I'm Irish, watch as much of Simon's stuff as possible. There's something about irish events and conflict specifically that Simon seems to cover with respect and dignity. He done the Easter Rising ,War of Independence and Civil War on warographics. I'm still awaiting his take on the troubles. This is a very good piece on a very difficult event in Dublin's history. Keep up the good work sir.

I think most nations and even local areas have a moment in each generation that transforms the public focus for many decades and sometimes centuries. I wasn’t 10 years old when this happened. I remember it. The news reports were saying it was “whatever popular term for domestic terrorism, was back then”.
I’m from the USA and I thought it was over around 15 minutes, because that’s how it would have ended in my country. I’m so happy that progress is being made toward justice.

My grandmother was at the Stardust, unknowingly pregnant with my mam. She luckily escaped when those outside broke down a door that her and others were trapped behind, suffering 3rd degree burns and staying in hospital for a few weeks,. Her and my grandfather lost many friends and fought for justice all those years along with everyone else from Northside Dublin who suffered the effects of the complete negligence by those in charge. Her life went on but 48 others tragically lost theirs along with those who suffered the mental effects of what they witnessed, most teenagers. Her opinion has always been that if this happened to people not from a working-class background, Northsiders, that justice would not have had to been fought for and that the incident would never have happened in the first place. Unfortunately, the tragedy is a snapshot of Ireland at the time, complete lack of care by those controlling the country. Those who fought for justice should be celebrated as heroes, never forgetting what was lost that night.

Hey Simon, you should consider making an episode about the 2013 Kiss Nightclub fire in Brazil, over 240 deaths and over 600 injured. They were traped inside the club on fire having to break the concrete walls to save their lives. It's one of the worst fires in nightclubs in the world and still a very sore topic around here, it's been very hard for the families to get justice and even point out a culprit. One night you go out to have fun with your friends and never comes back, the families tales are heartbreaking.

Music has always been the “go-to” for escapism in Ireland (like most people) so it was cruel and awful that these young people just wanting a night away from life should meet such an end. RIP.

It also reminds me of the fire that broke out in the nightclub República Cromañón in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in December 2004, killing 194 people and leaving almost 1,500 injured. The band playing there that night, Callejeros, advertised it as "the traffic flare party," encouraging people to bring flares to the concert. One ignited a shade cloth that was (illegally) covering the ceiling and the club went up in flames. The worst part was that some of the deaths were small children, since there was a sort of "daycare" being run from the women's bathroom.

Always know where your fire exits are located whenever in a hotel, club or even restaurant. Even this is no guarantee though if someone has chained and locked those exits.
Can we have the Station Nightclub and Kings Cross fires next, in both cases it was strange to know that even when some people saw fire and smoke they still didn't think to leave to safety.

This is an excellent and timely video. It shows that you can fight for 43 years, and still win.
Because ordinary people with no power, stood up to a state which often blocked them and prevented them getting justice.
The reason that the attorney general announced a new inquiry in 2019, is because the families went all over the country, and got 48,000 postcards signed.
I remember going to several protests, and other events to get people to sign these cards.
Up until the 25th anniversary of the stardust fire, I knew very little about the campaign.
However when I heard that Eamon Butterly, was going to open a pub on the site, I decided to help.
The strength and resilience by the parents, brother and sisters aunts and uncles, of those who died, is truly inspiring.
It has been my privilege, to stand with these people. To shake, the hands of people who are actually heroes, and ran in to save their friends, is humbling and moving beyond words.
One of the people who ran back in, at the age of 17, said "I knew that the fire could not burn me as much, as losing my friends will."

The Station Nightclub Fire is a horrific one from the early 2000s in the USA. It was recorded on video camera from the moment it started and through the cameramen exiting and the death of 100 people from either the fire, smoke inhalation, or being crushed at the exit of the building.
It's on UA-cam. It's a pretty horrific video but it shows ways to improve fire safety and what went wrong.

There’s a massive list of nightclub/discotheque fires on Wikipedia. The cocoanut grove as far back as the 1940’s, the Bluebird hotel, the Whiskey-a-go-go, the Beverly Hills supper club , the Happyland dance club, the Station, the Kiss club…. People who are out for a night of fun almost never check to see if their venue is actually safe (it shouldn’t HAVE to be something people do, but after reading all of those you can’t help but go somewhere and think “How safely and quickly can I get out of here if there was a fire?”. And then when you’re in the dark and several drinks in, that easy staircase out or finding the exit door that you thought was right there turns into a complete nightmare. And club owners always seem to be more complicit than most in endangering their patrons by locking doors and windows shut and not marking the exits.

@@SoundShinobiYuki as an event manager and daughter of a fire captain, I've cancelled gigs on the night for dodgey venues/practices from the staff, like chaining the doors shut after the punters were in, shit like that. Sadly I'm in the minority, and get a fuck ton of grief for it. But I remember how bad the Kiss Club was, and how it destroyed so many people I care about, I couldn't have that shit on my conscience.

@@piratemousie And as someone who works in the entertainment industry along with my husband and spends her weekends in convention centres, clubs, halls, theatres, etc., I’m damn glad to see there’s *someone* out there who stands for safety. I’ve been lucky so far (one evacuation when the smoke alarms tripped due to a fog machine, one small fire that got put out before the fire department even got there) and I’ve left venues that I felt were genuinely unsafe, but it only needs to happen once to change your life forever.

As a Brit living in Dublin for over 20 years (not far from Artane as it happens) I know I have had time to learn the pronunciations but Simon you must be the most British man alive lol! Moanahan was a particularly good one!
On the Irish police incase you do more on Ireland:
Gardai is Gardee as in Ardee collective noun.
Garda or Guard (same as English pronouncation) singular.
AGS is pronounced An Garda She-o-corner (or near enough) but "The Gardai" is fine. The full title translates to The Guardians of the Peace.

More or less the equivalent of people saying "Worr~cess~ter~shire" for Worcestershire, "Gluecosster" for Gloucester, "Eedin~burg" for Edinburgh... or "Saint John" for the person's name St.John (pron. 'Sinjonn/Sinjinn') etc...

Caller from Dublin: Simon, I'm a big fan, so please take this in good faith. You managed to get every single Irish word and name wrong (without exception). Of course Irish people are going to tune into this one and I assume it it monetised. It would not be difficult at all to have a transliteration on the script. Had the subject been lighter and less close to home I would have laughed this off - but Artane is not that far from me and I have friends who lost friends in the Stardust. Thanks.

I grew up in Artane. As did my dad before me. He was meant to go to the Star Dust that night but got a sinking feeling he couldn't understand. He told his friend who said he'd actually had the same feeling so they stayed home. Meanwhile my wife's parents who were from Beaumont (the next area over) were also planning on going. Her dad was in the queue to get in when his brother called to him from his car asking him to mind his niece and nephew for him. He left the queue to mind the kids. My now mother in law was turned away for having too much to drink and went home to sober up. I'm a father myself now and it's crazy to think how different things could be if our parents had gotten in that night. Maybe I wouldn't be here, maybe my wife wouldn't but if even one of them had gotten in that night and the worst had happened my son certainly wouldn't be. I only point it out because we were the lucky ones. The victims were all young people with their whole lives ahead of them. They should have gotten to have the same life experiences of kids and grandchildren (if they wanted them) that the members of my family got to have. Their futures were taken away from them and their families were left devastated. RIP 48
