    Seems to me that putting a cotton ankle sock on the shoe tree before inserting it into the shoe would take moisture out of the leather quickly.
    Update:
    Got my own set of cedar shoe trees, and it seems that putting an ankle sock on them might make them a little bit too big and possibly stretch my shoes a little bit, so I’m not going to use ankle socks on my trees.

    • @HoundsBay

      Leaving them in for longer than 24 hours should not hurt your shoes, so long as they fit properly (not bulging out on the sides of the shoe). Like Harrison Wedgeworth said the longer they are in, the more they help keep the shape of the shoe. Plus the cedar will help keep insects away!

  • @松田もしくろす
    @松田もしくろす 6 років тому

    No bunion stretchers? Some shoe trees have holes drilled where you can insert a small plastic knob to stretch the leather out just a little bit more in an area where you tend to get some rubbing of the little toe or perhaps the first knuckle of the big toe. Obviously getting well fitted is important but feet do change over time.

    • @Punk-Jw
      @Punk-Jw 6 років тому

      松田もしくろす this isn't a stretcher. There's a difference. Did you watch the whole video? These are placed in your shoe/boot while it isn't being worn to hold shape and disperse water moisture from sweat or humidity (which dries it out). A Stretcher is used to get the desired fit and then is no longer used on that shoe/boot unless your foot changes (bunions, in grown toe nail). If you have to stretch a pair of boots or shoes quite a bit especially if you have an abnormal walk or foot shape, this will help keep it in that shape and looking it's best.

    • @ianturnbow7011
      @ianturnbow7011 5 років тому

      I just cut my toes and parts of my foot off when issues as such arise. How can your foot have a bunion if it is cut off and disposed of? Not my bunion, not my problem.

    • @HoundsBay
      @HoundsBay  6 років тому +1

      Glad I'm not the only one who finds it tiring to shine by hand! Unfortunately I have no experience with the machine ones. I've seen some in the local cobblers/shoe repair places. If you have a trusted shoe repair/cobbler, I would ask them, and they may even let you take one for a test run. My guess would be that it wouldn't be as effective as doing it by hand, but it may cut down on the time if you were to start with the machine and then finish by hand.
      Let me know if you're able to find one and what the results are. I'm definitely curious too!

    How long does a shoe tree last?

    • @ianturnbow7011
      @ianturnbow7011 5 років тому

      When the shoe tree becomes saturated with sweat after extensive usage it is recommended to lightly sand down the shoe tree. Basically, lightly sanding an old shoe trees brings in new life for it. Theoretically, the shoe tree can last decades if someone isn't abusing the piss out of it.

    Your experiment is a nice idea but is badly done and worthless, or worse: misleading. If you want to take a photo showing the real-world effect of the shoe tree in the left shoe, TAKE THE TREE OUT FIRST, put the shoes on, walk for 10 minutes, and THEN take a photo. The only thing one can see on your current photos is that the wrinkles smooth out when the shoe tree is stretching them from below.

      Thank you Adam Hosman, I was about to say something similar, or that they did a really bad marketing job, but you said it better. Still, I think I better get a few more pairs to protect my investment, just in case.

    So...I collect vintage harness boots, they are ALL square toe, somthing like this would be nice for the 2 or 3 I wear very often but also nice for while they are sitting so they dont collapse. I have the ones I hardly wear or only special occasions stuffed with stiff paper but obviously it isnt going to correct the form. I havent found anything to fit a square toe tall shaft boot.....What do you recommend? 95% of the boots I own are Frye or Tex or Acme, however I do have a couple of vintage shoe company harness boots, just to give you an idea of what they look like.

    • @HoundsBay
      @HoundsBay  6 років тому +1

      Hi Jeremy,
      Some companies like Red Wing make some boot trees that may work for what you're looking for. I have not used them myself, but they have a higher heel portion to help keep the shaft of the boot straight. They're a little more expensive than your typical trees. The other alternative would be going with adjustable shoe trees, probably sizing up to make sure you get enough pressure, and then using boot shapers, paper, or I've heard cutting up pool noodles are a good way to keep the shafts straight. I'm not sure how tall the boots are, but that would be my recommendation. The shoe trees wouldn't probably fit all the way into the toe, but should get enough pressure before the toe, where the boot bends where you walk, to work alright.
      Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Question - I want to buy the right size, but I've got a Size 44, which is a US 10.5, but it's about a quarter size too small. After a couple of days breaking them in, they are better, but I'd like to put a shoe tree in it and they are all sold as EU sizes. Should I go for a 43/44 or use a 45/46 and allow the shoe trees to expand them out?
    Shoes were from shoepassion and are of very high quality.
    I'm living overseas and it's a major pain in the ass to send things back and forth from Europe right now and I have already worn the shoes outdoors now to break them in.
    They don't need much extra room, they are only slightly tight for around the first 30-40 minutes wearing them. However, at the end of wearing them for a full 10-12 hrs and doing a lot of walking, they definitely feel a bit snug.

    • @HoundsBay
      @HoundsBay  6 років тому

      They both work really well, but the split toe opens when pushed in, so it "adjusts" to the correct width. If you buy the vented toe, they fill the toe area a little more, but you need to make sure you get the right fit since they don't self-adjust. I love both versions, but the model I personally use is the split toe. I hope this helps! -Rich
