I think the scene at 44:14 (the first Curly cake dream) comes after the scene at 50:56 . Because in the dream, the screen is already broken from when Swansea broke it with the axe. Now Jimmy has the axe. And very shortly after, Jimmy descends into his... judgement and re-enacts his dreams.

He enabled Jimmy to get away with anything, quite literally giving him the job as co-pilot, allowing Jimmy to scream and throw a tantrum during HIS OWN BIRTHDAY, he didn’t do anything for Anya to protect herself, and ultimately he didn’t expect Jimmy to do anything bad, hence why the ship was crashed

@@randomdude3773Curly could have thrown Jim into a Cryopod and turned the ship back. They had all been fired anyway and it would have taken less time to go back than to wait to reach their delivery destination in 8 months.
Hell at the end of the game, Jimmy manages to tie Swansea to a chair all on his own before executing him. Curly could have told the rest of the crew and they could have easily subdued and tied Jimmy up if he got violent.
Curly could have used the nylon rope and crowbar in the cockpit to keep Jimmy confined to his own room by locking it from the outside. He could have thrown in a bunch of soup cans and nutrition packets with him and kept him locked in there for the rest of the trip.
To say Curly did everything he could shows a lack of creativity and imagination cus there are *several* things he absolutely could have done.

If you want a less serious example, take the cake scene: as a captain, there is 0 reason Curly should have allowed Jimmy to insult his crew like that. And then to start cutting the cake too...have some balls man. I personally don't fault him for it (because of his mental state and my own strong empathy), but I understand why others might.

hays been made about the tulpar having no brig, and seemingly not having a lot of lockable rooms at all, but tbqh the bare minimum curly had to do was recognize that jimmy was in fact a man capable of a great deal of violence after anya told him what happened and keep a fucking eye on him. not to leave him alone after hes said some shit like 'oh yeah what if the ship crashed lol wouldnt that be funny' after you know he has a) committed a literal crime and b) is going to lose his job after the ship lands and therefore has nothing to lose. obviously hoping or assuming your friend is not the sort of person who would rather murder 4 people and kill himself than go to jail is a human reaction but. he was walking past warning signs right up until it blew up in front of his face.

    • @sanabanana83

Jimmy never thought about Anya. Not even at the end during Judgement. Anya was represented by Polle and a womb.
Also, about Anya not giving Curly his meds. Anya says it makes her nauseous. Anya is pregnant. I think she was experiencing morning sickness, which despite the name doesn't happen just during the morning, and can be triggered or worsened by situations of stress.
I got a lot to say about Anya. How she is symbolized in the game, always isolated. From Jimmy's perspective, Anya is objectified and dehumanized. The way she was reading the Tulpar's safety manual and studying psychiatry books (from dev's Q&A). The way Jimmy constantly mistreats Anya. The way she talks about Jimmy before the crash, with fear. The way she speaks to Jimmy after the crash, stroking his ego, perhaps a subconscious way of protecting herself. And the action she takes after Jimmy blows up at her at the end of scene 50:56.
She tries really hard and doesn't get anywhere, but in the face of her failures she doesn't give up... until she does.

Glad to see someone's already put this together. I think it's interesting seeing Curly's psychological state prior to the crash. A lot of people blame him for not cracking Jimmy's head open the moment he learned about Anya, but I think him freezing up is extremely realistic. People like to act like they'd be heroes and do things differently but the reality is that if you were in Curly's shoes, you wouldn't have "manned up, gone right up to Jimmy, knocked him out, and shoved him in a cryopod." You probably would have hesitated like he did.
Between Jimmy's active manipulation of Curly from the very beginning, Anya's diagnosis being that Curly *is* unstable, and the hallucinations we see from him, it's obvious that he was paranoid, incredibly insecure about his position, and depressed to the point of suicidal idealization. The first moment we get a third person perspective of pre-crash Curly is literally a moment of derealization. Curly gives into Jimmy's words because he knows that Jimmy's right to a degree: Jimmy having raped Anya would fall on him, too, even if it was completely out of his control to prevent. By the time he even realized what Jimmy said and that he intended to follow through with it, it was already too late.
It also should be noted that from the very start, Jimmy is also cultivating the thoughts of self-doubt into Curly's mind. He tells him at the end of the psych eval that he "always seems like he's standing on a bridge with his feet in cement." This is someone implied to be his best friend whom he's known for years, possibly a decade or longer. If you harbored these kinds of feelings about yourself over being an upper class and successful person, and your best friend, the "straight man who tells it to you how it REALLY is for all the common folk," pushes those kinds of feelings to the forefront of your mind constantly with little reminders about "how much better you have it than everyone else," that kind of internalized inadequacy and self-doubt is going to be amplified.
I think it's very realistic that Curly froze up. This is a man who was already depressed, who in the past week learned that he would be losing not only his own job, but the jobs of 4 other people that he felt responsible for, learned that his best friend of many years assaulted another friend and coworker - one who, might I add, is implied at times to be a romantic interest of his - and blames himself for not preventing it from happening, not to mention the fact that he's going to face the consequences as captain of the tulpar for not preventing it despite it being something that was completely out of his control. Even if they had made it to their destination, at the very least 3 of the 5 members of the tulpar crew would have had the trajectories of their lives changed forever.
With all of those things in mind, I really think it's not surprising at all that Curly had no idea what to do. I don't know if he really intended to do what he said to Jimmy and that they were going to "push through things" or if he was just desperately trying to find the right thing to say about a situation he could never have considered. To me, personally, I think in all likelihood, Curly was a genuinely good person who was faced with an impossible situation, which is what makes the writing of this game all the more ingenious.
...Now with all of that said, why on God's Green Earth would a manned long haul freighter with a mixed gender crew not be fully equipped with contraceptives and mifepristone and levonorgestrel pills? Even if one could argue that assault wouldn't be a foreseeable scenario, you're in space, alone with these people for up to over a year at a time. I really struggled to differentiate Curley and Jimmy when I first watched through the game. Originally, because of the confusion, I didn’t think there was a “villain” and it was all unfortunate circumstance with nobody at direct fault. Rewatching with hindsight, it’s a completely different experience. The most horrifying thing about this game is that people like Jimmy exist. Unchecked egos, way in over their heads and delusional to how much pressure someone they envy is under. Curley earned respect while Jimmy demanded it, nobody trusted him and nobody felt safe. They were instantly divided. I don’t know if they would’ve survived had Curley still been captain, but they would’ve died a team. Instead of taking the fall together they acted out of fear and uncertainty because Jimmy was afraid of being a failure more than taking care of everyone else.

That’s hindsight. Foresight is when you see it before it happens.
Also tbh, both are villains, in a sense. Hear me out. Curley is the kind one, yes, but whoo boy… the things he lets his friend (Jimmy) get away with. He sweeps so much under the rug just to keep the peace without actually solving anything. He avoids the “why don’t the bedchambers have locks when the medic and cockpit do?” question by just saying “safety” as if that makes sense (if it was for safety they would all have locks, or they all wouldn’t). And sure he tries to comfort Anya but only to then confront Jimmy in such a half-assed way, then Curley completely ignores him afterwards, leading to the crash.
Jimmy was the direct villain but Curley was the indirect one. He was the “Well I’m a good man because I don’t do that” guy who still hung out with and enabled men who _do._

@@DeathnoteBB I see your point, but there's no way of knowing how much was him sweeping jimmy's actions under the rug and him doing damage control. He did put in a good word to get jimmy the job, he did avoid very valid questions and he did confront jimmy very half-assedly. But you can also see how those were just human mistakes, him trying to get a job for his friend, him being just one more slave to the company (he has access to everything but he's not the one who make the rules, he still gets points deducted when something goes wrong), and he was the one to do jimmy's psychological evaluation, if anyone knew him well, it was curly.
Thats why he wanted to be part of the conversation when anya talked to jimmy, thats why he was worried for her and immediately went after him. They still had approximately 8 months abroad and the whole crew was still recovering from the news they were all gonna be fired, he reacted the way he thought would keep jimmy in check until they got there, because he knew both jimmy and himself would have to take responsability, jimmy for the abuse and him for allowing everything to happen under his watch, he never denied it. And i do believe that was the most prudent route for him to go for, if jimmy went ahead and tried to kill everyone even after curly being kind to him, imagine his reaction to a proper scolding, he couldve done something worse to anya for telling curly before going after the rest of the crew, he couldve gone for vengeance first intead of immediately trying to avoid his future.

I wanted to watch this specifically to see the events leading up the crash. What sticks out to me is how Jimmy *immediately* resorts to wanting to kill the whole crew with the asteroid to bury his assault, and Curly just says NOTHING about it other than "Right..." It makes it seem like Curly is either agreeing with Jimmy that this situation, if played out, would look bad for Curly. Or that what Jimmy said was so out of pocket that Curly truly didn't know how to respond, and could only stand there dumbfounded as Jimmy walks away and says he'll take care of it. The implications that scene gives of their friendship dynamic is wild.
Jimmy is arrogant in how he keeps saying Curly is supposed to be entirely responsible for the people on board the ship (coughcough mainly just himself cough) but in this instance, Curly truly *was* supposed to be responsible for NOT letting Jimmy crash the ship, because he very literally told him he would do it.

    • @youraftermyrobotbee
      @youraftermyrobotbee 3 місяці тому +288

@@capybaraenthusiast5164 You know, I think I may have cracked that scene. It comes off like Curly holding the idiot ball until you realize-- or remember, as the game has been consistently hinting throughout-- that Curly _did,_ in his very private heart of hearts, consider doing something that drastic himself. In his conversations with both Anya and Jimmy about the mental health assessment, all parties kind of dance around about Curly's mental health degrading, him getting into his own head about what he's even still doing with Pony Express. The game treats this as a red herring once it becomes clear Jimmy is the malignant party-- _but those implications are still there._ Curly is not healthy or happy even before the crash.
That brings us to Curly's relationship with Jimmy. (Bleuch. I know.) Jimmy, I think, is the kind of guy you become buddies with because he "keeps it real." He's "brutally honest." He humbles you. I have had this sort of friend (if you were ever on Tumblr in its heyday, you probably had this sort of friend too)-- a friend who comes from disprivilege, whose discontent and toxicity, even toward you, is justified and justifiable as punching up. Curly seems to come from much better material circumstances than the rest of his crew-- and he's used his relative privilege to try to help Jimmy into a better place in life. Still the dynamic between the two of them, that Jimmy reiterates at every turn, is that Jimmy's the perpetual underdog, that Curly has no right to push back on him. In their conversation around the cake, Curly doesn't really do much but take Jimmy's verbal walloping. Because Jimmy's _right._ Curly really is out of touch with what it's like to live on the lower rungs of the ladder. Jimmy can say all the hateful, out-of-pocket shit he likes because he is _right._
And so just prior to the crash, Jimmy is completely transparent about his intentions, and Curly says nothing-- out of _shame._ Because it _seems_ as if, for the millionth time, _Jimmy has read him like an open book._ I don't think Curly really would have tried to crash the ship-- but silently, in desperation, in his inmost heart, he thought about it. So Jimmy turns his admission into an accusation (look at that gesture, the hand on the arm, of consolation, of sympathy, of "I get it, brother"), and Curly can do nothing but stand there accused.
And Curly only realizes what Jimmy _really_ meant when it's too late.
(It's also why it's so easy for Jimmy to pin the blame on Curly to the rest of the crew after the fact.)

When he gets called out I think he believes jimmy understands him the pat on the shoulder, the I’ll take care of it, we only know ab the crash because of hindsight, but curly seems to be a person who chooses heart over logic, and I think in his heart he really believes his friend won’t do anything that drastic. It’s interesting to see a persons overcaring or trusting nature be a flaw because he truly believed in jimmy. And it cost him. People play curly off as the secondary villain when curly is just a nice guy who got caught in the one situation he truly wasn’t prepared to handle, having to severely reprimand his best friend for a crim he didn’t even think once he could commit, and not telling his crew they would be fired when they were done the delivery.

I want you to imagine if it was your best best friend or your family. Sure, maybe (hopefully) you would probably condemn them later on when you realize the truth, but would you really be able to accept it at the moment? Is it that easy to flick a switch and accept that you've been friends/family with a monster and stop loving them right then and there? idk i usually see two interpretations of curly's actions. it's either he's an enabler that let jimmy do whatever he wanted or he's a guy that is faced with a dogpile of major issues to deal with in a span of a week. i feel like the second interpretation is more believable tbh. i feel that anya would be more resentful towards post crash curly if he was being a complete enabler for jimmy, but no, she feels sympathetic and hurt to hear him in pain. anya has shown many times that she is capable of expressing herself dominantly and confidently, and the only reason she doesn't do it around jimmy is out of survival.
so yeah... i dont really think curly is an enabler, but a very very realistic depiction of a mentally unwell man that had a shit ton of horrible stuff revealed and done to him in a short time.

I thought the same thing. Also even if Curly scolds Jimmy, or forcefully imprison him in a cryopod, Jimmy would get mad, fight back, and crash the ship all the same. No matter what Curly did, Jimmy won't do the right thing. I don't think Jimmy is actually a good friend to Curly, seeing how he keeps being sarcastic and manipulating him. Curly probably knows him for a long time and tries to help him but Jimmy thinks Curly thinks of him as a charity case.

1:25:10 There are no fucking words to describe how much I adore this scene.
Music that fits perfectly into the rhythm of the speech, sounding a bit like the mind of a dying person or a drunk person, a splice of fragments of life, sometimes good - with family and children but also the bad ones, on the street, lightly breathing characters. And most importantly - the text. I don't know who wrote this dialogue (or rather monologue) but that person is a genius. First of all: It is not written like poetry, because it does not capture the heart, it does not touch the emotions, but it's so fucking well written that it hits you like a stone. It's so good that I know it by heart. "Old dogs laughing amd snarling on a waterbed floor mocking the moon for daring to show its face'' holy damn, this text was reflected in my head so often, while, for example, riding a bus. The italicized parts "you" and "sobriety" hurts. When I understood what was going on at the end (the part about Daisuke) I honestly cried.Swansea was too tough to say it in front of him, but too sensitive and good not to use those words before his death. And secondly - the meaning of the whole statement. And the feeling of emptiness when you understand that Swansea died believing he was better off as an alcoholic and that he felt guilty for Daisuki's death, even though Jimmy-Jumbo killed him. What disgusts me the most is Jimmy's words "I'll fix everything". Bro seriously thought he was going to do something lol (not funny). It's a good thing Swansea made the most powerful move of the entire game - colliding J. with his own reflection, because that's exactly what he is - a bird that kills itself by hitting itself with its own reflection in the glass. "Fuck you" we all say in usion.
Swansea is definitely the most underrated character, and so is this scene.

To be fully candid and honest with you, you have my sympathies that this was your first experience. The non-linear design of the game is a *very* major part of its storytelling. (SPOILERS FOR HOW THE GAME IS DESIGNED AHEAD)
You start without knowing what's happening, only that you're crashing the ship, then you're made to believe it was Curly and that he was a piece of human waste. Then you learn Curly was depressed and thought that's why he did it. Then you learn that they were all being laid off and that Jimmy was egging Curly on and putting pressure on him because of that, which becomes the NEW reason why you think Curly did it. After that, there's the reveal about Anya's assault, which just adds more and more pressure onto Curly. Genuinely, I had *zero* idea that the person who crashed the ship was actually Jimmy and not Curly until the scene where it explicitly shows Jimmy doing it, the use of non-linear time skipping was so effective in pulling the rug under the player constantly that you don't put it all together until after the fact.

    • @blueyandicy
      @blueyandicy  3 місяці тому +10

@@wolfcl0ck While I fully agree with you, I definitely think that mystery is ruined if you're unable to understand the story at all because of the Tarantino-Styled timeline, so if they think they wouldn't have understood the plot normally, this might have been better for them. tysm for putting this together! This is kind of all over the place but I wanted to throw in my two cents about Curly' and also Curly's dynamic with Anya. Many people say that Curly intentionally turned a blind eye to her assault. While Curly did ultimately fail to protect Anya, which is one of his biggest flaws, I disagree with that take. He didn't fail her out of malice because in almost every scene through Curly's perspective, special attention is made to his dynamic with Anya. She is comfortable around him, often playing along with banter, making comments about Pony Express being cheap and lazy, and generally showing much more personality than she shows when we're seeing Jimmy's POV.
There's a scene from the demo that I'm really sad was cut, its an extended version of Curly's psych eval where Curly expresses Anya gave him sleep medication that isn't working, and they have more friendly banter. This scene puts Curly's poor mental state as well as Anya's actual personality into context.
Curly lacking sleep, feeling unfulfilled in his life, being manipulated by his best friend, and then finding out him and his crew are all losing their jobs must have been an actual nightmare. He was suffering way before the ship crashed as SO MUCH was weighing him down, not to mention the constant threats of pay docking/group punishment detailed in the "Polle says" posters. There was so much on the line at all times because they were at the mercy of a corrupt company that cuts corners and does next to nothing to protect its employees. Something awful was bound to happen on one of those freighter trips at some point or another.
So when Anya reveals to him that his *best friend,* someone he's done several year long freighter hauls with, someone he had grown to trust, committed such a vile act, he freezes and starts to actually crash out. When he is made aware that Anya told Jimmy about the pregnancy he immediately says "Did he seem angry?" and "Hold on, fuck. I need to find him" indicating he's afraid of what Jimmy is going to do. He also constantly says "I'll fix it" and says "Everything is gonna be okay" and I truly believe he meant that, and wanted to help her.
The soundtrack in that scene right before Jimmy crashes the ship and Curly tries to deescalate the situation is extremely tense and stressful, with the constant banging noises and suspenseful ambiance. This, to me, reinforces 1) that Curly truly WANTED to protect Anya, to take action and do something, but he is in such an awful situation where there really isn't much he can do. (He should have taken immediate action, potentially allowing Anya to stay in medical so she can have a locked door or smth but it makes sense why in this situation he froze) and 2) that he's kind of scared of what Jimmy is capable of!
Lots of people say he should've beat Jimmy's ass, shoved him in a cryopod or even tossed him into space. But they all kind of needed him around, because he is the copilot and not to mention any drastic action taken against Jimmy would get ALL of them punished and take away from their pay, which is the driving reason why any of them are even on that ship so that solution isn't plausible.
Curly's biggest flaw is that he empathizes with his lunatic friend and sees the best in EVERYONE. He's too chill of a boss. He should've never let Daisuke on board, they didn't have enough food or cryopods with him there. He doesn't force Jimmy to take the psych eval seriously. He doesn't report Swansea for Daisuke getting stuck in the foam or for his general sour attitude (no shade towards Swansea). He doesn't report Anya for stealing the gun case. He breaks direct orders by telling them about Pony Express going under. All of this is him sticking his neck out for his crew but also being a people pleaser who can't seem to put his foot down when it's needed. He allows for problems to snowball instead of addressing them head on. While Anya's assault is undeniably a part of that, it's not Curly's driving mistake that is the reason for the "TAKE RESPONSIBILITY" subliminal, it's a culmination of ALL of Curly's mistakes.
So no, he didn't intentionally "turn a blind eye" to Anya's SA, nor did he plan to "sweep it under the rug" (at least that's how I interpreted it) because when Curly tells Jimmy that they can "fix it together" I believe it's half damage control and deescalation and half him meaning that Jimmy will have to take the steps to atone for his actions and make things right somehow and not that "it's no big deal, it'll all blow over"

A lot of people seem to portray Jimmy as this psychopath with no remorse and -- I mean, yeah, he's awful. But I think it's a disservice to his character to assume that's all he is. Jimmy is narcissistic, it wounds him to admit he messed up in any way. But as the ship deteriorates, as his crewmates perish... he ends up doing just that. Although blinded by his egocentrism and need to be a hero, he makes an effort. That's probably one of the most tragic parts of this game: we get a purely narcissistic psychopath so fed up, so stressed, so done with everything... he bothers to try having some basic human empathy. We tend to consider him as the villain, when in truth it's easier to understand the ship, the corporation as this dehumanizing thing eating away at you. It undermines everything you stand for. The leader loses everything he cares about, the veteran gives up on helping the newbies get where they are, and the narcissistic idiot learns some basic human decency. Nobody is the winner here, nobody gets to call themselves superior or strong. It's just a bunch of very diverse people pushed so far they betray each and every single one of their core values. They twist and turn, until they're nothing.
Decay has very obviously always been a huge focus for Mouthwashing's narrative, and seeing a narcissist fall from grace, a loser try to play the game like everyone else... that's the real tragedy. Not even a monster can survive Pony Express.

I might agree with some of what you said, if it wasn't for the fact that all the way through to the end Jimmy never takes responsability for what he has done, and just keeps running away from it like the slimy, narcissistic coward that he is.
Even his final act of putting Curly in the cryo pod and offing himself is in reality one final act of selfishness and delusion. He relinquishes the position of captain back to Curly (notice he deliberately calls Curly captain) as a way to place all responsability and blame onto him, and then he takes the coward's way out while fooling himself that he's "a hero", while in reality he's just the same slimy snake he's always been the whole time.
Also Jimmy never shows any signs of regretting or feeling any remorse for what he did to Anya. Hell, it's strongly implied that he either is super misogynistic, or doesn't view her as a human being at all.
I don't care how much the company eats away at someone, how does that justify s*xually assaulting a coworker, and then continuing to verbally abuse her and mistreat her to the point where she takes her own life?
Daisuke, Swansea, and even the unborn fetus get hallucination sequences. But not Anya.
The only reason why the fetus gets a hallucination sequence is because it's literal evidence of his crime.
Honestly, fuck Jimmy. He's an absolute garbage human being. Regardless of if he's a psychopath or not. Hell, if he isn't, then that's even worse, because it means he DOES know better, yet he chooses to be an absolute sack of trash.

It is subtle but it still bugs me so many videos fail to mention it, or straight-up think they have a romantic relationship and Jimmy’s just “scared to be a dad” 🤦 It’s similar to how this sort of thing in real life is also missed. It’s a scary reminder people just see what they want to and ignore the red flags until it’s too late

There's one thing I just don't quite understand:
So it's implied that Jimmy forced himself onto Anya, and it seems like Anya told Curly about it, back when it first happened because when Anya tells Curly that she's pregnant and Curly tries to play dumb on who the man is, she immediately cuts him off with an "I told you.", and Curly drops the act. So what I don't get is why Curly, back when she FIRST told him about the assault, didn't actually do anything about it? Jimmy doesn't seem to have received any punishment, and the other crew members don't even know about the incident (until post-crash when Anya tells Swansea in private).
I guess my question is why is Curly acting so normal towards both Anya and Jimmy pre-crash? Curly only acknowledges everything when Anya reveals that she's pregnant. It makes it seem like Curly is covering up the incident for his friend, which would be a fucking evil deranged thing to do and I'm not sure that was the developer's intention since Curly is portrayed as being a genuinely good man in-game.

    • @D4wM4rk
      @D4wM4rk 3 місяці тому +342

my best guess is that curly was afraid of the reaction of jimmy if he knew what he did. Jimmy and the rest of the crew were already in not the best of moods after he revealed they they were all gonna get fired after the mission, so maybe curly was holding onto the information that anya told him until after they reach the destination in order to keep the peace. Also, it's more than likely that jimmy crashed the ship when he learned that anya got pregnant, since that meant that there was undeniable proof that he SAd her. It's also implied that Jimmy has a criminal record, so if it came out to the public that he assaulted Anya, not only would he go to prison again, but he would have zero chance of finding another job in the future.

Curly is a good man, yet he gives the benefit of the doubt towards the wrong people (jimmy), and doesnt take serious action against him, he just tells him to keep it together, that they 3 of them will fix the situation together, jimmy however, manipulates him into thinking it was CURLY`s fault because he was the captain and that if he trusted him, he would "fix everything" (crash the whole ship lmao) due to curly not taking action against jimmy, he was left completely disabled, unable to do anything but watch, did he deserve it? hell nah lmao, was he innocent? sadly, no

    • @tereladea
      @tereladea 3 місяці тому +121

My personal read of Anya and Curly's cockpit conversation is that it jumps in time before she says "I told you.", since it feels like there's some conversation missing there. He only really seems to learn about Anya's assault during the 2 days before interaction, and tries to calm down Jimmy during the 1 day before interaction. Whatever way you interpret the conversation between them, the point of Curly is that his inaction to handle Jimmy is what leads to the crash happening. He doesn't stop Jimmy from blowing up at him, from belittling the others, and doesn't handle the assault of Anya well.
I think you can take Curly's characters a few ways - despite his flaws, he's very close to the crew. Anya puts a tremendous amount of effort into keeping him alive, and clearly sees him as a friend before and after the crash. He failed Anya in how he handled Jimmy, but we also don't get to see what would've happened if Curly had more time to deal with the situation.

1:23:42 I remember when I first got to this section, I thought it was a representation of Swansea and Jimmy actually fighting, with Swansea chasing Jimmy around the ship, and it taking 3 shots to take him down. Thought it was pretty cool how it was telling the story. Then it goes back to the present and Swansea's already tied up in a chair and it's one clean shot through the head that kills him.
I mean, I guess Jimmy got him in the chair with the gun itself, but it feels kind of stupid to think Swansea wouldn't have fought back? It's one of the only parts of Mouthwashing I really wish they took a different direction with. I mean, it gave us a really good monologue from Swansea, but that could've happened earlier and been a sort of flashback scene to before everything else that transpired to get to this point and as a sendoff. Then when the monologue is over, cut back to 'reality' where Jimmy's staring at Swansea's dead body he just put 3 holes in.
Would've been cool to think Swansea actually made more of an effort.

I think it makes sense that Swansea goes down easily. You gotta realize the gigantic strength gap between the two at this point. Jimmy is a young (or at least, younger than Swansea) man who seems to be in at least decent physical condition, and the game implies that he never drinks the mouthwash, or at least, doesn't to the extent of Daisuke and Swansea. Meanwhile, Swansea is a much older, very out of shape man who has been essentially drinking tons of low-grade poison for several months and who just woke up from being roofied. It makes sense that Jimmy would very easily be able to overpower Swansea.

Having now watched this in chronological order and replayed the dialogue over and over, the SA that Anya experienced would have been when she was unconscious in her room. Jimmy when discussing the cocktail for Swansea implies that he has an idea of how much can knock someone out. Because Anya is not in a romantic/sexual relationship with anyone on the ship, she only recently discovers she is pregnant herself and concludes Jimmy did something to her. She either has an idea or knows by the time her and Curly are discussing the dead pixel on the nighttime screen. Confirms to Curly the next day that she is pregnant, and then eventually tells Jimmy on the day of the crash.

Jimmy is such a well written character. From the beginning, not of the game but of the time they set off on the tuplar, the whole crew was doomed. Jimmy being amongst them set in stone their fates.
Jimmy doesn't want to be a Captain. He wants control. He wants control of his life to feel like he has purpose. He wants control of people's perceptions of him because he wants to be respected and have Curly's reputation. He wants control of consequences an impossible feat. Hence why he runs from all of his mistakes. He can control his brain not to see it. Ex. Anya's body when we first get back into medical. He ran away to space because of his "struggle of a life" back on earth. He crashed a ship because he r***d Anya. (I honestly think he was going to shoot her if she didn't hide the gun case). He made everyone believe that Curly crashed the ship so that they'd listen to him as a self appointed captain. He killed Swansea because out of everyone on the ship Swansea saw Jimmy for who he really was. And Jimmy didn't want to confront that reality. Then he lets the idealized version of Curly tale responsibility for his "mistake".
Before he takes one last attempt to take control of his situation of his life. He's controlling the narrative. And in the end he even gets to control how and when it ends. You are only allowed to witness it.

One of the lesser known ways you can tell Jimmy doomed everyone on purpose is by his conversation with Daisuke at the beginning of the game. This is such a cool project, and helps me understand the game much more than I did before
Since watching this I've seen more playthroughs and now I'm wondering if the scene at 8:20 in chapter 4 actually happens during the crash?
It's just a wild theory but my reasoning is this:
    1) Apparently, once the bright light begins on screen in the red pit, you the player cannot look away from that light - even if you try to
    2) That gimmick - a light you can't look away from - returns in the vent scene later on, and is clearly a metaphor for facing responsibility
    3) In the pit scene as curly with the light, you also see emergency warning lights and ladders - a realization about Jimmy, maybe?
I think that scene is Curly's version of Jimmy's vent scene: Responsibility, like a large bright flame, scorching the horizion as the ship flies full speed into an asteroid because of all the things Curly didn't take responsibility for.
I wish I could say that if I'm right Curly learned his lesson, but I'm not sure. Either
    1) The warning lights and the sky (referring to that one dead pixel) and the weird crying noises are about Jimmy being a full monster and Curly actually, genuinely gets it
    Or
    2) Once again, there's all this direct symbolism about blood and ladders and light and the responsibility of the crash, and then jack shit about Anya.
    Man, this game

1:22:58 I have seen the idea that these sections didn't actually happen. That he saw Swansea kill Daisuke and went to get the gun. He imagined he was attacked in the cockpit while retrieving the code (or he already was in medical and was afraid that if he when to cockpit he would have been attacked, but he had had gotten the code some time before that). Then he imagined himself attacked in the medical. Then he went to lounge and saw Swansea just sitting on a chair. Listened to him and shot him. Because:
1:23:27 Here he is tied up with hands behind. But at 1:25:13 he is sitting with hands in front of him. The screen also looks a little bit like the screen in the lounge. He might have been sitting in the same chair as at the "b-day party" 1:27:21 and Jimbo didn't move him at all.
Jim is a coward. He would have just shot Swansea instead of tying him up if Swansea really run to him with an axe in medical.
Jim likes to think better of himself. Convincing himself that he'd be killed so he needs to kill first is in character.
Utility is far from the lounge. Would Jim be really that eager to carry a full grown man who was repeatedly described as "fat"? Would he even be able considering they were probably rationing food and undereating.
1:27:06 Utility is clean of foam, when in reality the walls are heavily covered. The tied up Swansea is most likely the part of the guilt trip. Maybe to explain to himself that if Swansea was more reasonable, Jim would have just tied him up and let him leave. But woe is him.
1:41:27 When Jim carries Curly to the cryo pod, the utility is again foamed up, but the floor seems clean of blood when here 1:27:06 it was quite noticeably covered. But I haven't played the game so I don't know if there is blood anywhere in the lounge to confirm where Swansea was killed.
But yeah it is really hard to put the last sections in any order since they are all in his mind.
Thank you for the video! I was very curious about the achievements!
