That is Richie at his most honest. He is without doubt the most....forthright....powerful.... and knowledgeable cricket commentator all time The greatest to grace our screens....That includes John Arlott! and he is #2
Arlott was different. He was pure commentator. He recounted and embellished, taking it to a higher level. In that Arlott was the greatest commentator that entertained. Richie was an anchor as well. So more rounded but as a recounter of what is taking on the pitch at the time, Arlott has no equal.
I used to watch BBC cricket with Richie Benaud and Jim Laker as commentators. They knew when to talk and when to be quiet and let the action speak for itself. Now commentators feel they have to prattle on all the time and talk crap.
It's a sign of the times really with how self-centred people have become, I guess. Used to love watching snooker with Ted Lowe or Jack Karnehm, now it's almost unwatchable with any commentator you like filling up airtime with their thoughts. These channels get paid a lot, why don't they give us a commentator-free option?
@@heliumtrophyI see your point but by the same token snooker commentary is much more insightful than it was back then. Honestly Ted Lowe (God Rest His Soul) did the most unbelievably simplistic commentary😄
Grew up watching him every summer on BB1/2, parents were cricket mad, it was live coverage during the day and highlights in the evening. These guys were part of the family...
Goodness me he was angry wasn't he??!!! And relatively young at a tender 50! RIP Richie, you were a great cricketer yourself, and as wonderful a commentator as there will ever be.
I can still hear my old man abusing the TV when Chappell lost his marbles and ordered his brother to bowl underarm.A very bad stain on Australian cricket
So can I. I am sitting here watching UA-cam after Shane Warne's death and lamenting the horrendous flooding in my home town Lismore. Can still vividly remember sitting watching tele with Dad in South Lismore and detesting Greg Chappell ever since.
Man, you Kiwis have established an eternal butthurt over this... While it certainly was NOT cricket, Chappell’s move has provided a never-ending supply of bad fee-fee’s for you guys... Frankly, I love to see it anymore. Produce another Hadlee and let’s move on, bwahaha
The subtitled translation is an absolute classic - the work of genius! I still can't pick myself up off the floor I'm laughing so hard and I first saw it more than 20 minutes ago!
Love Richie. I dunno why, but he's just so comedic even when he's deadly serious. So much respect for him... yet he's such an icon that he's a parody of himself.
The man was an Australian cricketer - yet he was universally loved and respected in England. You simply can't have a better epitaph than that. And this famous diatribe is one of the reasons - he would always put the game itself before any mere partisan considerations. No-one of his stature around today, sadly - he was one of a kind.
Yep, Richie's a legend, and the best advertisement for OZ cricket since Don Bradman. His timing was that of a great actor, and he rarely stated the obvious, giving the viewer the credit for being able to see that themselves. When Richie opened his mouth it was always worth listening.
Summer to me as a kid in England meant playing cricket in the park with my friends (if the weather was kind). If I couldn't play cricket I'd watch the Test Match on BBC 1. 'Soul Limbo' and the voice of Peter West and Richie Benaud. Benaud is the absolute epitome of a fair, straight talking, witty and deeply knowledgeable commentator. Completely honest and impartial, with the kind of understatement that us Brits love. He never put a foot wrong. Michael Holding is a Caribbean version of Benaud, the same love of the game, the same forthrightness, the same integrity. Both inimitable. I miss Richie immensely.
Yeah that makes sense, i saw that happen and it was Greg Chappel who told his brother i think it was from memory to bowl a grubber, right along the pitch because they needed 6 to win. It was a pretty piss poor performance. I'm an Aussie but i still didn't want to win like that. He could've bowled something that couldn't have been hit for 6, but thats the risk you must take. Bowling under arm was low and weak
I have been watching UA-cam Videos on cricket from last 14 Years . This video was uploaded 11 years back , Yet youtube recommended this to me only today.
No Pakistani can forget Ritchie as he was commentating when the great Akram bowled Alan Lamb and Lewis on successive deliveries in WC 1992 Final. Had the honour of meeting him in Lahore on the eve of WC 1996 final
I was wondering if it was about the 'underarm' incident. I've seen the footage of the incident but I had never seen this before. I think Richie was amazingly composed considering how angry he looks, the subtitles just give it the finishing touch. Thanks for the upload and the ' translation ' of Mr Benaud.
@nathan45318 - I saw this live. I was at my grandfather's for dinner and you should have heard him go off when he saw it. He was real old school and had seen guys like Ponsford and Bradman bat and he went absolutely bananas. I'd never seen him so pissed off!
LOL- Absolutely bloody hilarious my good man. Wonderful subtitles. By Richie's restrained standards that really was white-hot ranting and raving foaming at the mouth stuff. I'll be sharing this little gem around for sure.
@psynapsurfa It was the underarm incident. I can well remember Richie Benaud signing off on that Sunday afternoon. The following day My School Principal called for an early morning assembly to share with us all, how much he was disgraced by The Underarm Ball.
What really strikes me as vexing is that Trevor had managed to take the wickets of Richard Hadlee and Ian Smith - the last two players who could bat properly - in the same over. This, combined with the fact that the no. 10 batsman wasn't likely to have belted a six, is why I blame Greg entirely for causing the incident - he ripped out Trevor's spine on live TV and killed his brother's career.
He got Hadlee from an absolute shocking decision. Then there's Snedden taking a clear catch off G Chappell earlier in the match. I can't believe how composed NZ were given they were only 6 runs away and cheated several times in the same match. NZ would have won easily without all the cheating occurring by the Australian captain and umpires. The underarm was irrelevant, but the icing on the cake. NZ had been shafted well before that. And it happened time and time again during the 80s (and in 2001/02 when umpires prevented Australia losing that series). Dyer, and Dick French. Joke.
Hadlee's dismissal wasn't a good decision, granted, but the point still remains - Greg was stupid enough to believe that the no. 10 batsman would've hoicked a six in one shot, and had no faith in his brothers bowling ability at all. Trevor had removed the last two players who could have belted the last six, and had his career murdered by Greg on live television.
the great thing about this rant is that it can be used for anytime when a team is dismal. Right now the Australian team could maybe huddle around Ponting`s pc and watch this then have someone explain it to them after. And yes, I`m an Australian. Although my aunt`s cousin`s next door neighbour`s uncle is from England so that gives me an out.
I could actually hear those subtitles in my head, being spoken by Richie Benaud. He used to commentate on cricket when I was a child, my father used to watch him and think he was a pompous twat. I thought he was brilliant! Being an 8 year old and having never heard an Australian accent, I was bewildered by him. I couldn't understand him the first few times I heard him!
Absolutely spot on. What message was Greg Chappell sending to his own brother, ordering him to bowl underarm to a tail-end batsman who he believed was going to hit him for six? Shouldn't have even had T.C. bowling the last over in the first place. What a disgrace...
Pommie and massive RB fan here, it’s funny how he barely changed between say the 1970s and when he’d passed 80 and suddenly started to look frail as the cancer did its worst😕.
Oh boy, and he was right too, really right. It was a disgraceful way to end the match. Richie Benaud, Bumble and Mark Nicholas, the three best commentators out there. There's never be another like Benaud.
Wonderful cricketer, wonderful commentator, wonderful man.
RIP Richie Benaud.
Rest In Peace Richie you were one of the greatest commentators we have ever had on our screens
That is Richie at his most honest.
He is without doubt the most....forthright....powerful.... and knowledgeable cricket commentator all time
The greatest to grace our screens....That includes John Arlott! and he is #2
Paul EJ Here here!!!!!!!!!!!
ltihema Hear Hear!!!!!
Oops my bad..
Chappelli was more forthright and incisive. His strategic and tactical nous was also superior. Benaud was sublime and hit with a velvet-clad iron-fist

William , Precisely put 👏
It wouldn't be so bad if they had thoughts
@@heliumtrophyI see your point but by the same token snooker commentary is much more insightful than it was back then. Honestly Ted Lowe (God Rest His Soul) did the most unbelievably simplistic commentary😄
Richie was an absolute class act. RIP .
Grew up watching him every summer on BB1/2, parents were cricket mad, it was live coverage during the day and highlights in the evening. These guys were part of the family...
I loved watching cricket on the bbc in the late 70s early eighties. Richie benaud was a household name.
I got into cricket because of him and at the time that was about the only thing to watch on TV during those heady school summer holidays.
Goodness me he was angry wasn't he??!!! And relatively young at a tender 50! RIP Richie, you were a great cricketer yourself, and as wonderful a commentator as there will ever be.
Yet so eloquent even when angry. Something I am incapable of.
@@madouc5754 Me either. I just lose my shit completely.
50th like for the tender aged Legend.

I still running in to bowl to a kiwi and at the last minute stop and go to bowl underarm to em. Always fires em up.
Bigtime mate i was 12 yrs old absolutely screaming you fucking cheat lol shamed all Australians that day greg chappell.hated him after that
Man, you Kiwis have established an eternal butthurt over this... While it certainly was NOT cricket, Chappell’s move has provided a never-ending supply of bad fee-fee’s for you guys... Frankly, I love to see it anymore. Produce another Hadlee and let’s move on, bwahaha
You've got to specify Greg Chappell. Because people have been wrongly blaming Chappelli (Ian) for years.
Rest in Power legend
A great man. He is gone but will never be forgotten.
A Legend of Australian Cricket, Broadcasting and an Australian Icon. Summer hasn't been the same since he left!
Finest commentator of any sport of any era in my opinion, loved him on the BBC and Channel 4
RIP. Benaud. part of my childhood just died
Stop beating around the bush, Richie. Tell us what you really think. :P
RIP Champion.
Richie Benaud forever missed irreplaceable .
We meet again!. You really are a fan afterall!
The subtitled translation is an absolute classic - the work of genius! I still can't pick myself up off the floor I'm laughing so hard and I first saw it more than 20 minutes ago!
Richie was my voice of cricket growing up. God bless him.

Very well said👌

That goodnight was stark in difference to the rest of the monologue. Ah. Rest in peace, Richie.
You wouldn't have seen the underarm delivery done under Richie Benaud's watch. He was - and is - a gentleman of the game.
Gods voice guru of commentators the great Richie benaud u were the most iconic personality on this planet

It was 6 for a draw actually. They couldn't win. That made it even worse. I watched the game in it's entirety as well.

That was the under arm ball against NZ,i remember that like yesterday....

I can't believe I actually like the subtitles XD

The subtitles are GOLD.
I kid you not. See again.

Correct.
YEP well...i couldn't agree with me more on that one...
"Good Night." That's the best bit.
still to this day I cant stand any Chappell I was 10 and new it was wrong
Your bias is outstanding. Ian distanced himself from what Greg and Trev did. Go back to God and ask for a brain.
RIP champ
Richie is a living legenD
Benaud didn't get that upset with The 12th Man for imitating him during his recordings!
As a working class Pom didn't always see eye to eye with Richie although loved his commentary.
He was bang on the nail here though.
I like it when the Australians behave despicably. It’s what creates the drama. They are the baddies
Master blaster of commentatory
how the fk did you come up wid those dialogues man. hilarious. one of most comical yet to the point cover ups!
I love the CRICKET with BALLS
Richie had trauma over Max Walker's stunt when he hijacked the commentary box 📦 😂😂😂
RIP Richie
He is of course talking about the Chappell brothers infamous underarm delivery against New Zealand.
