I've been playing this amp in the music store for a while now and real close to biting the bullet and taking her home. Never played a better combo amp in my life.
I’ve had my combo for a week now and it really is a great amp. Really great tones in this thing and the 1x12 sounds huge when turned up, not boxy. It’s not a metal amp. It’s a rock amp.
@@heavyvibrationstudiopl3256 What are you guys talking about hahaha.. tune your guitar down to b and its a killer metal amp.. just depends on the metal you are playing
i’m literally getting it for the purpose of playing metal lol. i tried one at my local music shop and it does metal far better then rock, evh had a very metal sound he’s one of the pioneers of the sound of metal.i’m talking strictly tone wise
Yeah; I really liked cranked the Gain on clean, dialing the volume knob back for “pretty cleans” then turning up for “chimey cleans”. That was a fun one
I don't understand why so many people are poo pooing this amp in the comments, it sounds awesome for a 40 watt tube amp at a price point of 900 bucks new. Great playing! And thanks for the demo!
😂 Tons of people that watch louis torrez hate this amp. That and the fact is only equipped with 2 freaking 12ax7 pre amp tubes and people talked bad shit on this amp for that. That and the fact when these were introduced the 40 wat combo was like $649 and now they are $900+ tax so $1,000 completely kills the affordable price that made this amp a no brainer. 😂
I've been looking at getting a pink taco too. Jel or JJ Junior and just tested this out at a buddy's house last night and I'm really on the fence. I've played the JJ Junior and it's super sweet and I've tested the pink taco version 1 and love it though I wasn't super happy with the sound and I'm attributing that to the crappy cabinet they had it plugged in at GC. I'm going to be going by there today and testing it out through a different cab. But I played this last night at a buddy's house with the quarter volume switch activated and it is everything I wish my 5150 3 50 watt head is not with all the things I love about that head. I don't get to use the 5150 50 watt Head that off because I just haven't wanted to run in the attenuator. I'll never sell it but my usual rig is in English Laney vC30 210 combo with a matching closed back cabinet. I run the 5150 MXR distortion through my g system chain to cut the 50 watt head out of the equation. It sounds pretty brutal but this little combo as a 112 impresses me as much as my 212 that goes with my 50 watt head and the low bedroom volume seems super sweet. Not to mention the fact there's a reverb right next to the residence and presidents and it seems there's no massive click when you change channels like in my original head. How would you say compared to the JJ Junior or pink taco?? Definitely seems more versatile than the pink taco. From what I've seen so far though, the JJ seems to have a lot of opportunity regarding usability.
I am 75 and happy enough with my 50 watt Plexi. It is my 3rd Plexi since '71 :-) But I am very impressed with the EVH. It is incredible value for money. If a guy needs more than this then what he needs is more practice not more amp. I still put in 4 hours a day. I would love to see a head. I prefer a closed back. I also like with a head moving it to the gig etc. A head is very easy to both protect it and keeping it looking like new. Thanx for the vid. love the guitar too.

At my studio, I play it into my Orange 2x12 with Vintage 30s and it's freakin' amazing! The feature set for the price is INSANE... and what really makes it special is that amazing 6L6 powered clean channel with boost and crunch tones at a foot-switch... and then... you've got that Gain Channel with the Burn Mode... and NO... you don't need to turn it to 11 to get that Brown Sound... but it's still safe to go there and beyond with the very nice sounding and adjustable Noise Gate, Presence and Resonance controls to fine tune just about any Metal Tone you want... what does this thing not do? And even then... you have onboard attenuation from 80 to 40 watt mode... again...NO... not bedroom levels, but low enough... and oh yeah... It even has a Reverb... NO... not a tank Reverb (that would be crazy talk)... but a decent sounding one, none the less. Did I leave anything out Sean? Oh... rear switchable 4-8-16 ohm outs... Dude I LOVE the 90’s Real World homage 😂 That is so cool lol. I was one of the haters of this when it came out. The EVH channel demo was eq’d So poorly but Ive played em and Ch1 Clean and OD are pretty impressive🥳🎸 Years later now Im actually considering one. Im seeing alot of people drop Celestion Creambacks in, and it rounds out those shrill highs. Great job w the Demo man! You have a Cantrell/ Slash style which Im into as well. Cheers
Thanks man. Yeah I’ve definitely heard some demos of this that didn’t sound great. But I can attest, this is a REALLY good amp for the money! I could totally see the Creambacks being a good fit.
My Marshall DSL410 JCM2000 Combo just broke and I’m looking at buying this amp. I need one amp that can do everything. As well as my metal playing and Eddie covers, could I get some bluesy SRV type tones from this amp?
The only complaint I have with this amp is the reverb. When I first bought it that spring reverb was terrible. Put a better reverb pedal on it and it sounds amazing
Will this work with other genres? Uaing thr clean channel and some drive pedals. I know this js made for that sound, but I might need the sound sometimes and sometimes some edge of breakup sound. Or should I just look for another amp.
I didn’t try this amp with any pedals so I can’t speak with much authority. But I do like the crunch tone quite a bit. But it sounds like what you really want is a good pedal platform. You can easily find a good high gain pedal, I could recommend several
i bought one to use for jamming with my band, and the amount of feedback i’m getting from the amp is insane, even when i turn away from it and move away the feedback is terrible and very annoying. any tips?
I gig with this amp practically every weekend. Some advice if you’re thinking of gigging with it. 1. This is advice for almost every amp, but dial in the mids when playing live so you can cut through the mix. 2. I use an attenuator and run the amp at 40watts. Normally I wouldn’t put the volume (on the red channel) past 2 or 3 for my stage volume. With the attenuator I can get it to maybe 5 or 6…dial in the gain and push the tubes harder, really getting what the amp was made for without blowing the doors off the place. 3. I use the amp’s emulated out to plug into our board. I think it sounds better than using a 🎙. I’ve played through some terrible emulated outs..this one sounds great imo. 4. Sell your boost and noise gate pedals. They’re built in and do the job. Great amp. Pretty heavy. Loud as hell! Buy it!!!!
hey thanks! should you buy one I would really appreciate it if you used my Sweetwater link. doesn't cost you any extra but gives me a small share to help support the channel. Use this: imp.i114863.net/WDz3QO
@@SeanPierceJohnson I need something versatile. I play anything from John Mayer, to alternative, to anything as heavy as sylosis and periphery. I’m thinking I can use a moderate gain setting on the Pink Taco, roll off the guitar’s volume knob for cleaner sections, and then have my precision drive pedal available for the truly heavy switch ups. I know the Iconic can do the heavy and chimney cleans, but does it excel on the in betweens? I prefer warm, smooth, full, less aggressive voicings.
@@sG_Chimera i quite like the "edge of breakup" cleans the Iconic does. I'd really like to try the Iconic head because i'm not a huge combo amp guy. the dirty are agressive and the precision will help make it more "modern". but if you run across one, try it out! it might surprise you
those are incredibly different amps. make sure you are doing real research for what you want - not reading what reddit or whatever says is cool... the pink taco doesnt have a "john mayer" tone in it man....... its marshally, dark and has big gain. you need a 2 channel amp, so i guess the iconic between those two....
Thats an amazing combo. The question is, can u connect this one to cabinet (ofc u can) but there is wroten 40min on 4ohm whats that mean? U can use a cabinet for only 40min or ? I didn't get it
man! i wish i could tell you where to get one! it's a Guitar Center anniversary exclusive from 2003. they were limited and i'm trying to find more of them. it's my go-to guitar
Some of that may have to do with my editing…I try to cross fade the mics out when the voice comes back in. Sitting next to the amp and twiddling the knob and playing I can say that it didn’t ruin the experience. And I never felt like the gate got in the way.
@@revsharp777 I might not be very soon because I let off a dive bomb that set off 2 car alarms on the street and the landlord is now coming up with a laundry list of complaints.
The 60 watt 2x11? Yeah, totally. These are loud amps as it is so with a mic in front it should be more than enough. And un-mic’d I’m sure it’ll be fine.
I don’t own the amp, it was at the event for all of us to play. So I don’t have it handy to make videos of. I kinda went for the Eddie settings right off the bat and thought it sounded good.
why is this spring reverb??? its digital anyways. should have been a plate emulation more akin to ed's sound. i think spring is a terrible choice with a modern voiced amp. seems like an otherwise cool line of features on the iconic and a good bang for the buck ratio. i tried the combo at GC for 10 min. has some fizz that i also heard in this video. not a dealbreaker. if ur on a budget for a 2 channel amp with cleans and modern metal this is a good choice.
Man, that gibson makes the clean sound great... Nobody gets A51 54 clean sound. I just don't get whether reverb is such a barf I own one and I was blowing away at how horrible the. Reverb is....
i grabbed one while they were around 600 bucks the only thing i've noticed is if you turn it off on the 2nd channel it does a wierd squishy noise like it's not shutting off correctly i dunno maybe i have a bad tube or whatever when shutting it offjust make sure your on the 1st channel and you'll hear that nice clicking noise it's built like a tank but the speaker cable feels a bit flimsy in 20 years this amp is gonna be a classic nice playing dude I subbed

Only ed can get his Plexj tones out of a 5150. I own the original and outside of a modern aggressive metal gig, it has way too much gain. Additionally it is not useable for even hard rock without using the clean with pedals. The high gain settings are like a fire breathing dragon. It is a challenging rig to play unless serious modern high gain is your thing. If you have hot pickups is like trying to ride your bull through Tiffany Jewelers
Since it showed up on market everybody wants to prove that this amp is good like 5150.No.It is not.And honestly this amp in my opinion has a very average sound of gain.Like there is many other amps sounding much better. Not only a bit better but much better.Would i buy it for the money it cost?Hell no way.
There are two types of musicians: real ones, who make songs and concerts; and those on the internet, who make advertisements and publicity for guitars and equipment.
I think you are more of the internet guitarrist kind. The real musicians don't waste time making ads. At most they become endorsers of a brand if they manage to be sufficiently recognized as a musicians.

What is the riff played around 10:44 ish? Personal riff or what song is it? Thanks. Great demo of a great amp.
That’s something I wrote. Haven’t yet released it. But I’m glad you dug it
Awesome demo and playing. 👍⭐️
Thanks Richard! Greatly appreciate the kind words. Don't forget to check out my website and sign up for my email list: www.seanpiercejohnson.com/email-list
Dude I LOVE the 90’s Real World homage 😂 That is so cool lol.
I was one of the haters of this when it came out. The EVH channel demo was eq’d So poorly but Ive played em and Ch1 Clean and OD are pretty impressive🥳🎸
Years later now Im actually considering one.
I bought it, this review is awesome
@@joqu6971 thanks 🙏
My Marshall DSL410 JCM2000 Combo just broke and I’m looking at buying this amp. I need one amp that can do everything. As well as my metal playing and Eddie covers, could I get some bluesy SRV type tones from this amp?
Just bought the 15 watt version will the 4 way evh pedal work on this? Thanks great video!!!
I don't know. I've only played this one with the 2 button footswtich
It’s nice to know that you don’t have to spend thousands to get a great tone! Pulled the trigger today. Love it
Nice! hope it serves you well
Thats a sick amp for the price. Ive been searching for a practice amp so Im leaning towards the 1x12.
SO SICK! The value is crazy.
The only complaint I have with this amp is the reverb. When I first bought it that spring reverb was terrible. Put a better reverb pedal on it and it sounds amazing
I have no clue why they chose spring. Woulda been way better as a plate style
James Brown is a smokin guitar player.
Buy the extended warranty with it. Great sound, but I've seen my guitarist have to switch it out twice due to technical defects within the amp.
Nice video, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it Chris!
nice tone
Thanks
I am back to tubes, line6 has lost me for life, thank u for this review
i bought one to use for jamming with my band, and the amount of feedback i’m getting from the amp is insane, even when i turn away from it and move away the feedback is terrible and very annoying.
Buy it!!!!
Does it come with foot pedal to put boost on for leads? If not hang on to ur boost lol
@@SaintsCheat Yes and they work great..I had one with the head I had and it rocked when you pushed that Boost button on the included footswitch.
How do you hook up the attenuator??
Sounds great!
Does anyone made a video using Stratocaster guitar while using this EVH 5150 40W??
awesome man. love this amp.
Me too! thanks for watching. hope you'll come back for more
I’m sold, good vid. 🤙
hey thanks! should you buy one I would really appreciate it if you used my Sweetwater link. doesn't cost you any extra but gives me a small share to help support the channel. Use this: imp.i114863.net/WDz3QO
Would it be well for metal?
pair it up with an 808 tube screamer and yes I think so.
Itll make thrash right out of the box. Ive never bothered to plug a TS to it. Phenomenal for a 1x12 combo.
Look up ola englunds review he plays metal
Interesting review. I'd really like to hear the clean channel in-depth.
Hoping I can borrow one again and do something a little more detailed and less off-the-cuff
Great review! Your speaking voice sounds a little like Alex Lifeson. Are you Canadian, eh?
Thanks. And no…I’m come from a different CA. One a lot warmer.
Trying to decide between this and the Friedman Pink Taco
that is a tough choice. the Pink Taco is far more "Marshally" than the 5150. so that might be how you decide
I didn't get it
It’s need a minimum 4ohm speaker load to operate effectively. There’s no time limit on usage.
Swap the EVH crap speaker for a greenback and tune your guitar and you’re on your way! Good chops!
Your getting great tones out of it 👍
can you turn the green channel to overdrive with the footswitch ?
I believe so. I didn’t have the foot switch for the video though
Hi. Where can I get one of those les Paul’s please, which Les Paul is it 😉💚👽
man! i wish i could tell you where to get one! it's a Guitar Center anniversary exclusive from 2003. they were limited and i'm trying to find more of them. it's my go-to guitar
The model is a Les Paul Studio if that helps!
@@aiden4884 yes. Shoulda mentioned that. However, more recent Les Paul studios don’t feel the same as this one.
@@aiden4884 cheers bro 😉💚👽
YESSSSSSSSSSS
The built in gate seemed to cut off notes to much would have to play it myself didn't really make me think wow I want this amp.
Some of that may have to do with my editing…I try to cross fade the mics out when the voice comes back in.
Sitting next to the amp and twiddling the knob and playing I can say that it didn’t ruin the experience. And I never felt like the gate got in the way.
what mics are being used?
Does it have a headphones option? I live in a room
We all live in rooms. 😄
@@revsharp777 I might not be very soon because I let off a dive bomb that set off 2 car alarms on the street and the landlord is now coming up with a laundry list of complaints.
I just bought the big version of this amp, do you think it’s big enough loud enough to play a small show
The 60 watt 2x11? Yeah, totally. These are loud amps as it is so with a mic in front it should be more than enough. And un-mic’d I’m sure it’ll be fine.
@@SeanPierceJohnson okay good to know, I’m loving it so far… trying to dial in just the right tone for heavy rock
Can anyone tell me if the boost on the foot switch will raise volume? For solos? Or is it just to add dirt.
Thanks.
It’s supposed to boost level but I find it did add a little more hair as well. Nothing crazy but a small amount.
So it does actually boost volume? I’m looking for something with an actual boost in volume. My freakin drummer!!!
Oh and thank you so much.
Late in the day for me, but can you get show us lead and rythmn distortion without mid scoop?
I don’t own the amp, it was at the event for all of us to play. So I don’t have it handy to make videos of.
I kinda went for the Eddie settings right off the bat and thought it sounded good.
Is there a tube option on these iconic amps 😐
Like, changing what comes in it? Or an EL34 version?
@@SeanPierceJohnson RL34 or ???
So loud. Woke up the whole house even after turning this down.
I'm stealing all your riffs
copyrighted and rights protected sooooo... ;)
why is this spring reverb??? its digital anyways. should have been a plate emulation more akin to ed's sound. i think spring is a terrible choice with a modern voiced amp. seems like an otherwise cool line of features on the iconic and a good bang for the buck ratio. i tried the combo at GC for 10 min. has some fizz that i also heard in this video. not a dealbreaker. if ur on a budget for a 2 channel amp with cleans and modern metal this is a good choice.
Was the speaker broken in? it sounds a little weird....
it came brand new from Sweetwater's warehouse so no.
Only thing missing is the master volume???
I haven’t seen any other 5150’s with master volumes…so it’s not exactly missing
Got one used for $630. No regrets
@@masterdingus7074 great deal

@@SeanPierceJohnson My apologize!
I mistakenly confused you with someone else on another channel... who always says the most arrogant things, then he plays his guitar(s) and almost falls off of the fretboard. THAT, was why the sarcasm.
If he wasn't so cocky without anything to back it up then he would not receive such commentary. I'm not the only one who tries to feed him a bit of reality because of his arrogance. The guy is like a Kite flyer who tries to pass himself off as a cocky Fighter Pilot.
I went back after reading your reply and checked you out again and realized you were NOT the guy I thought you were. Really careless on my part.
Had you been him, he deserved every syllable of my comment. But since I saw you and posted without actually paying much attention, then left, again, my COMPLETE apologies.

@@4GuitarTrance now you have me wondering who i look like who has such a large ego...
I need a photo of the settings for rock. I just got one, and I cannot understand this control panel. Since I have played 50 years, that sucks. Please- every video just have people pleasing their ego. I need real instructions!
Sound like it's made in china
Since it showed up on market everybody wants to prove that this amp is good like 5150.No.It is not.And honestly this amp in my opinion has a very average sound of gain.Like there is many other amps sounding much better. Not only a bit better but much better.Would i buy it for the money it cost?Hell no way.
There are two types of musicians: real ones, who make songs and concerts; and those on the internet, who make advertisements and publicity for guitars and equipment.
Oh man! I do ALL THOSE THINGS! Am I real?! Am I fake?! What is my life?!? Does anyone else exist?!? Are we in the matrix??? Is there a God?????
@@SeanPierceJohnson you are not real, you are an IA creating videos
I think you are more of the internet guitarrist kind. The real musicians don't waste time making ads. At most they become endorsers of a brand if they manage to be sufficiently recognized as a musicians.
I've been searching your channel, I wanted to listen to your music, but I only found ads
