Bach’s horizon was not fettered by a want of travel. He was able to understand enough of the world through his learning. By collecting and reading musical scores. He must have possessed an extraordinary sense of integrity and purpose to produce all he did without the normal attachments of parents or praise. Much of this probably owes also to a genuine faith. True genius doesn’t often conform to anything we would expect.

Yes, Simon Callow is a well-known English actor. He was in the film '4 Weddings and a Funeral' (I think it was his funeral). But the accent is a product of some very horrible elocution lessons, I fear, as nobody really talks like that. He seems to be struggling with reading the autocue, which doesn't help. Probably too vain to wear reading glasses!

This documentary contained factual errors as well as crappy modern renditions of Bach's music. Further it omitted all kinds of interesting facts that could have added a lot of colour. BTW, note to musicians featured in this doc near the end: don't mess with Bach's basslines... you are not the superior composer.

Bach is most definitely not the father of classical music. His works were largely forgotten after his death. He was not an innovative composer to any degree, instead perfecting the old forms of the suite, the cantata and counterpoint. It was left to his sons, and to Joseph Haydn, Beethoven, Wagner and Debussy to chart the course of music over the past 250 years.
