sounds in honey.
I’m not gonna lie and say I’ve always liked your music, but like you said there is a way of going about it. SLM is great and the indie stuff with the reverbed lofi sounding vocals go so hard. Just because you do UA-cam doesn’t mean you’re instantly gonna make amazing generational music. You have the same progression as anyone else. I released music and I’m telling you right now it ain’t great but the stuff I’m making now I believe it’s way better. I make most of my instrumentals and was a UA-cam producer so that’s my roots, but my vocals are coming along now. No matter what anyone says brother just remember as long as you can see you’re improving that all that matters. One day I’m gonna get that tuv feature trust me and if we keep going on the upwards trajectory man it’s gonna be fucking insane

I’ve used AOTY and listened to UA-camrs talk about music and honestly it’s really helped, it’s helped me find inspiration and study music. Aoty is kinda harsh at times but I don’t think they mean harm, just being honest. (Also as a music artist, even though mixing and melody are a bit off to me, Honey got a nice flow to it and got kinda good production) (also for the other guy having less attention, I think it’s cause you attract AOTY users more often I think)
What I always say especially when I was making music is always fuck the haters no matter if everyone hates your music you said you love doing it keep doing what you love no matter the hate I feel like sometimes I like the criticism because it shows me what my fans want to hear weather it’s oh I wish he was better at this or that you will continue to get better when you make more music and I have all hopes for you!! I play honey daily and I can relate to it so hard lol it’s my all time favorites!! Keep doing you tuv we will always be around to support you! I hope I can see you in concert! 🖤

It does pain me to say but I think the hate comes from your previous music (before SLM) just having "lazy" lyrics, flow, it was amateurish obviously as it was one of your first real music endeavors. All that matters is you continue to improve and genuinely put your all into it.

"This is a prime example of why you should learn music before putting it out" Putting your music out is PART of being an artist. If you don't release music early on in your career you won't get criticism or advice on how to make improvements on your sound. People like the commenters on ear candy are the reason advice and criticism is never given to starting artists, because people here it and just start insulting it because they don't like it. There's an audience for every genre and it's pretty obvious you won't like every song, but that doesn't mean you need to insult artists instead of criticizing their work and trying to help them grow. All albums have an audience whether it's ironically or genuine love and appreciation. It's pretty normal for artists to not have their best work on their first projects, but you need to give artists time to improve and try to grow their sound to be as good as it can. I'm gonna be completely honest, I don't like all your music BUT I do really appreciate the fact that you've gone through a lot to get where you are now, and that I'm not really the right audience for your work. Even if I don't enjoy your music as much as others, I wouldn't go out of my way to say "This sucks make better music" or be passively insult your old work. I am really glad to have been there when ear candy released and I am insanely excited to see where you go with your next project. Keep releasing your work, I'll always be sure to check it out and be there for when your later projects release. 💚 (Also sorry for the long comment, I just really didn't like that ear candy review LOL)

I think an overlooked problem that you had to deal with is that you already had a fanbase around a completely different media, around (at the time i think about) 1 million subs, each of which listens to completely different music and genres and artists. And hyperpop already had a bad rep with most people, so it all came together to where essentially a giant filtering process had to happen to sift through who 1. likes hyperpop 2. Doesnt immediatly write it off as “youtuber music” 3. Likes your music specifically. Something like this usually happens slowly as an artist grows so its never as big of an issue and theres not a giant hit of hate all at once. So when a crowd of so many different tastes comes together, you end up having pop and metal and hiphop fans all hearing music they wouldnt even have heard or wanted to hear, so they hate on it. Unfortunate, but its better to have it out the way and be done with it as now the crowd has been “filtered” and the people that still listen, listen because they actually love the music

I feel so bad listening to Tuv just reading his bad reviews. Everyone is so needlessly harsh, and to be honest some people are just wrong. Your new stuff is WAY better than Cherry Soda was. You've improved by a large margin. Though I have to admit, as a huge fan of both the videos and music, I agree with some of the criticisms that the harsh reviews had. Particularly with the sentiment that some of your songs are very repetitive which does kinda feels lazy sometimes. Overall you're improving with every release and I can't wait to hear what you release next!
