The Mornington Peninsula hosts a lithology similar to Ballarat and Bendigo. It is the only place in Melbourne where you will find the Castlemaine group outcropping. This lead to three gold rushes since its initial discovery in 1851. Today these gold rushes have largely been forgotten about, so this video will bring it back to the forefront and explain how and why gold exists in this region of Melbourne.

I really like seeing about some of the lesser known and smaller historical goldfields! A cheeky video, OzGeology.
A cheeky video indeed! Thanks for watching :D
Thanks OzGeology for highlighting this forgotten history, the geology of the Mornington Peninsula is very interesting and unique. Lots of interesting minerals down here, on the ancient basaltic lava flows around Bass Strait and Westernport bay.
dude i grew up at Birdrock Beach in Mount Martha.... accoding to that map- my parents house may literally have treasure under it. im starting a super secret tunnel. dont tell anyone okay??
I did too in the 70s and 80s golden times🙂
I did too in the 70s and 80s golden times🙂
Trust me I’ll keep it a secret! Go visit and plant some veggies
My father found gold in Mt Martha but said the lead was minimal! Lucky to get an oz! The geology is on a fault line!
Don't have to you just did
Did a bit of panning in Tubbarubba creek back in 1967.got a very small speck of gold and some small sapphires ad rubies.Still got them in a jar somewhere.
There was a shaft dug at Langwarrin roughly on the westerport hwy between frankston Cranbourne rd and sky rd. It yielded gold but was abandoned due to constant flooding. We found some traces on our property at langwarrin south where a clay pocket meets a sand one.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing. Flooding is definitely the main hindrance if you don’t have a strong enough pump that’s for sure.
Hay Man its great to have an Aussie telling us about our beautiful country ( even tho he comes from Victoria) proud of you a man 100%
Can you let us know if you're working on another long video? We love those
Geebuz dude... I grew up in Bonbeach, and help my dad drill bore water pipes in the mid seventies. It was 90% thick oily black clay with shells. Once we got under that level (iwas 8, don't quote me, 27ft?) The water was pretty good. Smelled a little but clear. Not like it does on the SE Queensland coast.
The black clay was like ultra thick grease. Oozed with pressure. To get down to the required depth...would be almost impossible unless it was monster scale. Still...
Any idea of bedrock depths around these areas?
Love your work 😊
Thanks for doing a piece on Mornington Peninsula. I did years ago try to get down some of the renowned creeks. Unfortunately most likely areas are on private property. The council down here is so bizarre that the likelihood of digging a hole on your own property of even a small depth would violate probably most of their bylaws lol. The geology changes greatly in even a small area. Lots of hot rocks too.
I lived in Merricks and the largest nugget found that I know of was found on the Elgee Park property, I believe it was a 10 oz nugget. I have detected the area but all I found was an old file. You can still see the diggings in some places.
Very cool! It’d be worth a pan to see if any small gold still exists. It adds up quickly :)
@@OzGeologyOfficial The old creek where it was found still runs thru the property, and the owners are approachable. Write them a letter and ask for permission you may be surprised. The old timers also sank a shaft or two which have now been filled. Let me know if you end up getting permission. You may have more luck with a pan than we did with our detectors.
Imagine my astonishment when we found we had an old goldmine on our property! Very small, and usually full of water, but nonetheless a legit goldmine. Wild!
Very cool! I wish I had access to it. I'm sure I'd find some sparkly gold somewhere there haha!
@@OzGeologyOfficial Feel free to drop over any time.
Good video
do you know if i could still legally find sapphires here? the area seems to be completely on private land
Larger sapphires were down point leo, and no, you can't legally prospect for them there anymore.
Forgotten gold fields of the Mornington peninsula. Not to be confused with the forgotten mine fields of the Mornington peninsula ⛏💥
My mates parents property is on Bulldog creek in Merricks North and I think there is an old Chinese diggers camp on it.
That is awesome! I’d love to see that and prospect the area hahaha
@@OzGeologyOfficial on Tubbarubba Rd near the intersection with Balnarring Rd there is a heritage site with something to do with Chinese gold mining as well. That’s a few properties up from my mate’s parents place. It’s not well signposted
My brother has a farm in Kalimna West in Gippsland.
What’s the geological history of the area?
I love Goooooooolllĺlllddðddddd. Unfortunately, i had a smelting accident
Gold member now? :D
The Mornington Peninsular has a history of shallow gold diggers... You don't say? 😂
