    • (WATCH BEFORE BUYING A...
We took six of the Huntin' Fool Advisors, and paired them with 6 of the more popular hunting packs on the market. Each pack was loaded with 50lbs of salt, set on the backs of every advisor and carried over rough terrain. In this video they go over what they like about each pack, and what could use some improvement. We couldn't cover everything in this video, so if you're interested in one of the packs go checkout our individual pack breakdown video, where we go over individual features and functions.
    SIDE NOTE:
We were not paid to do this review.
A lot of folks want to see Kifaru in the mix! We're sorry we missed it on this video, if we do another one we'll be sure to reach out to them. We would have loved to do every pack on the market but at the end of the day, we're very busy here at HF and only had six guys available to spend an entire day to help you make a more educated choice on your next pack.
Our main goal was to give you a pack review that was a bit more than a guy telling you about a pack with the tag still on it.

Great pack comparison video, it is not common to get that many packs on the same video. It would have been nice to see you add a Kifaru pack as part of the comparison. I own or have owned three of the packs discussed in the video (not all the exact same model but similar to what you showed), I would agree with the assessment made. It would be interesting to increase the weight up 20 lbs. and see if the same observations were made. I have found a big difference in comfort with just 20 lbs. increase. Also, it was mentioned the Mystery ranch “was heavier than most” yet in the video, it was the lightest pack of all six. Was that talking about them in general or specifically that pack. Will you be putting notes from the comparison video anywhere? If so it would be nice to know what is the pack everyone uses on a regular basis because of the little biases that come from your own pack of choice. I plan to follow more videos in the future and will be sharing you video to my friends. Thanks for a good video!!

Thanks! We went with the Mystery ranch Sawtooth just because it would hold the bag of salt better than the Beartooth (Same Frame). As we mentioned, for the size, they are generally heavier packs. Sawtooth is only 2746cu vs say the kuiu which is 6000. The review was focused mainly on frame comfort, fit, and function so we figured it wouldn't be a huge deal. As for our personal packs, that's changing every year! We didn't want to put out info that would be irrelevant in the future. Glad you enjoyed the video!

@@huntinfool_official Thanks for the reply, size can change the weight a bit. Have you considered going with more weight? I know trying to do videos takes a lot of time and effort, especially one that takes a full day like this one probably did. Again thanks for the video and good luck with the future videos.

@@Cowboyshooterify I tried! but the Advisors kept complaining, so we went with 50lbs ha! We ended up hiking over 4 miles that day so it was a big ask to get them all to carry much more, however you're right having more weight changes everything! In future vids I'd like to do a short heavy haul test as well.

Great reviews for all the packs. I own an Exo Mountain 4800 and love it. Lumbar pads come in a few different sizes and thicknesses. Shoulder straps can be adjusted up and down the pack to fit anyone. I've packed out half an elk with it a few times now and it amazes me on how hardly any weight is on shoulders and almost all the weight is transferred to the hips. Steve did an awesome job when he came out with these packs.

Being a guide we rely on comfort, it is a bit heavy but the versatility and quality of the pack dar outweighs the con of the weight issue with these skinny guys. I’m 5’11 and 265lbs.

Archery day pack....Outside load: decoys (2), easily and quickly accessible. Bow with quiver attached, secure and reasonably accessible. (with the bow I prefer secure over quick access). 1 collapsing walking stick which must be capable of being attached tightly without protruding at all! (Mostly for stability when carrying out heavy meat loads) Inside load: water bladder (2 Qts min) this is probably the single heaviest item inside when full of H2O. Mini hatchet, two skinning and deboning knives, sharpener, 30 LF parachute cord, lighter, toilet paper, some band aids, aspirin, lunch/snacks, lens cleaner (an absolute must for expensive glass), other misc gear. All under 20 lbs w/o bow weight. All day comfort!

Thanks for sharing everyone's thoughts on each one of these packs. Being from the East coast (well West "by God" Virginia and an extremely tight budget I don't have the chance to really try and experiment with multiple packs. Most of these brands are direct to consumer, so one cannot walk into a box store and try them on. Of course how they feel empty in a store or even your house doesn't tell the whole story. So it's nice to have a review like this with multiple people. Even if no one was above a 36 in waist. I am in that 38-40 inch waist at 6'0.5" 250 lbs.
Watching this just shows that there are multiple high quality packs and it's all up to personal taste in layout and finding the right fit. Thankfully most manufacturers have a return policy after so many days.

Mis-information about the Kuiu pack at the 9:00 mark being the only one with individual adjusting shoulder straps on the frame panel. The Exo Spyder frame does the same thing and is one of the reasons it will be more comfortable with heavy loads than the rest. Its fully customizable to the guy. No different than getting fitted for a suit, you should get a pack that will work for you when set up properly. These aren't shoes where you put them on and go. Good review but a lot left out. Overall ratings, pricing, kifaru, features, accessory options etc. It could be an hour long and people who want the info would watch it.

nice try, but pointless without a kifaru. they've got the belt in the industry imo. packs are like boots you don;t know until you try them on yourself with 80-90 lbs plus. try to find someone local and try one on through facebook hunting groups or online forums. or order multiple packs online, load them up heavy around the house and return the one that doesnt fit.
i have had an eberlestock, kuiu, exo, stone glacier and kifaru. kept the stone glacier x curve as it fits my back the best and the load sling keeps the load higher so that's what i still use. i could really tell when i got 80, 90+ lbs plus loaded up that it was the pack for me. kifaru was close,, love the belt but felt more bulky and not as streamlined as the SG. had exo, kuiu and eberlestock over the course of a couple years and all sucked once loaded up heavy. getting the right pack is all worth it on those deep packouts.

I purchased an Eberlestock Gunslinger II backpack with the integrated rifle scabbard to keep snow off my rifle while I'm hunting in the arctic by ski-doo. I'm really happy you mentioned the shoulder strap issue. I am smaller framed and even with a big heavy winter jacket it still doesn't fit me right. The length of the back frame was also way too short. I have no idea who they designed these packs for but it just doesn't fit right. A real shame because the integrated rifle scabbard is amazing.

All good packs here. I have owned or tested most of them. In my opinion Eberlestock is not a top end pack. At least not the ones I have tried. Good packs but they are not on the level of Mystery Ranch, Exo, Stone Glacier. Should have left them out and put in a Kifaru. I have been running a 44 Mag the last two years and love it. Very adjustable and super modular. I have added a belt pouch, gun bearers, water bottle holder, and run a few pullouts to stay organized. Might be adding a sherman pocket and or a guide lid this next year. Just my opinion on what works best for me. These are all great packs. It would be fun to test them like you guys did and see what works best for fit and function. Nice video.

I’ll echo some of the other comments. There should have been a Kifaru pack being reviewed in the mix. I don’t own a Kifaru, but I am in the market this year for a new pack. I don’t have to search far in forums or other avenues to know from other people that Kifaru is widely considered at least top 3 in this line up of packs. If you are naming your video “top packs of 2020”, there should have been more of an effort to include the “top packs”. I don’t know all the in’s and out’s and politics of the hunting industry because I’m just an average Joe that hunts, but there seems to be a lot cronyism and exclusion in the industry, which I understand the industry is a business that is largely about making money, but I am more skeptical of some reviews because of those reasons mentioned. That being said, I appreciate videos like this being made and put out, I just think there was a missed opportunity with some other packs that should have been reviewed as well.

There are a ton of great packs out there and since it is such a subjective subject I would imagine it would be hard to do 1 video that pleases everyone. I also don't understand how anyone can have an opinion of a pack they have never used before regardless of what others say about it.

I have been a backcountry mountain hunter for more than 15 years. After wasting money on packs for almost a decade ( incliding the packs they mention, I am a gear junkie nd buy and try new gear all the time)nothing beats Kifaru. Without a Kifaru in the mix, or testing a pack out load 85+ lbs his is just another wasted review.

I believe on the video it says “Stanton Upson” My apologies if I mispelled your name but I have a question for you! I too and almost identical to your dimensions! I’m 5’7” 195lbs with a 35” waist. On the KUIU pack, did you go with the regular size frame or the tall frame? Just because my torso is 17” so I know that’s sort of on the border of their pack measurements. Also, for their suspensions, did you go with the small/medium or with the Large/XL? Because our waist is right there at the border of their measurements too! Thanks guys for this fantastic review on these packs!

Mystery ranch for meat hauling & camp loads (Metcalf & Mule- swap out the bags) proper fitting for a woman. I can haul loads with proper form.

GOOD REVIEW. Im 5/9 155 lbs and i thought this was a good video would have liked to have seen a kifaru. I have an Exo 4800 and love it. I have spike camped 5 days w/1&2 man tent/ sleeping bag/mnt house/cooking &misc hunting gear/bow no problem. i like the ability to carry camp and meat out on initial trip.i have packed out 85 lbs not easy but not because of the pack more because i'm 64 yrs.Exo are pricey but quality and customer service are very good. i love the horsehoe zipper for access. I live in the southeast and can easily carry in water/killkit/snacks/and locon stand and 3 sticks with climbing gear. For hunting this is the best pack i have ever used but if you are only back packing stone glazier is super lightweight. so i hope this helps someone looking to purchase a new pack. Remember quality counts and if you can spend your money on any gear a good pack and good boots are 2 best things to spend it on

Agre with some comments why no Kifaru? Started in 2012 with Eberlestock Blue widow and it was horrible for any weight!! Quickly moved to Kuiu with their OLD carbon fiber frame Icon 6000 due to sale price and it worked well. Loved the organization on it, however any load above 50lbs I would get bruises on my hip bones. Waist belt needed some work. Last 3 years moved to Kifaru and have enjoyed their pack system and waist belt! Have a couple assortment of bags for the Kifaru now too.

I live in California so my biggest issue is finding what the longest gun can fit entirely into the pack from top to bottom that's not conspicuous. I'm most limited to bullpups and breakdowns. I'd love to see your overviews go over max item length that fits in packs top to bottom. It's keeping it fully hidden inconspicuous with the Karen's until I get into the field.

Hey, I'm from Germany and unfortunately I only understood half of what you said there. Which is the best frame backpack in your opinion. I am personally looking for a frame backpack with a roll closure, highly water-repellent and a size of around 60 liters. Can you help me ?

A lot of us have been very happy with the Exo pack, it's not the most water resistant, but if you run a pack cover it keeps your pack from soaking up water and adding weight.

Now, here’s what I have to be able to carry and carry comfortably, a rifle that weighs 22lbs. And the long range shooting kit that goes with it which is another 20 plus pounds and sometimes twice that. I’m 5’7”’s with a 31” waist and I weigh 155 pounds and for carrying a huge heavy rifle the mystery ranch overload military pack is awesome!! I’ve tried about every rifle carrying pack that money can buy. I did have to add waist belt cinch buckles and purchase higher load lifters but I can carry huge weight that seems to disappear once the pack is on my back, of course I can feel the weight in my legs. If one has to carry a heavy rifle this pack is perfect. The trick, once you find a pack that is comfortable, is to hike with it and get it adjusted properly. Great video!!

Question, when you load meat in the pack,
Is there something you need to consider in terms of scent and not emoting meat scent to bear or coyote?
I mean you pack the meat, take it back to camp, then do you hang the pack from a tree like you would a bear can?

    • @huntinfool_official
