I’m a golf teaching pro for the last 28 years, and a cue enthusiast for over 60 years. I didn’t expect to learn anything new, but was curious about a teacher’s methodology. Yours was an excellent, well informed, and precise delivery of know how. Nice work, thanks!

I'm still working on my draw shot in practice sessions and once in a while I get it. Seems to work better if I don't try too hard and just relax. I'm an average player and play 2 to 4 hrs per day at the senior centers am a good shotmaker, but need a killer draw shot too. Thank you for the inspiration on your videos, I will keep on trying. Keep them coming, I love pool.

I scoop the cue ball because I unintentionally lift the butt just before contact. The mechanics of your right hand are mesmerizing. You're giving the cue a quick underhanded toss, but there's a lot going on. Your thumb goes from pointing at the floor to pointing at the pocket, so there is wrist action. It's a thing of beauty. Watching your level 10 shot again I see that you also twist your wrist in the follow through, like Earl. I think it provides clearance for your forearm to get out of the way of the butt of the cue, extending the follow through. I remember years ago on AZ Billiards someone posted a few clips of a nine year old Filipino kid drawing the ball like that and I thought OMG, he's following through clear to his elbow.

I am headed to the pool hall today. I always try to watch one of your videos before I go when possible. After I finish playing with my buddy I always work on these drills. And if I see an opportunity to try one during the game I give it a shot since we are not gambling. It gives me an opportunity to see if I can preform the shot, and how it affects the game. I would do the drills before, but he is there waiting as soon as they open. Thanks again!

Yet another top notch instructional video here. It takes a lot of practice to master the draw shots as was mentioned in the video already. I bring it up again because in the early days of drawing the cue ball there is going to a LOT of miscuing going on which I think was also mentioned. If you don't own your own table it's best to try to get an out of the way table wherever you shoot and then shoot towards a spot that will not disturb other players as you continually miscue and send the cue ball off the shooting surface.
Some players never master the draw shot. For years I occasionally played pool with a gentleman who frequented the same bar I did. He had at least 15 years of experience and played almost everyday. No idea how to draw the cue ball. A couple of times I saw him miscue and draw it about an inch or so. Amazingly he still played at a decent level. Intermediate I would say but not high intermediate level.
One day he said something insulting to me which was not like him. I regretfully hit him back verbally mentioning the only times he ever drew a cue ball is when his miscued. Sadly I never saw him again after that. Back in those days my drawing ability was incredibly good. I had a nickname which I won't mention in that bar related how well I drew the cue ball. It was complimentary however. This fact probably didn't help that situation any. Anyway, he would have been about a third better than he was if he could have drawn the cue ball at a fairly decent level. Cheers, John Noe

Ahhh, I think I finally get it!
At 27:01, if you drew a line from your cue, it would actually *not* go through the CB or the 6. And this is what is meant by "compensating" for english(?). I've been trying to figure out why my english doesn't seem to be moving the CB as much. I tried aiming askew instead of a straight line through the CB, and now CB is moving much more in the direction I want. Almost easier to make it go too far when I hit it like this.

Another informative vid. Helps codify how to organize thinking about draw shots. I can do a lot of them, but not consistently. Biggest problem i have is object ball rattling out. I iften feel like I’ve got an ok game but it’s just out of focus (sometimes literally,: right-handed, very left eye dominant). Other times i play like Andrew “Dunce”Clay😜 Butthere are some drills and shot practice ideas in the vid that will be useful.

I know how to draw the ball very little. Sometimes I get it to zip back a lot, but more times it may only come back a few balls. And never straight back. Which means I'm not hitting the cue ball square or probably the object ball. I'm an APA lvl 4. When I have someone tell me to hit a draw shot from even the slightest angle, whether offthe rail or in the middle of the table, I know it isn't going to end well. I watch your videos all the time and they are all great! I just wish I knew which stuff to start with because I feel like I'm trying more advanced stuff than I'm capable of. I mean I try it while practicing or practice games, but not very often in matches. Thanks again for all your drills and videos you share!

    • @FXBilliards
      @FXBilliards  5 місяців тому +1

Most likely the reason you’re not getting consistent results is because your stroke is not consistent. Sometimes you’re hitting the ball higher than others. Sometimes you shoot to the right then to the left. Keep your cue level and focus on a straight stroke. Which takes thousands of shots, and you’ll have better success. As far as the learning process, I would recommend checking out our NWQPOOL.com MasterClass. It covers a lot of the basics and takes you up to advanced in a logical order.

a DIME shaped curvature tip is the number one stick I'm looking for in a bar.. If it's warped.. Always strike with the "warp" up. Just like my red dot meucci. The stroke will always be true. FX U ROCK

After 7 months of almost daily practice on a variety of shots at beginner level on a small table, I am now starting to get consistent draw. Some shots even reaching back long rail. Switched from a crummy starter cue to a 48 inch Viper with LePro leather tip and better, although still cheap, Sure Shot chalk from Great Escape. This all after watching and rewatching your and others' videos. Thanks, Bryan!

Refer you to any soft tip on any tip maker if wanting to improve on your draw. Currently a 9/7 APA/650'S BCA and I honestly prefer a Kumui super soft but everyone has their different preferences and levels of play so it depends on what English you prefer the most on what fits the best. Experience wise soft tips take away from long distance shots as medium tips gets you distance but lacks in the draw your looking for. Hard tips#NOCOMMENT

I’ve been getting so much from your excellent instruction. Just totally changes, or rather adds to and changes my way of playing. But I had a weird revelation, and I’m not sure if I’m right but your videos on draw, follow, English all got me thinking. Am I right in thinking that if one hits the cue ball dead center (I know, it’s not as easy as it seems) medium hard stroke, that you are actually simply pushing the ball for x amount of distance before it’s forward motion translates to the ball rolling? If so, how far with a medium hard shot? Your instruction made me think more about just the slightest amount of follow, there would me much less “push” and the ball would be actually rolling very shortly after the cue hits it. Maybe this is super obvious, or maybe I’m wrong but it just occurred to me and makes me think if it is true it could explain things I noticed in my years of amateur pool playing.
I’m so glad I found your instruction videos. I went backwards, from your latest and then on to earlier ones. You were always great at instruction and giving info, but as I went back through time I noticed to how much more natural you became with your presentation. Was great before, but you definitely have honed it and have developed a style that just is fun but also so interesting and you make your points so well! Thanks!

Bryan I don't know if your reading my mind or if you have a camera in my house. Last night a light bulb got a little brighter for me in regards to my draw shot.
Everytime I walk by the pool table I try to hit a few balls different shots. Just because I'm walking past the table.
Anyway just as I was about to try a draw shot I realized my bridge hand was way to loose. I had the cue resting between my thumb and forefinger and I had the butt of the cue slightly elevated.
I didnt raise up and start over which I should have. I changed my bridge hand by putting my forefinger around the cue and leveling the butt. Needless to say for me it was a perfect long distance draw shot. I immediately thought of you because my changes were because of you. Thank you Bryan...

I also tend to use a closed bridge when I'm looking for maximum draw, but it's certainly not required. In fact, I'm thinking it's because there is a flaw in the stroke that by using a closed bridge makes it easier. Take a look at elite snooker players. They can draw the ball a *LONG* way with lots of distance between the cue and object ball, and they pretty much always use open bridges.

Wow, I'm embarressed to say, I have been playing pool since I was 10 and really never knew any rules. I didnt know how to really use diamonds. The shots I learnened best were rail shots and severe cut shots but not sure exactly how I made them. Lol. The reason being I could never bank or make long shots well. I've been a 4 in 8 and 9 ball APA for 6 or 7 years. I can beat 5's and 6's ..not sure why either. I think I concentrate on making the ball and shoot SLOW. 9/10 x I can draw the ball, since I dont know where the hell the cue goes after shot, draw is my best bet. You are an excellent teacher!!!!! Now that I'm watching your videos I feel like I may actually go up to a 5 or 6 someday!. Thank you

Nice video. I struggle with a couple of things. One is I need to be in stroke, it’s hard to go up to the table cold and get all the mechanics right for a good draw. The other - accidental English throwing the shot, I need to focus very hard on where I am hitting the cue ball, while maintaining object ball aim. I’ve got better as my stroke has improved, draws seem harder shots for taller guys like me, than shorter players who naturally can stay down flatter. My wife, who is short and Filipino, can barely play the game, I showed her draw shot and she nailed it first time no effort at all.

I don’t know about the height thing I’m 6 foot 2 and the man who might have the strongest DrawShot in the history of the game is Mike Massy who about 6 foot 6 But it is easier for short people to stay down on the shot.

I’m always hearing courage and being afraid when someone gives me their opinion. I live in Tokyo and I don’t speak fluently and they are not fluent in English. I think they are referring to confidence in the control of the difficult shots I take and the cue ball position afterwards. I think they think I can’t position the cue ball, but that’s only 10% accurate if that much. If someone told you to not be afraid to play well or have courage. What would you think. I set a goal to win a major and it will put me in the S class player bracket here in Japan.

I may have a few tips. Remember that it’s two round objects in contact, your tip vs the ball, so when elevating, your 2D perspective of the face of the cue ball shifts upward, like a jump shot. Your “level” cue path will have to travel straight along that upward shifted perspective. The follow through will be cuing into the table. Hope this helps

I am an intermediate player. Played pool my whole life but never really tried because my family was so competitive and excellent pool players.
I have been playing Pool seriously for the last six months maybe.
I play excellent Pool on my practice plays but when I am playing others, most of the time, I choke.
I’ve been challenging myself to play the good players and get out of my own head. Out of my own way.
My biggest challenge in my opinion has been consistency.
    Speed, stroke, aiming…..
I have to force myself to watch where the ball goes, if I hit it where I aimed, etc
My skill is inconsistent as well I’m better at long shots than short, I could make every side shot for one week but the next week can’t seem to wrap my mind around it and sink a ball.
Do you suggest on drills that I continue to start on the shorter shots? Or should I start on what I can do easily and work backwards towards three more difficult shorter shots?
Thanks for your time! I enjoy your videos

As for your shot, making of short shots - take the shots you can make, and slowly make them more and more difficult - slowly is the key-pretty much what you just described.

The shaft should not be an issue. I have the same draw shot with a $500 shaft as I do with a $50 house cue. The only real difference for me is the deflection on shots like level 7-10. Those shots are far more difficult with a lesser quality shaft.

You could very well embrace it. There are many world-class players, who drop their elbow. People who think that’s a stroke flaw. I don’t know what they’re talking about. It’s only a flaw if it causes your cue to rise during the shot. And if your grip hand is light and fluid, this won’t happen.

I keep trying to hit low and follow thru. Am I possibly lifting my elbow or something and not realizing it?

You maybe be dipping your shoulder or changing your stroke as you add power to the shot. As you try to draw further and further back, with greater power, you may be dropping the tip of the cue. Make sure the tip is in good condition and you have good quality chalk as well. If you want to send me a video of you hitting a dozen or so, I will take a look. Thank you Brian for input and advice. The tip I’m using is the black clear “soft” Kamui tip and using Kamui chalk 1.21
The tip does need replacing soon though. Have you ever used the extra soft? Was wondering if it grips the cue more and was thinking of ordering the soft and the extra soft just to see the difference.
My stick is a 19 oz. custom made Joss. It’s really quite beautiful made with 4 different woods. That being said , would it be better to weigh it up to a 21 oz stick? Thinking of adding the extra weight to maybe help with the drawing back effect and easier to hit. I’ve had many people tell me the lighter stick is better but I honestly like the feel of a heavier stick. Seemed I had better control with it heavier and knew just how softly to hit the cue with a 21 oz. The lighter stick just doesn’t have the feel that I was use to. The table I just got is the 8X4 , with Simonis 860 and trying to get use to it as well.
But back to the draw shots, I’ll keep it in mind what you said and see if I can’t get some shots recorded maybe this weekend.

I apply a tip then cut 2/3 off and apply another and do the same until I get about three applied. I am noticing a controlled softer stroke on the object ball. I am over eighty years old so I have been around the block a few times. I have my own table and have had a total of seven tables in my lifetime. IT COULD BE: You are hitting the CB lower than you think. If you jump the ball you are hitting under the ball. The problem is most likely in your stroke. You are trying too hard and the stroke is not straight. Try hitting it very slow and very low until your stroke improves to the point that you are hitting the correct spot.
